The pulsar spectral index distribution
The flux density spectra of radio pulsars are known to be steep and, to first
order, described by a power-law relationship of the form S_{\nu} \propto
\nu^{\alpha}, where S_{\nu} is the flux density at some frequency \nu and
\alpha is the spectral index. Although measurements of \alpha have been made
over the years for several hundred pulsars, a study of the intrinsic
distribution of pulsar spectra has not been carried out. From the result of
pulsar surveys carried out at three different radio frequencies, we use
population synthesis techniques and a likelihood analysis to deduce what
underlying spectral index distribution is required to replicate the results of
these surveys. We find that in general the results of the surveys can be
modelled by a Gaussian distribution of spectral indices with a mean of -1.4 and
unit standard deviation. We also consider the impact of the so-called
"Gigahertz-peaked spectrum" pulsars. The fraction of peaked spectrum sources in
the population with significant turn-over at low frequencies appears to be at
most 10%. We demonstrate that high-frequency (>2 GHz) surveys preferentially
select flatter-spectrum pulsars and the converse is true for lower-frequency
(<1 GHz) surveys. This implies that any correlations between \alpha and other
pulsar parameters (for example age or magnetic field) need to carefully account
for selection biases in pulsar surveys. We also expect that many known pulsars
which have been detected at high frequencies will have shallow, or positive,
spectral indices. The majority of pulsars do not have recorded flux density
measurements over a wide frequency range, making it impossible to constrain
their spectral shapes. We also suggest that such measurements would allow an

Using the lost letter technique to measure real-life behavioral effects of alcohol use
Introduction and aims: People’s behaviors after alcohol use are more extreme and alcohol has a narrowing effect on a person’s cognitive capacity. We tested this effect, making use of the Lost-Letter Technique (LLT), in which the return rate of “lost letters” by public mail is used to measure altruistic behavior. We hypothesized that return rates would be lower when people are under the influence of alcohol, and that an anti-alcohol prime in the address would even further decrease return rates. Design and methods: 768 letters were dropped, half of those at times when some degree of intoxication was likely versus when sober passers-by were common. Three different addressees were used to convey an anti-alcohol cue, a charitable cue, and a neutral cue. Results: The average response rate was 33.1%, and was significantly lower during late bar hours than during lunch hours (20.3% versus 45.8%). Also, when envelopes were found by people who were more likely to have consumed alcohol, anti-alcohol cues gained significantly lower response rates (12.7% versus 23.1%). Discussion and conclusions: This study confirms that alcohol use causes less altruistic behavior and different responses to alcohol-related cues, suggesting that LLT is a promising method to study people’s behavior. Future research could also focus on other substances, (mood-)states, and technology as a means of data collection
Binding of metals to macromolecular organic acids in natural waters
Trace metal speciation and bioavailability have become keys to current day toxicity and risk assessments. For many metals, macromolecular organic acids constitute the major ligand in fresh water and soil solution. Therefore, understanding their characteristics and behaviour is necessary for understanding trace metal behaviour. This study comprises investigations of the proton- and copper-binding properties of hydrophobic and hydrophilic dissolved organic matter fractions, and competition effects of iron(III) and aluminium. The solutions studied were a forest floor solution and a municipal solid waste incinerator bottom ash leachate. Two geochemical models (SHM and NICA-Donnan) were tested and calibrated against the experimental data. A structural analysis of the binding mode of iron(III) to fulvic acid in acid aqueous solutions was made using extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the bottom ash leachate had fulvic acid-like properties and was dominated by the hydrophilic acid fraction. Three organic fractions (hydrophobic, transphilic and hydrophilic) were isolated from the forest floor solution using an XAD-8/XAD-4 tandem. All fractions were characterised by distinct but differing proton-binding properties, suggesting a more acidic character than 'generic' fulvic acid. The copper-binding isotherms were very similar for all three fractions and suggested strong copper binding to a small number of sites. In general, both models tested could be adjusted to obtain good fits to data on both proton- and copper-binding, but iron(III) and aluminium competition was better predicted by the SHM than the NICA-Donnan model. Only mononuclear iron(III) complexes were included in the model calculations, as the EXAFS study showed that these ¬dominated in the aqueous phase. Studies on untreated soil solution indicated that the three isolated fractions were the only contributors to the observed copper binding and together constitute the 'active' DOC fraction. Thus, combination of Leenheer fractionation data with the model parameters derived in this study is recommended for improved predictions of trace metal speciation in soil solutions. However, further studies along this research line, including other samples and trace metals, are highly recommended
Role of lysozyme inhibitors in the virulence of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli
Lysozymes are key effectors of the animal innate immunity system that kill bacteria by hydrolyzing peptidoglycan, their major cell wall constituent. Recently, specific inhibitors of the three major lysozyme families occuring in the animal kingdom (c-, g- and i-type) have been discovered in Gram-negative bacteria, and it has been proposed that these may help bacteria to evade lysozyme mediated lysis during interaction with an animal host. Escherichia coli produces two inhibitors that are specific for c-type lysozyme (Ivy, Inhibitor of vertebrate lysozyme; MliC, membrane bound lysozyme inhibitor of c-type lysozyme), and one specific for g-type lysozyme (PliG, periplasmic lysozyme inhibitor of g-type lysozyme). Here, we investigated the role of these lysozyme inhibitors in virulence of Avian Pathogenic E. coli (APEC) using a serum resistance test and a subcutaneous chicken infection model. Knock-out of mliC caused a strong reduction in serum resistance and in in vivo virulence that could be fully restored by genetic complementation, whereas ivy and pliG could be knocked out without effect on serum resistance and virulence. This is the first in vivo evidence for the involvement of lysozyme inhibitors in bacterial virulence. Remarkably, the virulence of a ivy mliC double knock-out strain was restored to almost wild-type level, and this strain also had a substantial residual periplasmic lysozyme inhibitory activity that was higher than that of the single knock-out strains. This suggests the existence of an additional periplasmic lysozyme inhibitor in this strain, and indicates a regulatory interaction in the expression of the different inhibitors

To describe the full spectrum of surface fluctuations of the interface
between phase-separated colloid-polymer mixtures from low scattering vector q
(classical capillary wave theory) to high q (bulk-like fluctuations), one must
take account of the interface's bending rigidity. We find that the bending
rigidity is negative and that on approach to the critical point it vanishes
proportionally to the interfacial tension. Both features are in agreement with

Simulation and experimental verification of W-band finite frequency selective surfaces on infinite background with 3D full wave solver NSPWMLFMA
We present the design, processing and testing of a W-band finite by infinite and a finite by finite Grounded Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSSs) on infinite background. The 3D full wave solver Nondirective Stable Plane Wave Multilevel Fast Multipole Algorithm (NSPWMLFMA) is used to simulate the FSSs. As NSPWMLFMA solver improves the complexity matrix-vector product in an iterative solver from O(N(2)) to O(N log N) which enables the solver to simulate finite arrays with faster execution time and manageable memory requirements. The simulation results were verified by comparing them with the experimental results. The comparisons demonstrate the accuracy of the NSPWMLFMA solver. We fabricated the corresponding FSS arrays on quartz substrate with photolithographic etching techniques and characterized the vector S-parameters with a free space Millimeter Wave Vector Network Analyzer (MVNA)

These days energy has become one of the most important needs for society, considering the scarcity of basic household needs such as kerosene and firewood. The fulfilling of these needs could be solved by utilizing renewable energy. Some renewable energy only needs simple technology to be produced, such as biogas. Biogas could be produced through utilizing the farm waste such as cow manure that are generally wasted and polluted the environment.In Mamala Village, Central Maluku, the technology to produce biogas could be developed, considering the status of mamala as one of the center for cow husbandry in Central Maluku. Currently there are around 79 that are farmed by either group of farmers or individual farmers. The needs for compost in this village are very high because of the rarity and the expensive price of chemical fertilizers (inorganic), meanwhile 51,74% of the resident of this village are grow corps as their main source of income. The usage of chemical fertilizer also decreases farms production. Therefore, the supply of organic fertilizer such as compost that could be produced with cow manures, and sagoo waste should be increased. The produced composts could be sold or used for any kind of crops that are being cultivated in the village to feed livestock. In return the vegetables that are cultivated to feed livestock could also be sold to increase prosperity of the villagers
