Investigation to develop a multistage forest sampling inventory system using ERTS-1 imagery
The author has identified the following significant results. The annotation system produced a RMSE of about 200 m ground distance in the MSS data system with the control data used. All the analytical MSS interpretation models tried were highly significant. However, the gains in forest sampling efficiency that can be achieved by using the models vary from zero to over 50 percent depending on the area to which they are applied and the sampling method used. Among the sampling methods tried, regression sampling yielded substantial and the most consistent gains. The single most significant variable in the interpretation model was the difference between bands 5 and 7. The contrast variable, computed by the Hadamard transform was significant but did not contribute much to the interpretation model. Forest areas containing very large timber volumes because of large tree sizes were not separable from areas of similar crown cover but containing smaller trees using ERTS image interpretation only. All correlations between space derived timber volume predictions and estimates obtained from aerial and ground sampling were relatively low but significant and stable. There was a much stronger relationship between variables derived from MSS and U2 data than between U2 and ground data
Colors of Inner Disk Classical Kuiper Belt Objects
We present new optical broadband colors, obtained with the Keck 1 and Vatican
Advanced Technology telescopes, for six objects in the inner classical Kuiper
Belt. Objects in the inner classical Kuiper Belt are of interest as they may
represent the surviving members of the primordial Kuiper Belt that formed
interior to the current position of the 3:2 resonance with Neptune, the current
position of the plutinos, or, alternatively, they may be objects formed at a
different heliocentric distance that were then moved to their present
locations. The six new colors, combined with four previously published, show
that the 10 inner belt objects with known colors form a neutral clump and a
reddish clump in B-R color. Nonparametric statistical tests show no significant
difference between the B-R color distribution of the inner disk objects
compared to the color distributions of Centaurs, plutinos, or scattered disk
objects. However, the B-R color distribution of the inner classical Kuiper belt
objects does differ significantly from the distribution of colors in the cold
(low inclination) main classical Kuiper belt. The cold main classical objects
are predominately red, while the inner classical belt objects are a mixture of
neutral and red. The color difference may reveal the existence of a gradient in
the composition and /or surface processing history in the primordial Kuiper
Belt, or indicate that the inner disk objects are not dynamically analogous to
the cold main classical belt objects.Comment: Accepted for publication in A
Proof of a conjecture of Polya on the zeros of successive derivatives of real entire functions
We prove Polya's conjecture of 1943: For a real entire function of order
greater than 2, with finitely many non-real zeros, the number of non-real zeros
of the n-th derivative tends to infinity with n. We use the saddle point method
and potential theory, combined with the theory of analytic functions with
positive imaginary part in the upper half-plane.Comment: 26 page

Many mechanisms purport to explain how nutritional signals during early development are manifested as disease in the adult offspring. While these describe processes leading from nutritional insult to development of the actual pathology, the initial underlying cause of the programming effect remains elusive. To establish the primary drivers of programming, this study aimed to capture embryonic gene and protein changes in the whole embryo at the time of nutritional insult rather than downstream phenotypic effects. By using a cross-over design of two well established models of maternal protein and iron restriction we aimed to identify putative common “gatekeepers” which may drive nutritional programming
Constituting monetary conservatives via the 'savings habit': New Labour and the British housing market bubble
The ongoing world credit crunch might well kill off the most recent bubble dynamics in the British housing market by driving prices systematically downwards from their 2007 peak. Nonetheless, the experience of that bubble still warrants analytical attention. The Labour Government might not have been responsible for consciously creating it, but it has certainly grasped the opportunities the bubble has provided in an attempt to enforce a process of agential change at the heart of the British economy. The key issue in this respect is the way in which the Government has challenged the legitimacy of passive welfare receipts in favour of establishing a welfare system based on incorporating the individual into an active asset-holding society. The housing market has taken on new political significance as a means for individuals first to acquire assets and then to accumulate wealth on the back of asset ownership. The ensuing integration of the housing market into an increasingly reconfigured welfare system has permeated into the politics of everyday life. It has been consistent with individuals remaking their political subjectivities in line with preferences for the type of conservative monetary policies that typically keep house price bubbles inflated

A number of results are proved concerning non-real zeros of derivatives of real and strictly non-real meromorphic functions in the plane
Rigidity of escaping dynamics for transcendental entire functions
We prove an analog of Boettcher's theorem for transcendental entire functions
in the Eremenko-Lyubich class B. More precisely, let f and g be entire
functions with bounded sets of singular values and suppose that f and g belong
to the same parameter space (i.e., are *quasiconformally equivalent* in the
sense of Eremenko and Lyubich). Then f and g are conjugate when restricted to
the set of points which remain in some sufficiently small neighborhood of
infinity under iteration. Furthermore, this conjugacy extends to a
quasiconformal self-map of the plane.
We also prove that this conjugacy is essentially unique. In particular, we
show that an Eremenko-Lyubich class function f has no invariant line fields on
its escaping set.
Finally, we show that any two hyperbolic Eremenko-Lyubich class functions f
and g which belong to the same parameter space are conjugate on their sets of

Robotic ubiquitous cognitive ecology for smart homes
Robotic ecologies are networks of heterogeneous robotic devices pervasively embedded in everyday environments, where they cooperate to perform complex tasks. While their potential makes them increasingly popular, one fundamental problem is how to make them both autonomous and adaptive, so as to reduce the amount of preparation, pre-programming and human supervision that they require in real world applications. The project RUBICON develops learning solutions which yield cheaper, adaptive and efficient coordination of robotic ecologies. The approach we pursue builds upon a unique combination of methods from cognitive robotics, machine learning, planning and agent- based control, and wireless sensor networks. This paper illustrates the innovations advanced by RUBICON in each of these fronts before describing how the resulting techniques have been integrated and applied to a smart home scenario. The resulting system is able to provide useful services and pro-actively assist the users in their activities. RUBICON learns through an incremental and progressive approach driven by the feed- back received from its own activities and from the user, while also self-organizing the manner in which it uses available sensors, actuators and other functional components in the process. This paper summarises some of the lessons learned by adopting such an approach and outlines promising directions for future work
Application of Quadratic Constitutive Relation to One- Equation k-kL Turbulence Model
This paper analyzes the accuracy of the recently developed one-equation k-kL turbulence model with Quadratic Constitutive Relation (QCR) compared to the linear Boussinesq relation and Algebraic Reynolds Stress Model (ARSM). The computational results in several benchmark cases from NASA TMR are compared to other widely used one equation turbulence models with QCR, such as Spalart-Allmaras model (SA), Wray-Agarwal model (WA) and SST k-ω model. In particular, one-equation k-kL-QCR model shows good accuracy with experimental data for supersonic flow in a square duct where the effect of QCR is clearly visible in capturing the secondary flow vortices which is not feasible with the any standard model without QCR. In addition, both one-equation k-kL and one-equation k- kL-QCR models show better accuracy for subsonic separated flow in 3D NASA Glenn S- duct compared to other one-equation models. Other test cases show little difference in the results obtained without and with QCR
