We would like to share a possible comprehention concluded of what Otloh Saint Emmeram, Benedictine monk of the 11th century, should thought of a reading of the piece Farsalia de Lucano. Therefore, the selection we did of the only work of the poet we could reach. it’s arbitrary and focused on the issues that pertubed Otloh. The relations we stablished for the same arbitrariness, in relation to the course of our conjecture

This article carries out a reflective analysis, taking as a basis the conceptualizations of Miranda Fricker, and emphasising the place and condition granted in intellectual history to various women in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. It revaluates several female thinkers who have generated various types of philosophical production of which documentation survives for study, and thus re-stores them from the oblivion. They have been subjected to in the implementation of interrelated systems of oppression in traditions. In this sense, the article presents a review of the usual parame-ters of philosophical education that has contributed to its forgetfulness and/or denial. The purpose of this review is to promote the development of a broader and more comprehensive understanding of the multiple forms of life and thought in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages

The work associated with repetitive efforts and inadequate resting periods, strong physical exertion, awkward postures or static positioning exposes workers to the risk of cumulative trauma disorders of the upper limbs. These risk factors are present in many agricultural activities. A study was carried out among workers on an agricultural farm. The workers\u27 histories were taken and they were given periodical medical check-ups. The presence of upper limb disorders was shown in a group of workers. A sample of 42 people was selected for the study by means of specific tests: electromyography, ultrasonography and laser-doppler ftowmetry. The tests showed a high incidence of carpal tunnel syndrome and microcirculation disorders. The study confirmed that electromyography, ultrasonography and/or laser-doppler flowmetry are highly useful tools for identifying cumulative trauma disorders.

The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted health care systems all over the world. Elective surgical procedures have been postponed and/or cancelled. Consensus is, therefore, required related to the factors that need to be in place before elective surgery, including hip and knee replacement surgery, which is restarted. Entirely new pathways and protocols need to be worked out. Methods A panel of experts from the European Hip Society and European Knee Association have agreed to a consensus statement on how to reintroduce elective arthroplasty surgery safely. The recommendations are based on the best available evidence and have been validated in a separate survey. Results The guidelines are based on five themes: modification and/or reorganisation of hospital wards. Restrictions on orthopaedic wards and in operation suite(s). Additional disinfection of the environment. The role of ultra-clean operation theatres. Personal protective equipment enhancement. Conclusion Apart from the following national and local guidance, protocols need to be put in place in the patient pathway for primary arthroplasty to allow for a safe retur

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the health care system around the entire globe. A consensus is needed about resuming total hip and knee procedures. The European Hip Society (EHS) and the European Knee Association (EKA) formed a panel of experts that have produced a consensus statement on how the safe re-introduction of elective hip and knee arthroplasty should be undertaken. Methods A prospective online survey was done among members of EHS and EKA. The survey consisted of 27 questions. It includes basic information on demographics and details the participant’s agreement with each recommendation. The participant could choose among three options (agree, disagree, abstain). Recommendations focussed on pre-operative, perioperative, and post-operative handling of patients and precautions. Results A total of 681 arthroplasty surgeons participated in the survey, with 479 fully completing the survey. The participants were from 44 countries and 6 continents. Apart from adhering to National and Local Guidelines, the recommendations concerned how to make elective arthroplasty safe for patients and staf. Conclusion The survey has shown good-to-excellent agreement of the participants with regards to the statements made in the recommendations for the safe return to elective arthroplasty following the frst wave of the COVID-19 pandemi

Acceptability of Male Circumcision for the Prevention of HIV/AIDS in the Dominican Republic

Male circumcision (MC) is an effective strategy to prevent HIV infection in heterosexual men. To our knowledge, there are no studies of the acceptability of this procedure in the Dominican Republic (DR). The main objective of this study was to assess the acceptability of MC to prevent HIV transmission among men ages 18 to 50 years in the Altagracia Province in the Dominican Republic. Because differences in culture and beliefs between Haitians and Dominicans could potentially influence their acceptability of MC, we conducted a comparative analysis based on national origin.A survey was administered to a convenience sample of 368 men. The questionnaire was divided in 3 sections: 1) Background demographics (including national origin), 2) Male circumcision and 3) Sexual health. Stratified and logistic multivariate regression analyses were performed to identify factors associated with the acceptability of MC.The sample consisted of 238 (65%) Dominicans and 130 (35%) Haitian immigrants. Almost all participants were uncircumcised (95%) and about half (52%) were single. The overall acceptability of MC was 29%. The number of men willing to be circumcised increased to 67% after an information session explaining the benefits of the procedure. 74% of men reported that they would be willing to circumcise their sons after hearing that information. In multivariate analysis, Haitian nationality (OR=1.86, 95% CI 1.01-3.41), knowing that circumcision improves hygiene (OR=2.78, 95% CI 1.29-6.0) and not believing that circumcision decreases sexual pleasure (OR=2.18, 95% CI 1.20-3.94) were associated with a higher acceptability of the procedure. Although age was not significantly associated with the willingness to be circumcised in the multivariate analysis, stratified analysis based on national origin suggested that younger Dominicans (<30 years of age) are more likely to accept the procedure when compared to their older counterparts (OR=2.17, 95% CI 1.14-4.12).An important number of sexually active men in the DR may be willing to be circumcised if educational resources detailing the benefits of the procedure are made available. These educational activities would constitute a great opportunity to teach about sexual health and reinforce safe sex practices

Prevalence and follow-up of occult HCV infection in an Italian population free of clinically detectable infectious liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Occult hepatitis C virus infection (OCI) is a recently described phenomenon characterized by undetectable levels of HCV-RNA in serum/plasma by current laboratory assays, with identifiable levels in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and/or liver tissue by molecular tests with enhanced sensitivity. Previous results from our group showed an OCI prevalence of 3.3% in a population unselected for hepatic disease. The present study aimed to evaluate OCI prevalence in a larger cohort of infectious liver disease-free (ILDF) subjects. Clinical follow-up of OCI subjects was performed to investigate the natural history of the infection. METHODS AND FINDINGS: 439 subjects referred to a Turin Blood Bank for phlebotomy therapy were recruited. They included 314 ILDF subjects, 40 HCV-positive subjects and 85 HBV-positive subjects, of whom 7 were active HBV carriers. Six subjects (4/314 ILDF subjects [1.27%] and 2/7 active HBV carriers [28%]) were positive for HCV-RNA in PBMCs, but negative for serological and virological markers of HCV, indicating OCI. HCV genotypes were determined in the PBMCs of 3/6 OCI subjects two had type 1b; the other had type 2a/2c. OCI subjects were followed up for at least 2 years. After 12 months only one OCI persisted, showing a low HCV viral load (3.73×10(1) UI/ml). By the end of follow-up all OCI subjects were negative for HCV. No seroconversion, alteration of liver enzyme levels, or reduction of liver synthesis occurred during follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated the existence of OCI in ILDF subjects, and suggested a high OCI prevalence among active HBV carriers. Follow-up suggested that OCI could be transient, with a trend toward the decrease of HCV viral load to levels undetectable by conventional methods after 12-18 months. Confirmation studies with a longer follow-up period are needed for identification of the OCI clearance or recurrence rates, and to characterize the viruses involved

Anticipating Tomorrow: Tailoring Parkinson's Symptomatic Therapy Using Predictors of Outcome

    Get PDF
Background: Although research into Parkinson's disease (PD) subtypes and outcome predictions has continued to advance, recommendations for using outcome prediction to guide current treatment decisions remain sparse. Objectives: To provide expert opinion‐based recommendations for individually tailored PD symptomatic treatment based on knowledge of risk prediction and subtypes. Methods: Using a modified Delphi approach, members of the Movement Disorders Society (MDS) Task Force on PD subtypes generated a series of general recommendations around the question: “Using what you know about genetic/biological/clinical subtypes (or any individual‐level predictors of outcome), what advice would you give for selecting symptomatic treatments for an individual patient now, based on what their subtype or individual characteristics predict about their future disease course?” After four iterations and revisions, those recommendations with over 75% endorsement were adopted. Results: A total of 19 recommendations were endorsed by a group of 13 panelists. The recommendations primarily centered around two themes: (1) incorporating future risk of cognitive impairment into current treatment plans; and (2) identifying future symptom clusters that might be forestalled with a single medication. Conclusions: These recommendations provide clinicians with a framework for integrating future outcomes into patient‐specific treatment choices. They are not prescriptive guidelines, but adaptable suggestions, which should be tailored to each individual. They are to be considered as a first step of a process that will continue to evolve as additional stakeholders provide new insights and as new information becomes available. As individualized risk prediction advances, the path to better tailored treatment regimens will become clearer
