    An Applied Hardwood Value Recovery Study in the Appalachian Region of Virginia and West Virginia

    An analysis of log-making (bucking) performance for five logging crews in southern Appalachian mixed-hardwood stands of Virginia and West Virginia was conducted. Cutting accuracy and value recovery were analyzed and compared to an optimal solution that was determined through the use of the HW-BUCK computer software. In total 148 trees were bucked into 510 logs and only 11 percent were cut accurately. Fifteen percent were under cut and 74 percent were over length. The crew with the best performance in length cutting accuracy also recorded the lowest value recovery loss. An average value loss of 20.7 percent was calculated for all five crews

    Low multiplicity of infection in vivo results in purifying selection against baculovirus deletion mutants

    The in vivo fate of Autographa californica multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus deletion mutants originating from serial passage in cell culture was investigated by passaging a population enriched in these mutants in insect larvae. The infectivity of polyhedra and occlusion-derived virion content per polyhedron were restored within two passages in vivo. The frequency of occurrence of deletion mutants was determined by real-time PCR. The frequency of the non-homologous region origin (non-HR ori) of DNA replication was reduced to wild-type levels within two passages. The frequency of the polyhedrin gene did not increase and remained below wild-type levels. A low m.o.i. during the initial infection in insect larvae, causing strong purifying selection for autonomously replicating viruses, could explain these observations. The same virus population used in vivo was also passaged once at a different m.o.i. in cell culture.     Incidence and survival trends of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma in the Netherlands between 1989 and 2011

    SummaryBackgroundIncidence and survival trends of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) are essential knowledge for guiding policy making and research.MethodsThe total population of the Netherlands was studied covering 1989–2011. Two-and five-year survival and age-standardized incidence rates of HNSCC were assessed in relation to site, gender and age (15years-of-age categories).ResultsWe recorded a statistically significant increase of oral, oropharyngeal and hypopharyngeal carcinoma for males and females of all ages, varying from 0.6% (hypopharynx in males) to 2.7% (oropharynx in females) per year. The incidence of laryngeal carcinoma significantly decreased for males with 2.3% per year; for females the situation was stable. In young adults (below 45years of age) the incidence figures were different: significant decreasing incidence trends were seen for both genders for carcinomas of the oropharynx, hypopharynx and larynx. Regarding oral carcinoma, no change was observed for the young patient group, but for subsites trends were divergent. Carcinoma of the floor or mouth decreased for both genders, but carcinoma of the tongue rose by a significant 2.8% per year for young males. Five-year survival trends for all ages showed no change for laryngeal carcinoma, a small improvement for oral and hypopharyngeal carcinoma, and a substantial and significant improvement of survival from 36% to 47% survival over the total period for oropharyngeal carcinoma.ConclusionIn the Netherlands for the last two decades, the incidence of oral, oropharyngeal and hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma has increased and survival has improved. The incidence of laryngeal carcinoma has decreased in males, and remained unchanged in females; survival from laryngeal carcinoma has not changed

    Estimate of halo ellipticity as a function of radius with flexions

    The cold dark matter theory predicts triaxial dark matter haloes. The radial distribution of halo ellipticity depends on baryonic processes and the nature of dark matter particles (collisionless or collisional). Here we show that we can use lensing flexion ratios to measure the halo ellipticity as a function of radius. We introduce a weight function and study the relationship between the first and second order statistics of flexion ratios, both of which can be used to reduce the bias in the estimate of ellipticity. we perform numerical tests for our method, and demonstrate that it can reduce the bias and determine the halo ellipticity as a function of radius.     Relevance of unilateral and bilateral sexual polyploidization in relation to intergenomic recombination and introgression in Lilium species hybrids

    Sexual polyploids were induced in diploid (2n = 2x = 24) interspecific F1 hybrids of Longiflorum Ă— Asiatic (LA) and Oriental Ă— Asiatic (OA) Lilium hybrids by backcrossing to Asiatic (AA) parents as well as by sib-mating of the F1 LA hybrids. A majority of the BC1 progenies were triploid and the progenies from sib-mating were tetraploid or near tetraploids. Genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) technique was applied to assess the intergenomic recombination in the BC1 populations of LA and OA hybrids obtained after unilateral sexual polyploidization. A total of 63 LA (LA Ă— AA and AA Ă— LA) and 53 OA hybrids were analysed. LA hybrids were originated through the functioning of 2n gametes either as 2n eggs or 2n pollen while those of OA hybrids originated through functional 2n pollen of diploid OA genotype. In both type of crosses, a majority of the progenies had originated through First Division Restitution (FDR) mechanism of functional 2n gamete either with or without a cross over. However, there were nine LA- and four OA-genotypes where Indeterminate Meiotic Restitution (IMR) was the mechanism of 2n gamete formation. Based on GISH, total amount of introgression of Longiflorum and Oriental genome into Asiatic genome was determined. Most of the BC progenies exhibited recombination and the amount of recombination was higher in LA hybrids as compared to OA hybrids. Intergenomic recombination was also determined cytologically in the 16 plants of sib-mated LA hybrids where both parents had contributed 2n gametes. Based on these results the nature of interspecific lily hybrids obtained from uni- and bilateral sexual polyploidization leading to allotriploid and allotetraploid formation is discussed in the context of introgression and intergenomic recombinatio

    Dynamic modeling of three-phase upflow fixed-bed reactor including pore diffusion

    The dynamics of a three-phase upflow fixed-bed reactor are investigated using a non-isothermal heterogeneous model including gas–liquid and liquid–solid mass transfer and diffusion/reaction phenomena inside the catalyst. The partial differential and algebraic equations involving three integration variables (time and two space coordinates) are solved via discretization of the spatial coordinates coupled with the Gear method. For a multistep hydrogenation on a shell catalyst, the model exhibits significant effects of the external and above all internal resistance to hydrogen transfer but also non-trivial internal hydrocarbons concentration profiles. A simplified model is compared with the extended one and with experimental data in transient regime. In the investigated conditions—hydrocarbons in large excess—the diffusion of hydrocarbons appears to be actually not limiting, so that the simplest model predicts accurately the transient reactor behavior

    Associations of proactive coping and self-efficacy with psychosocial outcomes in individuals after stroke

    Objective: To examine the associations of proactive coping and self-efficacy with psychosocial outcomes in individuals after stroke. Design: Cross-sectional study. Regression analyses were performed. Setting: Outpatient settings of hospitals and rehabilitation centers. Participants: Individuals after stroke (N=112; mean age +/- SD, 57.1 +/- 8.9y; mean time +/- SD since stroke, 18.9 +/- 28.5mo). Interventions: Not applicable. Main Outcome Measures: Proactive coping was measured using the Utrecht Proactive Coping Competence scale (UPCC), and self-efficacy was measured using the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES). Psychosocial outcomes were measured as (1) participation with the use of the restriction and satisfaction subscales of the Utrecht Scale for Evaluation of Rehabilitation-Participation (USER-Participation); (2) emotional problems with the use of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS); (3) life satisfaction with the use of 2 questions (2LS); and (4) health-related quality of life (HRQOL) with the use of the Short Stroke-Specific Quality of Life scale (SS-QOL-12). Results: Higher UPCC scores were associated with lower HADS scores (beta=-.55, P.0025). Conclusions: Proactive coping and self-efficacy have different associations with each of the psychosocial outcomes.     Biobased polymers and materials are desperately needed to replace fossil-based materials in the world’s transition to a more sustainable lifestyle. In this article, Avantium describes the path from invention towards commercialization of their YXY(®) plants-to-plastics Technology, which catalytically converts plant-based sugars into FDCA—the chemical building block for PEF (polyethylene furanoate). PEF is a plant-based, highly recyclable plastic, with superior performance properties compared to today’s widely used petroleum-based packaging materials. The myriad of topics that must be addressed in the process of bringing a new monomer and polymer to market are discussed, including process development and application development, regulatory requirements, IP protection, commercial partnerships, by-product valorisation, life cycle assessment (LCA), recyclability and circular economy fit, and end-of-life. Advice is provided for others considering embarking on a similar journey, as well as an outlook on the next, exciting steps towards large-scale production of FDCA and PEF at Avantium’s Flagship Plant and beyond
