    The Perceptions of Wearable Accessory Designers in Applying 3D Printing Technology

    The Maker Movement has ushered in new ways of creating, such as three-dimensional printing (3DP), which has led to mass customization rather than mere consumption. Due to this transition in manufacturing and the limitation on literature regarding designer\u27s use of 3DP technology, this study explores the perceptions of wearable accessory designers\u27 experiences using 3DP. Sixteen participants were recruited from Australia, Asia, Europe, and North America on a 3DP e-commerce platform. Overall, the interview data indicated that participants emphasized the ease of using 3DP over traditional jewelry-making techniques. The participants further described their preferences for Rhino 3D, and plastic materials (e.g., ABS and PLA). Other key findings included participants\u27 perspectives on the ease of ring design over necklaces for 3DP, the ease of entering the field of 3DP, and the future need for improved quality 3DP printers.     Socio-Cognitive Assessment of Physicians\u27 Engagement with Electronic Medical Records (EMR): A Pre-EMR Implementation Study in Developing Countries

    This study assesses physicians’ intention to engage with electronic medical records (EMR) in the context of pre-EMR implementation in developing countries. We developed a model and corresponding hypotheses grounded in the sociocognitive theory and the decomposed theory of planned behavior. A survey of physicians in the Middle-East was conducted and the results empirically analyzed via PLS. We find that, in developing countries, in pre-EMR implementation stages, the critical predictors of intention to engage with complex technologies such as EMR are physicians’ perceptions of computer self-efficacy, technology support, and effort expectations. Performance expectations and social influences did not have a significant impact on intention to use EMR. Theoretical and practical implications of this research are discussed

    Learning in a Multidisciplinary Collaboration: A Case Study of Digital Textile Co-design for Apparel and Interior Designers

    As a wide range of emerging technologies becomes more relevant in recent years, designers today are faced with learning more untraditional knowledge and skillsets, and the challenge of complex problem solving is often more effective through multi- and/or interdisciplinary collaborations. In a collaborative design environment, the transfer of information or ideas is essential to the development of the design process and outcome. Data were collected from a collaborative design project between apparel and an interior design studio class in a southeastern US institution. The study results suggest that apparel design students experience both challenges and benefits in co-designing with interior design students. Results also reflect the effectiveness of digital 3D visualization tools (Optitex) in achieving a rewarding co-design experience in engineered print design

    Spectroscopic and multivariate data-based method to assess the metabolomic fingerprint of Mediterranean plants

    Introduction: Most secondary metabolites from plants have a prominent defensive role and repellency against predators and microbial pathogens. These properties largely vary among plant species and offer potential applications as biologically active compounds in medicine as well in agriculture. Objectives: We propose a new procedure that combine different spectroscopic techniques and multivariate data analysis to determine the chemical composition and the relative amounts of each metabolites and/or each class of organic compounds. The approach was used for a rapid identification of secondary metabolites from leaf and root of eight Mediterranean plants species. Methodology: The polar and the apolar extracts of two leaves and roots of each plant were analysed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC–MS), respectively. Multivariate data analysis was used for a faster interpretation of data. Results: The metabolic fingerprint of the Mediterranean plants, Acanthus mollis, Dittrichia viscosa, Festuca drymeja, Fraxinus ornus, Fagus sylvatica, Hedera helix, Quercus ilex, and Typha latifolia, showed a complex chemical composition, being specific for each species and plant tissue. Two alditols, mannitol and quercitol, were found in manna ash (Fraxinus ornus) and holm oak (Q. ilex) polar leaf extracts, respectively. The highest levels of aromatic compounds were found in D. viscosa and T. latifolia. Fatty acids were the predominant class of compounds in all apolar extracts under investigation. Triterpene were almost exclusively found in roots, except for holm oak, where they constitute 58% of total extract. Steroids were widespread in leaf extracts. Conclusion: The major advantages of the proposed approach are versatility and rapidity, thus making it suitable for a fast comparison among species and plant tissue types.</p

    UnlabelledPairing high-throughput sequencing technologies with high-throughput mutagenesis enables genome-wide investigations of pathogenic organisms. Knowledge of the specific functions of protein domains encoded by the genome of the hepatitis C virus (HCV), a major human pathogen that contributes to liver disease worldwide, remains limited to insight from small-scale studies. To enhance the capabilities of HCV researchers, we have obtained a high-resolution functional map of the entire viral genome by combining transposon-based insertional mutagenesis with next-generation sequencing. We generated a library of 8,398 mutagenized HCV clones, each containing one 15-nucleotide sequence inserted at a unique genomic position. We passaged this library in hepatic cells, recovered virus pools, and simultaneously assayed the abundance of mutant viruses in each pool by next-generation sequencing. To illustrate the validity of the functional profile, we compared the genetic footprints of viral proteins with previously solved protein structures. Moreover, we show the utility of these genetic footprints in the identification of candidate regions for epitope tag insertion. In a second application, we screened the genetic footprints for phenotypes that reflected defects in later steps of the viral life cycle. We confirmed that viruses with insertions in a region of the nonstructural protein NS4B had a defect in infectivity while maintaining genome replication. Overall, our genome-wide HCV mutant library and the genetic footprints obtained by high-resolution profiling represent valuable new resources for the research community that can direct the attention of investigators toward unidentified roles of individual protein domains.ImportanceOur insertional mutagenesis library provides a resource that illustrates the effects of relatively small insertions on local protein structure and HCV viability. We have also generated complementary resources, including a website (http://hangfei.bol.ucla.edu) and a panel of epitope-tagged mutant viruses that should enhance the research capabilities of investigators studying HCV. Researchers can now detect epitope-tagged viral proteins by established antibodies, which will allow biochemical studies of HCV proteins for which antibodies are not readily available. Furthermore, researchers can now quickly look up genotype-phenotype relationships and base further mechanistic studies on the residue-by-residue information from the functional profile. More broadly, this approach offers a general strategy for the systematic functional characterization of viruses on the genome scale

    The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Care Delivery and Quality of Life in Lung Cancer Surgery

    Background The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (COVID-19) pandemic and associated restrictions have altered the delivery of surgical care. The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of COVID-19 on care delivery and quality of life (QOL) from the perspectives of lung cancer surgery patients, family caregivers (FCGs), and thoracic surgery teams. Methods Patients/FCGs enrolled in a randomized trial of a self-management intervention for lung cancer surgery preparation/recovery were invited to participate in this qualitative study. Patients/FCGs data were collected separately 1-month postdischarge. Interviews were also conducted with thoracic surgery team members. Content analysis approaches were used to develop themes. Results Forty-one respondents including 19 patients, 18 FCGs, three thoracic surgeons, and one nurse practitioner participated in the study. Patient themes included isolation, psychological distress, delayed/impacted care, and financial impact. FCGs themes included caregiving challenges, worry about COVID-19, financial hardship, isolation, and physical activity limitations. Surgical team themes included witnessing patient/FCG\u27s distress, challenges with telehealth, communication/educational challenges, and delays in treatment. Conclusions COVID-19 had a varied impact on care delivery and QOL for lung cancer surgery dyads. Some dyads reported minimal impact, while others experienced added psychological distress, isolation, and caregiving challenges. Surgical teams also experienced challenges in the approach used to provide care

    NASA's Black Marble Product Suite: Validation Strategy

    NASA's Black Marble nighttime lights product suite (VNP46) is available at 500m resolution since January 2012 with data fro the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Day/Night Band (DNB) onboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Platform (SNPP). The retrieval algorithm, developed and implemented for routine global processing at NASA's Land Science Investigator-led Processing System (SIPS), utilizes all high-quality, cloud-free, atmospheric-terrain, vegetation, snow, lunar and stray light corrected radiances to estimate daily nighttime lights (NTL) and other intrinsic surface optical properties. Extensive benchmark tests at representative spatial and temporal scales were conducted on the VNP46 time series record to characterize the uncertainties stemming from upstream data sources. Current and planned validation activities under the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Human Planet Initiative are aimed at evaluating the products at difference geographic locations and time periods representing the full range of retrieval conditions

    Social Determinants of Health Among Family Caregiver Centered Outcomes in Lung Cancer: A Systematic Review

    Background: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death globally. Both lung cancer patients and family caregivers (FCGs) have unmet quality of life (QOL) needs. An understudied topic in lung cancer research is the role of social determinants of health (SDOH) on QOL outcomes for this population. The purpose of this review was to explore the state of research on SDOH FCGs centered outcomes in lung cancer. Methods: The databases PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and American Psychological Association (APA) PsycInfo were searched for peer-reviewed manuscripts evaluating defined SDOH domains on FCGs published within the last ten years. The information extracted using Covidence included patients, FCGs and study characteristics. Level of evidence and quality of articles were assessed using the Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Rating Scale. Results: Of the 344 full-text articles assessed, 19 were included in this review. The social and community context domain focused on caregiving stressors and interventions to reduce its effects. The health care access and quality domain showed barriers and underuse of psychosocial resources. The economic stability domain indicated marked economic burdens for FCGs. Four interconnected themes emerged among articles on the influence of SDOH on FCG-centered outcomes in lung cancer: (I) psychological well-being, (II) overall quality of life, (III) relationship quality, and (IV) economic hardship. Notably, most participants in the studies were White females. The tools used to measure SDOH factors included primarily demographic variables. Conclusions: Current studies provide evidence on the role of SDOH factors on lung cancer FCGs’ QOL. Expanded utilization of validated SDOH measures in future studies would provide greater consistency in data, that could in turn inform interventions to improve QOL. Further research focusing on the domains of education quality and access and neighborhood and built environment should be carried out to bridge gaps in knowledge

    Social determinants of health and lung cancer surgery: a qualitative study

    IntroductionSocial determinants of health (SDOH) are non-clinical factors that may affect the outcomes of cancer patients. The purpose of this study was to describe the influence of SDOH factors on quality of life (QOL)-related outcomes for lung cancer surgery patients.MethodsThirteen patients enrolled in a randomized trial of a dyadic self-management intervention were invited and agreed to participate in semi-structured key informant interviews at study completion (3 months post-discharge). A conventional content analysis approach was used to identify codes and themes that were derived from the interviews. Independent investigators coded the qualitative data, which were subsequently confirmed by a second group of independent investigators. Themes were finalized, and discrepancies were reviewed and resolved.ResultsSix themes, each with several subthemes, emerged. Overall, most participants were knowledgeable about the concept of SDOH and perceived that provider awareness of SDOH information was important for the delivery of comprehensive care in surgery. Some participants described financial challenges during treatment that were exacerbated by their cancer diagnosis and resulted in stress and poor QOL. The perceived impact of education varied and included its importance in navigating the healthcare system, decision-making on health behaviors, and more economic mobility opportunities. Some participants experienced barriers to accessing healthcare due to insurance coverage, travel burden, and the fear of losing quality insurance coverage due to retirement. Neighborhood and built environment factors such as safety, air quality, access to green space, and other environmental factors were perceived as important to QOL. Social support through families/friends and spiritual/religious communities was perceived as important to postoperative recovery.DiscussionAmong lung cancer surgery patients, SDOH factors can impact QOL and the patient’s survivorship journey. Importantly, SDOH should be assessed routinely to identify patients with unmet needs across the five domains. SDOH-driven interventions are needed to address these unmet needs and to improve the QOL and quality of care for lung cancer surgery patients
