The 0.1-200 keV spectrum of the blazar PKS 2005-489 during an active state

The bright BL Lac object PKS 2005-489 was observed by BeppoSAX on November 1-2, 1998, following an active X-ray state detected by RossiXTE. The source, detected between 0.1 and 200 keV, was in a very high state with a continuum well fitted by a steepening spectrum due to synchrotron emission only. Our X-ray spectrum is the flattest ever observed for this source. The different X-ray spectral slopes and fluxes, as measured by various satellites, are consistent with relatively little changes of the peak frequency of the synchrotron emission, always located below 10^{17} Hz. We discuss these results in the framework of synchrotron self-Compton models. We found that for the BeppoSAX observation, the synchrotron peak frequency is between 10^{15} and 2.5x10^{16} Hz, depending on the model assumptions.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    Self-consistent Green's function approaches

We present the fundamental techniques and working equations of many-body Green's function theory for calculating ground state properties and the spectral strength. Green's function methods closely relate to other polynomial scaling approaches discussed in chapters 8 and 10. However, here we aim directly at a global view of the many-fermion structure. We derive the working equations for calculating many-body propagators, using both the Algebraic Diagrammatic Construction technique and the self-consistent formalism at finite temperature. Their implementation is discussed, as well as the inclusion of three-nucleon interactions. The self-consistency feature is essential to guarantee thermodynamic consistency. The pairing and neutron matter models introduced in previous chapters are solved and compared with the other methods in this book.Comment: 58 pages, 14 figures, Submitted to Lect. Electric dipole polarizability of 40^{40}Ca

The electric dipole strength distribution in 40^{40}Ca between 5 and 25 MeV has been determined at RCNP, Osaka, from proton inelastic scattering experiments at very forward angles. Combined with total photoabsorption data at higher excitation energy, this enables an extraction of the electric dipole polarizability αD\alpha_\mathrm{D}(40^{40}Ca) = 1.92(17) fm3^3. Together with the measured αD\alpha_{\rm D} in 48^{48}Ca, it provides a stringent test of modern theoretical approaches, including coupled cluster calculations with chiral effective field theory interactions and state-of-the art energy density functionals. The emerging picture is that for this medium-mass region dipole polarizabilities are well described theoretically, with important constraints for the neutron skin in 48^{48}Ca and related equation of state quantities.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

Arbeitsmarkt, Zuwanderungsgesetz, Bildungspolitik, Workfare, Transfersystem

The relationship between sensory sensitivity and autistic traits in the general population.

    Get PDF
Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) tend to have sensory processing difficulties (Baranek et al. in J Child Psychol Psychiatry 47:591–601, 2006). These difficulties include over- and under-responsiveness to sensory stimuli, and problems modulating sensory input (Ben-Sasson et al. in J Autism Dev Disorders 39:1–11, 2009). As those with ASD exist at the extreme end of a continuum of autistic traits that is also evident in the general population, we investigated the link between ASD and sensory sensitivity in the general population by administering two questionnaires online to 212 adult participants. Results showed a highly significant positive correlation (r = .775, p < .001) between number of autistic traits and the frequency of sensory processing problems. These data suggest a strong link between sensory processing and autistic traits in the general population, which in turn potentially implicates sensory processing problems in social interaction difficulties

Quasiparticle Hall Transport of d-wave Superconductors in Vortex State

We present a theory of quasiparticle Hall transport in strongly type-II superconductors within their vortex state. We establish the existence of integer quantum spin Hall effect in clean unconventional dx2y2d_{x^2-y^2} superconductors in the vortex state from a general analysis of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. The spin Hall conductivity σxys\sigma^s_{xy} is shown to be quantized in units of 8π\frac{\hbar}{8\pi}. This result does not rest on linearization of the BdG equations around Dirac nodes and therefore includes inter-nodal physics in its entirety. In addition, this result holds for a generic inversion-symmetric lattice of vortices as long as the magnetic field BB satisfies Hc1BHc2H_{c1} \ll B \ll H_{c2}. We then derive the Wiedemann-Franz law for the spin and thermal Hall conductivity in the vortex state. In the limit of T0T \to 0, the thermal Hall conductivity satisfies κxy=4π23(kB)2Tσxys\kappa_{x y}=\frac{4\pi^2}{3}(\frac{k_B}{\hbar})^2 T \sigma^s_{xy}. The transitions between different quantized values of σxys\sigma^s_{xy} as well as relation to conventional superconductors are discussed.Comment: 18 pages REVTex, 3 figures, references adde

How Ordinary Elimination Became Gaussian Elimination

    Get PDF
Newton, in notes that he would rather not have seen published, described a process for solving simultaneous equations that later authors applied specifically to linear equations. This method that Euler did not recommend, that Legendre called "ordinary," and that Gauss called "common" - is now named after Gauss: "Gaussian" elimination. Gauss's name became associated with elimination through the adoption, by professional computers, of a specialized notation that Gauss devised for his own least squares calculations. The notation allowed elimination to be viewed as a sequence of arithmetic operations that were repeatedly optimized for hand computing and eventually were described by matrices.Comment: 56 pages, 21 figures, 1 tabl
