    Sull'identità dell'architettura italiana tra Teoria e Città

    Get PDF

The architectural project as a link between theory and practice

    Get PDF
The paper aims to investigate the theme of the Call, the distinction between theory and practice, based on a reflection on Architecture and demonstrating that one of the specifics of this art of construction – or artistic practice as in the well-known definition by Vittorio Gregotti – is in the relationship between thought and artefact intended not in antithetic terms but of hermeneutic circularity. The investigation of points of view and the analysis of exempla are, respectively, premise and demonstration of a reasoning that aims to define, specifically referring to methods and techniques within a theory of architectural design, an “orientated point of view” starting from which a reflection on the relationship between theory and practice is proposed.

A rare case of endometriosis in Turner's syndrome

Endometriosis is defined by the presence of functional endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity and musculature. It has a prevalence rate as high as 35e50% in women experiencing pain or infertility [1] and sometimes has a peculiar and rare onset [2,3]. Endometriosis is a common disease in menstruating women [4,5] but has also been reported in postmenopausal or surgically castrated women on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) [6]. The common denominator of all such cases is exposure to female hormones [7]. However, endometriosis, a common and important clinical problem in women of reproductive age, has rarely been described in prepubertal girls. In patients with Turner's syndrome or other ovarian dysgenesis, endometriosis is very rare. Some cases are subclinical, and endometriosis is an incidental finding during routine examination. Although endometriosis was described in the medical literature at the end of the 19th century, and the first theories regarding its hystogenesis were developed at the beginning of the 20th century, the real pathogenesis of endometriosis remains unknown. Most studies about the etiology of endometriosis claim that the main possible causes of endometriosis are probably multifactorial. Three theories of histogenesis have been proposed. (1) The metastatic theory [8] proposes the transplantation of endometrial tissue via retrograde menstrual implantation, vascular/lymphatic spread, and intraoperative implantation. (2) The coelomic metaplastic theory [9] suggests that the germinal epithelium of the ovary can be transformed by metaplasia into endometrium. This theory, which initially explained only ovarian endometriosis, has since been extended to the peritoneal serosa, as embryologic studies have indicated that Mullerian ducts, th

Stocking Density Affects Welfare Indicators in Horses Reared for Meat Production

Horses kept for meat production are reared in intensive breeding farms. We employed a checklist adapted from the Animal Welfare Indicators (AWIN) assessment protocol. Our evaluation aims to assess whether welfare indicators are influenced by stocking densities (m2/horse) and feeding strategies applied. An analysis was carried out on the data obtained from 7 surveys conducted at a single horse farm designed for meat production. In each survey, the same 12 pens were assessed, but on each occasion, the horses in the pens had been changed as had the stocking densities. Briefly, 561 horses aged 16 ± 8 months (mean ± standard deviation) were evaluated. Two stocking density cut-off values (median and 75th percentile: 3.95 and 4.75 m2/horse, respectively) were applied to investigate the effect of stocking density on horse welfare. Data were analysed using Mann–Whitney U and Fisher’s exact tests (p < 0.05). When cut-off was set as the median percentile, lower stocking density was associated with improvements in body condition score (BCS), coat cleanliness and bedding quantity, less coughing, less resting in a standing position, and less feeding related to the greater space available at the feed bunk. When the 75th percentile cut-off was used, indicators that improved were coat cleanliness, bedding quantity and mane and tail condition, as well as less resting in standing position and less feeding related to the greater space available at the feed bunk. Accordingly, the use of two different stocking density cut-off values showed that the increase of space allowance affected specific welfare indicators. Further increment of space and/or changes in management regimes should be investigated to improve all the indicators. Moreover, results related to feeding indicated the need to intervene as starch intakes exceeded recommended safe levels, negatively affecting horse welfare

    Emergency contraception: an updated review

    Get PDF
Emergency contraception is a common practice now. Many categories of drugs are marketed with modifications in dosage, in combination and even in the timing of administration. Recent re-analysis suggests that there is still no uniformity of opinion on the actual mechanism of action and this has often fueled the ethical controversy. This review analyzes the most common emergency contraception drugs: levonorgestrel, mifepristone and ulipristal acetate about their action underlining that the hormonal products, when used in emergency contraception, play different roles depending on the phase of the menstrual cycle during which they are administered. This review aims to examine rigorously the most accredited literature to verify if a evidence-based uniformity of opinions has been achieved about the biological effects of hormones administered after the sexual intercourse

Brain magnetic resonance findings in 117 children with autism spectrum disorder under 5 years old.

    Get PDF
We examined the potential benefits of neuroimaging measurements across the first 5 years of life in detecting early comorbid or etiological signs of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In particular, we analyzed the prevalence of neuroradiologic findings in routine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of a group of 117 ASD children younger than 5 years old. These data were compared to those reported in typically developing (TD) children. MRI findings in children with ASD were analyzed in relation to their cognitive level, severity of autistic symptoms, and the presence of electroencephalogram (EEG) abnormalities. The MRI was rated abnormal in 55% of children with ASD with a significant prevalence in the high-functioning subgroup compared to TD children. We report significant incidental findings of mega cisterna magna, ventricular anomalies and abnormal white matter signal intensity in ASD without significant associations between these MRI findings and EEG features. Based on these results we discuss the role that brain MRI may play in the diagnostic procedure of ASD
