Instrumentation of a high-sensitivity microwave vector detection system for low-temperature applications
We present the design and the circuit details of a high-sensitivity microwave
vector detection system, which is aiming for studying the low-dimensional
electron system embedded in the slots of a coplanar waveguide at low
temperatures. The coplanar waveguide sample is placed inside a phase-locked
loop; the phase change of the sample may cause a corresponding change in the
operation frequency, which can be measured precisely. We also employ a
double-pulse modulation on the microwave signals, which comprises a fast pulse
modulation for gated averaging and a slow pulse modulation for lock-in
detection. In measurements on real samples at low temperatures, this system
provides much better resolutions in both amplitude and phase than most of the

Physiological, behavioral and subjective sadness reactivity in frontotemporal dementia subtypes.
Frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a neurodegenerative disease broadly characterized by socioemotional impairments, includes three clinical subtypes: behavioral variant FTD (bvFTD), semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA) and non-fluent variant primary progressive aphasia (nfvPPA). Emerging evidence has shown emotional reactivity impairments in bvFTD and svPPA, whereas emotional reactivity in nfvPPA is far less studied. In 105 patients with FTD (49 bvFTD, 31 svPPA and 25 nfvPPA) and 27 healthy controls, we examined three aspects of emotional reactivity (physiology, facial behavior and subjective experience) in response to a sad film. In a subset of the sample, we also examined the neural correlates of diminished aspects of reactivity using voxel-based morphometry. Results indicated that all three subtypes of FTD showed diminished physiological responding in respiration rate and diastolic blood pressure; patients with bvFTD and svPPA also showed diminished subjective experience, and no subtypes showed diminished facial behavior. Moreover, there were differences among the clinical subtypes in brain regions where smaller volumes were associated with diminished sadness reactivity. These results show that emotion impairments extend to sadness reactivity in FTD and underscore the importance of considering different aspects of sadness reactivity in multiple clinical subtypes for characterizing emotional deficits and associated neurodegeneration in FTD
Related Party Transactions and Earnings Management
This study examines the association between related party transactions and earnings man-agement, based on a sample of 50 Indonesian publicly listed companies for the periods ending 2004 and 2005. The hypothesis developed in this study draw on past literature and the tenets of agency theory which suggest that the existence of related party transactions represent potential conflict of interest which may results in earnings management and appropriation by controlling shareholder to minority shareholders. The empirical findings of the study suggest that there is no statistically significant evidence of the association between related party transactions and earnings manage-ment attributes. Additional sensitivity analysis conducted with alternative measures of earnings management and related party transactions confirm the initial regression results. The results of this study suggest that the mere presence of related party transactions in Indonesian companies does not necessarily indicate that management engage in greater earnings management. This study pro-vides a valuable starting point for similar research in other developing countries
Interpersonal prosodic correlation in frontotemporal dementia.
Communication accommodation describes how individuals adjust their communicative style to that of their conversational partner. We predicted that interpersonal prosodic correlation related to pitch and timing would be decreased in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). We predicted that the interpersonal correlation in a timing measure and a pitch measure would be increased in right temporal FTD (rtFTD) due to sparing of the neural substrate for speech timing and pitch modulation but loss of social semantics. We found no significant effects in bvFTD, but conversations including rtFTD demonstrated higher interpersonal correlations in speech rate than healthy controls
Export production and its regulating factors in the West Antarctica Peninsula region of the Southern Ocean

Gould in Jan., 2008 at 49 stations on a 20 × 100 km grid in the West Antarctica Peninsula (WAP) region of the Southern Ocean. In this study, [O2]/[Ar] ratios and the triple isotope composition of dissolved O2 were measured, and were used to estimate net community O2 production (NCP) and gross primary O2 production (GPP), respectively. These estimates are further converted to carbon export production, primary production and the f-ratio. Our measurements give NCP ranging from −3 to 76 mmol O2 m−2 day−1 (−25 to 650 mg C m−2 day−1), and GPP from 40 to 220 mmol O2 m−2 day−1 (180 to 1010 mg C m−2 day−1). The O2 NCP/GPP ratios range from −0.04 to 0.43, corresponding to f-ratios of −0.08 to 0.83. NCP and the NCP/GPP ratio are highest in the northern coastal areas, and decrease to lower values toward the southern coastal area and the open ocean. The inshore-offshore gradient appears to be regulated primarily by iron availability, as supported by the positive correlation between NCP and Fv/Fm ratios (r2 = 0.22, p < 0.05). Mixed layer depth (MLD) is inversely correlated with NCP (r2 = 0.21, p < 0.002) and NCP/GPP (r2 = 0.21, p < 0.02), and highest NCP occurred in the fresh water lenses probably formed from melted coastal glaciers. These results suggest that export production and the f-ratio increase where water stratification is intensified by input of fresh meltwater, and that mixed layer stratification is the major factor regulating NCP in the inner-shelf and coastal regions. Along-shelf variability of phytoplankton community composition is highly correlated with NCP, i.e., NCP increases when the diatom-dominated community in the south transitions to the cryptophyte-dominated one in the north. A high correlation is also observed between NCP and the logarithm of the surface chlorophyll concentration (r2 = 0.72, p < 0.0001) , which makes it possible to estimate carbon export as a function of Chl a concentration in this region.This research was supported by NSF-OPP

Non-Markovian entanglement dynamics of quantum continuous variable systems in thermal environments
We study two continuous variable systems (or two harmonic oscillators) and
investigate their entanglement evolution under the influence of non-Markovian
thermal environments. The continuous variable systems could be two modes of
electromagnetic fields or two nanomechanical oscillators in the quantum domain.
We use quantum open system method to derive the non-Markovian master equations
of the reduced density matrix for two different but related models of the
continuous variable systems. The two models both consist of two interacting
harmonic oscillators. In model A, each of the two oscillators is coupled to its
own independent thermal reservoir, while in model B the two oscillators are
coupled to a common reservoir. To quantify the degrees of entanglement for the
bipartite continuous variable systems in Gaussian states, logarithmic
negativity is used. We find that the dynamics of the quantum entanglement is
sensitive to the initial states, the oscillator-oscillator interaction, the
oscillator-environment interaction and the coupling to a common bath or to

Mapping Monte Carlo to Langevin dynamics: A Fokker-Planck approach
We propose a general method of using the Fokker-Planck equation (FPE) to link
the Monte-Carlo (MC) and the Langevin micromagnetic schemes. We derive the
drift and disusion FPE terms corresponding to the MC method and show that it is
analytically equivalent to the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG)
equation of Langevin-based micromagnetics. Subsequent results such as the time
quantification factor for the Metropolis MC method can be rigorously derived
from this mapping equivalence. The validity of the mapping is shown by the
close numerical convergence between the MC method and the LLG equation for the
case of a single magnetic particle as well as interacting arrays of particles.
We also found that our Metropolis MC is accurate for a large range of damping
factors , unlike previous time-quantified MC methods which break down

An idiographic statistical approach to clinical hypothesis testing for routine psychotherapy: A case study.
In order to develop more targeted, efficient, and effective psychotherapeutic interventions, calls have been made in the literature for greater use of idiographic hypothesis testing. Idiographic analyses can provide useful information regarding mechanisms of change within individuals over time during treatment. However, it remains unclear how clinicians might utilize idiographic statistical analyses during routine treatment to test clinical hypotheses, and in turn, guide treatment. We present an idiographic statistical framework for clinical hypothesis testing with routine treatment data that enables clinicians to examine a) whether the client's symptoms and hypothesized mechanisms change over time, b) whether trajectories of change reflect the timing of interventions, c) whether mechanisms predict subsequent symptoms, and d) whether relationships exist between multiple mechanisms, symptoms, or other treatment-related constructs over time. We demonstrate the utility of the approach for clinical hypothesis testing by applying it to routine treatment data collected from a 56 year-old male who presented with a combination of anger problems, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. We discuss how results from analyses can inform the case-formulation and guide clinical decision-making. We aim to make these methods more accessible by providing an online platform where clinicians can enter client data, test their clinical hypotheses using idiographic analyses, and utilize the results to disseminate their findings
Patchy Amphiphilic Dendrimers Bind Adenovirus and Control Its Host Interactions and in Vivo Distribution
The surface of proteins is heterogeneous with sophisticated but precise hydrophobic and hydrophilic patches, which is essential for their diverse biological functions. To emulate such distinct surface patterns on macromolecules, we used rigid spherical synthetic dendrimers (polyphenylene dendrimers) to provide controlled amphiphilic surface patches with molecular precision. We identified an,. I optimal spatial arrangement of these patches on certain dendrimers that enabled their interaction with human adenovirus 5 (Ads). Patchy dendrimers bound to the surface of Ads formed a synthetic polymer corona that greatly altered various host interactions of Ads as well as in vivo distribution. The dendrimer corona (1) improved the ability of Ad5-derived gene transfer vectors to transduce cells deficient for the primary Ad5 cell membrane receptor and (2) modulated the binding of Ads to blood coagulation factor X, one of the most critical virus host interactions in the bloodstream. It significantly enhanced the transduction efficiency of Ad5 while also protecting it from neutralization by natural antibodies and the complement system in human whole blood. Ads with a synthetic dendrimer corona revealed profoundly altered in vivo distribution, improved transduction of heart, and dampened vector sequestration by liver and spleen. We propose the design of bioactive polymers that bind protein surfaces solely based on their amphiphilic surface patches and protect against a naturally occurring protein corona, which is highly attractive to improve Ad5-based in vivo gene therapy applications
