    First direct mass-measurement of the two-neutron halo nucleus 6He and improved mass for the four-neutron halo 8He

    The first direct mass-measurement of 6^{6}He has been performed with the TITAN Penning trap mass spectrometer at the ISAC facility. In addition, the mass of 8^{8}He was determined with improved precision over our previous measurement. The obtained masses are mm(6^{6}He) = 6.018 885 883(57) u and mm(8^{8}He) = 8.033 934 44(11) u. The 6^{6}He value shows a deviation from the literature of 4σ\sigma. With these new mass values and the previously measured atomic isotope shifts we obtain charge radii of 2.060(8) fm and 1.959(16) fm for 6^{6}He and 8^{8}He respectively. We present a detailed comparison to nuclear theory for 6^6He, including new hyperspherical harmonics results. A correlation plot of the point-proton radius with the two-neutron separation energy demonstrates clearly the importance of three-nucleon forces.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    First Penning-trap mass measurement in the millisecond half-life range: the exotic halo nucleus 11Li

    In this letter, we report a new mass for 11^{11}Li using the trapping experiment TITAN at TRIUMF's ISAC facility. This is by far the shortest-lived nuclide, t1/2=8.8mst_{1/2} = 8.8 \rm{ms}, for which a mass measurement has ever been performed with a Penning trap. Combined with our mass measurements of 8,9^{8,9}Li we derive a new two-neutron separation energy of 369.15(65) keV: a factor of seven more precise than the best previous value. This new value is a critical ingredient for the determination of the halo charge radius from isotope-shift measurements. We also report results from state-of-the-art atomic-physics calculations using the new mass and extract a new charge radius for 11^{11}Li. This result is a remarkable confluence of nuclear and atomic physics.Comment: Formatted for submission to PR

    Vaccinia virus temperature-sensitive mutants in the A28 gene produce non-infectious virions that bind to cells but are defective in entry

    AbstractThe vaccinia virus temperature-sensitive mutations Cts6 and Cts9 were mapped by marker rescue and DNA sequencing to the A28 gene. Cts6 and Cts9 contain an identical 2-bp deletion truncating the A28 protein and removing the fourth conserved cysteine near the C-terminus. Cts9 mutant virions produced at 40 °C were non-infectious and unable to cause cytopathic effect. However, the mutant A28 protein localized to purified mature virions (MV) at 31 °C and 40 °C. MV of Cts9 produced at 40 °C bound to cells but did not enter cells. Low pH treatment of Cts9-infected cells at 18 h p.i. failed to produce fusion from within at 40 °C, but gave fusion at 31 °C. Adsorption of Cts9 mutant virions to cells followed by low pH treatment showed a defect in fusion from without. The Cts9 phenotype suggests that the A28 protein is involved in both virus entry and cell–cell fusion, and supports the linkage between the two processes

    Isotope Shift Measurements of Stable and Short-Lived Lithium Isotopes for Nuclear Charge Radii Determination

    Changes in the mean-square nuclear charge radii along the lithium isotopic chain were determined using a combination of precise isotope shift measurements and theoretical atomic structure calculations. Nuclear charge radii of light elements are of high interest due to the appearance of the nuclear halo phenomenon in this region of the nuclear chart. During the past years we have developed a new laser spectroscopic approach to determine the charge radii of lithium isotopes which combines high sensitivity, speed, and accuracy to measure the extremely small field shift of an 8 ms lifetime isotope with production rates on the order of only 10,000 atoms/s. The method was applied to all bound isotopes of lithium including the two-neutron halo isotope Li-11 at the on-line isotope separators at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany and at TRIUMF, Vancouver, Canada. We describe the laser spectroscopic method in detail, present updated and improved values from theory and experiment, and discuss the results.Comment: 34 pages, 24 figures, 14 table

    Penning-Trap Mass Measurements of the Neutron-Rich K and Ca Isotopes: Resurgence of the N = 28 Shell Strength

    We present Penning-trap mass measurements of neutron-rich 44,47-50K and 49,50Ca isotopes carried out at the TITAN facility at TRIUMF-ISAC. The 44K mass measurement was performed with a charge-bred 4+ ion utilizing the TITAN EBIT, and agrees with the literature. The mass excesses obtained for 47K and 49,50Ca are more precise and agree with the values published in the 2003 Atomic Mass Evaluation (AME'03). The 48,49,50K mass excesses are more precise than the AME'03 values by more than one order of magnitude. For 48,49K, we find deviations by 7 sigma and 10 sigma, respectively. The new 49K mass excess lowers significantly the two-neutron separation energy at the neutron number N=30 compared with the separation energy calculated from the AME'03 mass-excess values, and thus, increases the N=28 neutron-shell gap energy at Z=19 by approximately 1 MeV.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for PR

    Vessel Formation Is Induced Prior to the Appearance of Cartilage in BMP-2-Mediated Heterotopic Ossification

    Heterotopic ossification (HO), or endochondral bone formation at nonskeletal sites, often results from traumatic injury and can lead to devastating consequences. Alternatively, the ability to harness this phenomenon would greatly enhance current orthopedic tools for treating segmental bone defects. Thus, understanding the earliest events in this process potentially would allow us to design more targeted therapies to either block or enhance this process. Using a murine model of HO induced by delivery of adenovirus-transduced cells expressing bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2), we show here that one of the earliest stages in this process is the establishment of new vessels prior to the appearance of cartilage. As early as 48 hours after induction of HO, we observed the appearance of brown adipocytes expressing vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) simultaneous with endothelial progenitor replication. This was determined by using a murine model that possesses the VEGF receptor 2 (Flk1) promoter containing an endothelial cell enhancer driving the expression of nuclear-localized yellow fluorescent protein (YFP). Expression of this marker has been shown previously to correlate with the establishment of new vasculature, and the nuclear localization of YFP expression allowed us to quantify changes in endothelial cell numbers. We found a significant increase in Flk1-H2B::YFP cells in BMP-2-treated animals compared with controls. The increase in endothelial progenitors occurred 3 days prior to the appearance of early cartilage. The data collectively suggest that vascular remodeling and growth may be essential to modify the microenvironment and enable engraftment of the necessary progenitors to form endochondral bone. © 2010 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research
