    SemEval-2018 Task 5: Counting Events and Participants in the Long Tail

    This paper discusses SemEval-2018 Task 5: a referential quantification task of counting events and participants in local, long-tail news documents with high ambiguity. The complexity of this task challenges systems to establish the meaning, reference and identity across documents. The task consists of three subtasks and spans across three domains. We detail the design of this referential quantification task, describe the participating systems, and present additional analysis to gain deeper insight into their performance

    Improving Graph-to-Text Generation Using Cycle Training

    Natural Language Generation (NLG) from graph structured data is an important step for a number of tasks, including e.g. generating explanations, automated reporting, and conversational interfaces. Large generative language models are currently the state of the art for open ended NLG for graph data. However, these models can produce erroneous text (termed hallucinations). In this paper, we investigate the application of {\em cycle training} in order to reduce these errors. Cycle training involves alternating the generation of text from an input graph with the extraction of a knowledge graph where the model should ensure consistency between the extracted graph and the input graph. Our results show that cycle training improves performance on evaluation metrics (e.g., METEOR, DAE) that consider syntactic and semantic relations, and more in generally, that cycle training is useful to reduce erroneous output when generating text from graphs

    Reasoning about Ambiguous Definite Descriptions

    Natural language reasoning plays an increasingly important role in improving language models' ability to solve complex language understanding tasks. An interesting use case for reasoning is the resolution of context-dependent ambiguity. But no resources exist to evaluate how well Large Language Models can use explicit reasoning to resolve ambiguity in language. We propose to use ambiguous definite descriptions for this purpose and create and publish the first benchmark dataset consisting of such phrases. Our method includes all information required to resolve the ambiguity in the prompt, which means a model does not require anything but reasoning to do well.     Allograft rejection is a complex process, which requires interactions between different cell types and a variety of soluble factors, such as cytokines. In this review we discuss the role of cytokines in the induction and effector phases of the rejection process and in the induction and maintenance of allospecific graft tolerance. Furthermore, we discuss the feasibility of clinical graft function monitoring by measuring cytokines and the possibilities for intervention in the cytokine network in order to inhibit graft rejection and eventually obtain graft acceptance

    Field Emission Dark Current of Technical Metallic Electrodes

    In the framework of the Low Emittance Gun (LEG) project, high gradient acceleration of a low emittance electron beam will be necessary. In order to achieve this acceleration a -500 kV, 250 ns FWHM, pulse will be applied in between two electrodes. Those electrodes should sustain the pulsed field without arcing, must not outgass and must not emit electrons. Ion back bombardment, and dark current will be damageable to the electron source as well as for the low emittance beam.     Botanische GĂ€rten bieten den Botanischen Instituten die Grundlage fĂŒr deren Forschungen und Besuchern einen Einblick in die Pflanzenwelt. Die mit dem Wissenschaftszweig der Botanik entstanden UniversitĂ€tsgĂ€rten haben ihren Mittelpunkt in der Botanischen Forschung und Lehre, vor allem in den Bereichen Taxonomie und Ökologie. Die Grundlagen und der Inhalt der Botanischen Arbeit sind demnach insbesondere Sammlungen. DarĂŒber hinaus erfordert die Teilnahme im IPEN (International Plant Exchange Network) seit einigen Jahren die Einhaltung strenger Kriterien der CBD (Convention on Biological Diversity) beim Austausch von Samen und Pflanzenmaterial. Die Entwicklung eines Datenbank gestĂŒtzten Informationssystems fĂŒr Botanische GĂ€rten wird durch eine Reihe von Beobachtungen motiviert und muss diverse Randbedingungen beachten. Dies wird im Folgenden genauer erlĂ€utert. Sodann werden der Entwurf und eine erste Realisierung des Informationssystems BoGSy beschrieben, welches an der UniversitĂ€t MĂŒnster entwickelt wird und diesen Bedingungen genĂŒgt.<br/

    Emergency calls and need for emergency care in patients looked after by a palliative care team: Retrospective interview study with bereaved relatives

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>During the last stage of life, palliative care patients often experience episodes of respiratory distress, bleeding, pain or seizures. In such situations, caregivers may call emergency medical services leading to unwanted hospital admissions. The study aims to show the influence of our palliative care team to reducing emergency calls by cancer patients or their relatives during the last six month of life.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Fifty relatives of deceased patients who had been attended by our palliative care team were randomly selected. Data was obtained retrospectively during a structured interview. In addition to demographic data, the number of emergency calls made during the final six months of the patient's life, the reason for the call and the mental compound score (MCS-12) of the caregivers was registered.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Forty-six relatives agreed to the interview. Emergency calls were placed for 18 patients (39%) during the final six months of their lives. There were a total of 23 emergency calls. In 16 cases (70%) the patient was admitted to the hospital. Twenty-one (91%) of the calls were made before patients had been enrolled to receive palliative care from the team, and two (9%) were made afterwards. The mean mental compound score of the caregivers at the time of the interview was 41 (range 28–57). There was a lack of correlation between MCS-12 and number of emergency calls.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Emergency calls were more likely to occur if the patients were not being attended by our palliative care team. Because of the lack of correlation between MCS-12 and the number of emergency calls, the MCS-12 cannot indicate that acutely stressful situations triggered the calls. However, we conclude that special palliative care programs can reduce psychosocial strain in family caregivers. Therefore, the number of emergency calls may be reduced and this fact allows more palliative patients to die at home.</p
