Septic Arthritis Caused by Legionella dumoffii in a Patient with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus-Like Disease
We describe a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)-like disease on immunosuppressive treatment who developed septic arthritis of the knee involving Legionella dumoffii. Cultures initially remained negative. A broad-range 16S PCR using synovial fluid revealed L. dumoffii rRNA genes, a finding that was subsequently confirmed by positive Legionella culture results
Physical limitations to the spatial resolution of solid-state detectors
In this paper we explore the effect of -ray emission, fluctuations in
th e signal deposition on the detection of charged particles in silicon-based
detec tors. We show that these two effects ultimately limit the resolution that
can be achieved by interpolation of the signal in finely segmented
position-sensitive solid-state devices.Comment: 5 page
Method to make a single-step etch mask for 3D monolithic nanostructures
Current nanostructure fabrication by etching is usually limited to planar
structures as they are defined by a planar mask. The realisation of
three-dimensional (3D) nanostructures by etching requires technologies beyond
planar masks. We present a method to fabricate a 3D mask that allows to etch
three-dimensional monolithic nanostructures by using only CMOS-compatible
processes. The mask is written in a hard-mask layer that is deposited on two
adjacent inclined surfaces of a Si wafer. By projecting in single step two
different 2D patterns within one 3D mask on the two inclined surfaces, the
mutual alignment between the patterns is ensured. Thereby after the mask
pattern is defined, the etching of deep pores in two oblique directions yields
a three-dimensional structure in Si. As a proof of concept we demonstrate 3D
mask fabrication for three-dimensional diamond-like photonic band gap crystals
in silicon. The fabricated crystals reveal a broad stop gap in optical
reflectivity measurements. We propose how 3D nanostructures with five different
Bravais lattices can be realised, namely cubic, tetragonal, orthorhombic,
monoclinic, and hexagonal, and demonstrate a mask for a 3D hexagonal crystal.
We also demonstrate the mask for a diamond-structure crystal with a 3D array of
cavities. In general, the 2D patterns for the different surfaces can be
completely independent and still be in perfect mutual alignment. Indeed, we
observe an alignment accuracy of better than 3.0 nm between the 2D mask
patterns on the inclined surfaces, which permits one to etch well-defined
monolithic 3D nanostructures.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figure
Building a Socio-technical Perspective of Community Resilience with a Semiotic Approach
Situated in the diversity and adversity of real-life contexts facing crisis situations, this research aims at boosting the resilience process within communities supported by digital and social technology. In this paper, eight community leaders in different parts of the world are invited to express their issues and wishes regarding the support of technology to face social challenges. Methods and artefacts based on the Organisational Semiotics (OS) and the Socially-Aware computing have been applied to analyse and consolidate this data. By providing both a systemic view of the problem and also leading to the identification of requirements, the analysis evidences some benefits of the OS-based approach to consolidate perspectives from different real-life scenarios towards building a socio-technical solution
From Judgment to Justice: Implementing International and Regional Human Rights Decisions
Examines the European, Inter-American, and African human rights systems and United Nations treaty bodies; how well court decisions are implemented; and what monitoring mechanisms exist. Suggests ways to strengthen implementation and, in turn, legitimacy
The Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture for W-algebras
The main result in this paper is the character formula for arbitrary
irreducible highest weight modules of W algebras. The key ingredient is the
functor provided by quantum Hamiltonian reduction, that constructs the W
algebras from affine Kac-Moody algebras and in a similar fashion W modules from
KM modules. Assuming certain properties of this functor, the W characters are
subsequently derived from the Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture for KM algebras. The
result can be formulated in terms of a double coset of the Weyl group of the KM
algebra: the Hasse diagrams give the embedding diagrams of the Verma modules
and the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials give the multiplicities in the characters.Comment: uuencoded file, 29 pages latex, 5 figure
Cosmic rays studied with a hybrid high school detector array
The LORUN/NAHSA system is a pathfinder for hybrid cosmic ray research
combined with education and outreach in the field of astro-particle physics.
Particle detectors and radio antennae were mainly setup by students and placed
on public buildings. After fully digital data acquisition, coincidence
detections were selected. Three candidate events confirmed a working prototype,
which can be multiplied to extend further particle detector arrays on high
schools.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. Nigl, A., Timmermans, C., Schellart, P.,

Successful Primary Treatment of a Hydatidiform Mole with Methotrexate and EMA/CO
Background. The preferred treatment method of most hydatidiform moles is suction aspiration. In rare circumstances uterine abnormalities may preclude surgical treatment. Case. We report a case of complete molar pregnancy successfully treated with methotrexate followed by EMA/CO. A 38-year-old woman with a complete hydatidiform mole and multiple uterine fibroids underwent a failed attempt at suction aspiration. Following treatment with methotrexate, a nonmetastatic persistent trophoblastic tumour developed. Six cycles of EMA/CO led to complete remission. Conclusion. We propose that primary treatment of molar pregnancies with chemotherapy is a useful treatment option in cases where uterine abnormalities interfere with suction aspiration
