In recent years, the memoir boom has left publishers searching far and wide for new material. As part of this trend and the immense demand for anything Amish, non-professional writers have seized the opportunity make their voices heard. While there is a wealth of scholarship on the Amish, the often trauma-filled narratives of the ex-Amish have neither been widely accessible to the public, nor the subject of much academic scrutiny until recently. This article explores the memoir, its genre conventions, and current debates. Furlong’s debut memoir, Why I Left the Amish (2011), is a powerful narrative about a desperate struggle for self-determination. She breaks the silence on mental illness as well as physical and sexual abuse among the Amish, while also providing readers with cultural information and alternative perspectives on Amish traditions and values. At the same time, Why I Left the Amish raises a few ethnical concerns. In the second installment to her serial memoirs, Furlong explores the challenges of beginning a new life in an unfamiliar environment and coming to terms with her trauma-filled past. Bonnet Strings: An Amish Woman’s Ties to Two Worlds (2014) is a more polished memoir, in which Furlong critically reflects on her first memoir, narrates her struggle to build interpersonal relationships as well as continues to forge of her own intersectional identities

Macrophage – cryptococcus interactions during cryptococcosis

The human fungal pathogens Cryptococcus neoformans and C. gattii cause life-threatening infections of the central nervous system. One of the major characteristics of cryptococcal disease is the ability of the pathogen to parasitise upon phagocytic effector cells. Cryptococcus can survive and proliferate within macrophages, and is also capable of escaping into the intracellular environment via a non-lytic mechanism (‘expulsion’) and can be transferred directly from one cell to another (lateral transfer). In the first part of this thesis, I demonstrate that enhanced Th2, but not Th1, cytokine levels lead to increased intracellular cryptococcal proliferation but lower levels of cryptococcal expulsion. In the second part, I describe the generation and characterisation of GFP-expressing derivates of two widely used cryptococcal strains: C. neoformans serotype A type strain H99 and C. gattii serotype B type strain R265. Furthermore, I have developed a method to effectively and rapidly investigate macrophage parasitism by flow cytometry that preserves the accuracy of current approaches but offers a four-fold improvement in speed. The final part dissects the regulation and induction of mitochondrial tubularisation in hypervirulent C. gattii strains and describes the first steps towards a comparative mitochondrial genome sequencing approach to identify the underlying molecular mechanisms

The Case of the Benin Bronzes: Exploring Repatriation in U.S. Museums

The Benin Bronzes are a grouping of an estimated 10,000 works made from brass, ivory, wood, clay, as well as other materials. These objects originated from the royal palace in Benin City, located in present day Nigeria in Africa. Within the last five years, beginning in 2017, discussions surrounding the repatriation of these artifacts from museums around the world have been reignited to a high degree where institutions are actively working towards researching and, in increasing numbers, repatriating the material to Nigeria. Through video and written interviews this thesis examines the thoughts and opinions of 11 professionals in museums across the United States about international repatriation efforts regarding the Benin Bronzes. The goal of this thesis is to understand what is currently occurring in the museum field. Through these interviews I was able to learn that 90% of my interviewees are actively researching their African collections and are open to returning them to the object’s country of origin if it was obtained unethically or illegally. This is a crucial time in history as people in diverse museums in the United States and Europe are working together to return the Benin Bronzes to Nigeria

Transcendental resistance: the new Americanists and Emerson\u27s challenge

About the Book Johannes Voelz offers a critique of the New Americanists through a stimulating and original reexamination of the iconic figure of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Voelz argues against the prevailing tendency among Americanists to see Emerson as the product of an “all-pervasive scope of cultural power.” Instead he shows Emerson’s philosophy to be a deft response to the requirements of lecturing professionally at the newly built lyceums around the country. Voelz brings to light a fascinating organic relationship between Emerson’s dynamic style of thinking and the uplifting experience demanded by his public. This need for an audience-directed philosophy, the author argues, reveals the function of Emerson’s infamous inconsistencies on such issues as representation, identity, and nation. It also poses a major counter-argument to the New Americanists’ dim view of Emerson’s individualism and his vision of the private man in public. Challenging the fundamental premises of the New Americanists, this study is an important, even pathbreaking guide to the future of American studies.
