Strategies for the control of Rhipicephalus microplus ticks in a world of conventional acaricide and macrocyclic lactone resistance

    Get PDF
Infestations with the cattle tick, Rhipicephalus microplus, constitute the most important ectoparasite problem for cattle production in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, resulting in major economic losses. The control of R. microplus is mostly based on the use of conventional acaricides and macrocyclic lactones. However, the intensive use of such compounds has resulted in tick populations that exhibit resistance to all major acaricide chemical classes. Consequently, there is a need for the development of alternative approaches, possibly including the use of animal husbandry practices, synergized pesticides, rotation of acaricides, pesticide mixture formulations, manual removal of ticks, selection for host resistance, nutritional management, release of sterile male hybrids, environmental management, plant species that are unfavourable to ticks, pasture management, plant extracts, essential oils and vaccination. Integrated tick management consists of the systematic combination of at least two control technologies aiming to reduce selection pressure in favour of acaricide-resistant individuals, while maintaining adequate levels of animal production. The purpose of this paper is to present a current review on conventional acaricide and macrocyclic lactone resistance for better understanding and control of resistant ticks with particular emphasis on R. microplus on cattle

Research on school climate has among its purposes to contribute to improving the quality of education, one of the main challenges of the Mexican educational system, particularly at the level of basic education. Our aim was to explore the relationships between the dimensions of school climate of perceived social the support teacher-student, support student-student and opportunities for autonomy and academic performance. The study was non-experimental and correlational. The sample consisted of 325 students from a middle school in northeastern Mexico, with a mean age of 13.4 years who responded to a scale of perceived school climate. The results show that students perceive great teacher support associated with student-student support and opportunities for autonomy. In addition, we found that academic achievement related to teacher support and opportunities for autonomy. These data are consistent with the country´s educational policy, which emphasizes the teacher´s role as facilitator of student learning to improve learning outcomes and the quality of education. This project is focused on finding a possible solution to the current problem; the disproportionate increase in population and high housing prices directly affect the living space in which we cohabit, making it increasingly smaller, forcing people to have to resort to making more use of the available spaces. The delimitation of spaces and their architectural reason must be understood, focusing on which are the tools that from Industrial Design allow to improve the space to be treated. Our firm seeks to intervene in these spaces in order to improve their storage and distribution. Designing multifunctional furniture that manages to meet the different needs of our users, in addition to generating greater utility of the elements, offering several functions in the same system without affecting its formal essence or its aesthetic appearance.Diseñador (a) IndustrialPregrad

Attenuation effects of prenatal stress by early postnatal stimulation in different research models

Prenatal stress alters the pattern of corticoid secretion and affects transplacentally the fetus hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) in different animal models. Early postnatal stimulation or handling results in an increase in maternal care to the offspring what reverts the effects of prenatal stress on the alterations produced in the HPA axis. In this revision article we describe and discuss the underlying mechanism present and discuss the mechanisms leading to causing imbalance produced by prenatal stress and how it is related to immune system disorders. The general effects that postnatal early stimulation have on the parameters altered by prenatal stress and the attenuation produced on prenatal stress immune system negative effects will also be discussed.Fil: Liaudat, Ana Cecilia. International audienceUsually, identification models of parallel robots are simplified and take only the dynamics of the moving platform into account. Moreover the input efforts are estimated through the use of the manfucaturer's actuator drive gains that are not calibrated thus leading to identification errors. In this paper a systematic way to derive the full dynamic identification model of the Orthoglide parallel robot in combination with a method that allows the identification of both robot inertial parameters and drive gains

Proceedings of the 5th International Symposium of Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intelligence (UCAMI 2011), December 5-8th, 2011, Riviera Maya, MexicoPredictions about users' next locations allow bringing forward their future context, thus having additional time to react. To make such predictions, algorithms capable of learning mobility patterns and estimating the next location are needed. This work is focused on making the predictions on mobile terminals, thus resource consumption being an important constraint. Among the predictors with low resource consumption, the family of LZ algorithms has been chosen to study their performance, analyzing the results drawn from processing location records of 95 users. The main contribution is to divide the algorithms into two phases, thus being possible to use the best combination to obtain better prediction accuracy or lower resource consumption.Proyecto CCG10-UC3M/TIC-4992 de la Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid y la Universidad Carlos III de Madri

Femtosecond two-photon absorption spectroscopy of poly(fluorene) derivatives containing benzoselenadiazole and benzothiadiazole

We have investigated the molecular structure and two-photon absorption (2PA) properties relationship of two push-pull poly(fluorene) derivatives containing benzoselenadiazole and benzothiadiazole units. For that, we have used the femtosecond wavelength-tunable Z-scan technique with a low repetition rate (1 kHz) and an energy per pulse on the order of nJ. Our results show that both 2PA spectra present a strong 2PA (around 600 GM (1 GM = 1×10-50 cm4 .s. photon-1)) band at around 720 nm (transition energy 3.45 eV) ascribed to the strongly 2PA-allowed 1Ag-like → mAg-like transition, characteristic of poly(fluorene) derivatives. Another 2PA band related to the intramolecular charge transfer was also observed at around 900 nm (transition energy 2.75 eV). In both 2PA bands, we found higher 2PA cross-section values for the poly(fluorene) containing benzothiadiazole unit. This outcome was explained through the higher charge redistribution at the excited state caused by the benzothiadiazole group as compared to the benzoselenadiazole and confirmed by means of solvatochromic Stokes shift measurements. To shed more light on these results, we employed the sum-over-states approach within the two-energy level model to estimate the maximum permanent dipole moment change related to the intramolecular charge transfer transition
