    Oral Health in Migrants: An Observational Study on the Oral Health Status of a Migrant Cohort Coming from Middle-and Low-Income Countries

    Introduction. The oral health conditions of migrants coming from middle-and low-income countries to developed countries have been shown to be poorer than those of the host population. Since the phenomenon of migration has continued to grow over the past five decades, the oral health status of migrant populations should be an issue of great concern. Objectives. The objective of our observational study was to analyse the periodontal health status and the prevalence of dental caries and lesions of the oral mucosa in a migrant cohort resident in Italy, assessing the association between the oral health status and the educational level of the included patients. Materials and Methods. Our research was conducted at the dental department of Policlinico Tor Vergata (Rome, Italy). A sample of 200 migrants coming from middle-and low-income countries, aged between 3 and 37, was included in our study. Each patient underwent a physical examination of the oral cavity, recording the DMFT/dmft index, Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPI), and lesions of the oral mucosa. The one-way ANOVA test was used to establish the correlation between the oral health status and the educational level of the participants. Results. Many participants (62.5%) showed a DMFT/dmft Index ≥ 4; only 27% of the migrants had a DMFT/dmft Index lower than 4, and only 21 of them (10.5%) were recorded at 0. A CPI equal to 0 or 1 was observed in 131 patients (65.5%), while only 30 participants presented a CPI equal to or higher than 4 (15%), and 19.5% (39 patients) were assigned to code 2 and 3. Significant statistical differences were found in the CPI after adjusting data for the educational level of the included participants (p-value < 0.01). Conclusions. The data obtained in our research highlighted poor oral conditions among the analysed migrant population, recording a high prevalence of dental caries and inadequate oral hygiene habits

    The Multiple Roles of CD147 in the Development and Progression of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: An Overview

    Cluster of differentiation (CD)147, also termed extracellular matrix metalloprotease inducer or basigin, is a glycoprotein ubiquitously expressed throughout the human body, the oral cavity included. CD147 actively participates in physiological tissue development or growth and has important roles in reactive processes such as inflammation, immunity, and tissue repair. It is worth noting that deregulated expression and/or activity of CD147 is observed in chronic inflammatory or degenerative diseases, as well as in neoplasms. Among the latter, oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is characterized by an upregulation of CD147 in both the neoplastic and normal cells constituting the tumor mass. Most interestingly, the expression and/or activity of CD147 gradually increase as healthy oral mucosa becomes inflamed; hyperplastic/dysplastic lesions are then set on, and, eventually, OSCC develops. Based on these findings, here we summarize published studies which evaluate whether CD147 could be employed as a marker to monitor OSCC development and progression. Moreover, we describe CD147-promoted cellular and molecular events which are relevant to oral carcinogenesis, with the aim to provide useful information for assessing whether CD147 may be the target of novel therapeutic approaches directed against OSCC

    Sperm quality improvement after natural anti-oxidant treatment of asthenoteratospermic men with leukocytospermia

    Aim: To study the immune-modulating and anti-oxidant effects of beta-glucan, papaya, lactoferrin, and vitamins C and E on sperm characteristics of patients with asthenoteratozoospermia associated with leucocytosis. Methods: Fifty-one patients referred to our Sterility Center for semen analysis were selected. Sperm parameters were assessed before and after patient's treatment with beta-glucan, lactoferrin, papaya, and vitamins C and E. DNA damage was assessed by the acridine orange test and sperm structural characteristics were evaluated by transmission electron microscopy. Results: After 90 days of treatment, an increase in the percentage of morphologically normal sperm (17.0 ± 5.2 vs. 29.8 ± 6.5) and total progressive motility (19.0 ± 7.8 vs. 34.8 ± 6.8) were detected. Structural sperm characteristics as well as chromatin integrity were also improved after treatment. In terms of leukocyte concentration in seminal fluid, a significant reduction was recorded (2.2 ± 0.9 vs. 0.9 ± 0.2). Conclusion: The treatment of an inflammatory process by the synergic action of immune modulators and anti-oxidants could protect sperm during maturation and migration, leading to improved sperm function

    DNA Damage Response Gene Signature as Potential Treatment Markers for Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

    Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a rapidly progressive cancer that often develops resistance against DNA damage inducers, such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy, which are still the standard of care regimens for this tumor. Thus, the identification of biomarkers capable of monitoring the clinical progression of OSCC and its responsiveness to therapy is strongly required. To meet this need, here we have employed Whole Genome Sequencing and RNA-seq data from a cohort of 316 patients retrieved from the TCGA Pan-Cancer Atlas to analyze the genomic and transcriptomic status of the DNA damage response (DDR) genes in OSCC. Then, we correlated the transcriptomic data with the clinical parameters of each patient. Finally, we relied on transcriptomic and drug sensitivity data from the CTRP v2 portal, performing Pearson's correlation analysis to identify putative vulnerabilities of OSCC cell lines correlated with DDR gene expression. Our results indicate that several DDR genes show a high frequency of genomic and transcriptomic alterations and that the expression of some of them correlates with OSCC grading and infection by the human papilloma virus. In addition, we have identified a signature of eight DDR genes (namely CCNB1, CCNB2, CDK2, CDK4, CHECK1, E2F1, FANCD2, and PRKDC) that could be predictive for OSCC response to the novel antitumor compounds sorafenib and tipifarnib-P1. Altogether, our data demonstrate that alterations in DDR genes could have an impact on the biology of OSCC. Moreover, here we propose a DDR gene signature whose expression could be predictive of OSCC responsiveness to therapy

    The micro-laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (µ-LIBS) technique allows performing fast elemental analyses, without sample preparation and thus making it specifically useful in the analysis of the composition of ancient potsherd. The µ-LIBS instrument is equipped with a microscope and a scanning system allowing to realize small craters (about Ø = 25 µm) in order to obtain detailed hyperspectral surfaces maps (up to a maximum size of one square centimeter).     Micro-chemical evaluation of ancient potsherds by μ-LIBS scanning on thin section negatives

    In the study of ancient pottery, thin section analysis represents the basic approach to study mineralogical and petrografic features in order to obtain preliminary information about the production technology and origin of archaeological ceramics. However, even if thin section analysis allows investigating the textural and structural characteristics of potteries, peculiar features related to clay paste and temper composition, as well as provenance issues, can be detailed addressed only by quantitative mineralogical and chemical studies. In the realization of thin sections, a negative face is always produced, similar to the thin section itself; these remains can be used for additional analyses, such as high spatial resolution micro-chemical studies using, for example, a micro-laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) scanner. LIBS is a spectroscopic technique that, exploiting the laser radiation, is able to bring into the plasma state micrometric portions of the sample, and to analyse its content through the study of the optical emission of the plasma itself. Unlike other techniques, LIBS can detect and quantify also light elements such as aluminium and magnesium. Images produced by the micro-LIBS instrument show the spatial distribution of the chemical elements within a portion of the sample, which may have dimensions from a few hundred microns up to several centimeters. The combination of these images with algorithms derived from image processing techniques may return interesting information and supporting data to in-depth investigate pottery components detected by optical microscopy observations. In this work, we present the results of an experimental study performed on thin-section negatives with different grain size, surface treatments and aggregates, coming from some Neolithic Italian sites, exploring the potential of the LIBS method in micro-chemical studies of ancient potsherds

    Multivariate calibration in Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy quantitative analysis: The dangers of a ‘black box’ approach and how to avoid them

    The introduction of multivariate calibration curve approach in Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) quantitative analysis has led to a general improvement of the LIBS analytical performances, since a multivariate approach allows to exploit the redundancy of elemental information that are typically present in a LIBS spectrum. Software packages implementing multivariate methods are available in the most diffused commercial and open source analytical programs; in most of the cases, the multivariate algorithms are robust against noise and operate in unsupervised mode. The reverse of the coin of the availability and ease of use of such packages is the (perceived) difficulty in assessing the reliability of the results obtained which often leads to the consideration of the multivariate algorithms as ‘black boxes’ whose inner mechanism is supposed to remain hidden to the user. In this paper, we will discuss the dangers of a ‘black box’ approach in LIBS multivariate analysis, and will discuss how to overcome them using the chemical-physical knowledge that is at the base of any LIBS quantitative analysis

    Portrait of an artist at work: exploring Max Ernst's surrealist techniques

    AbstractMax Ernst was one of the most influential artists associated with both the Dada and Surrealist movements. However, until now, only few scientific studies have been devoted to his works. This paper presents the results of a multi-analytical investigation on six oil paintings, made between 1927 and 1942, belonging to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice (Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, New York). Through a combined art historical and scientific approach, this study aims at understanding Ernst's painting techniques, including frottage, grattage, dripping, and decalcomania, the used materials, and the state of conservation of the artworks. Non-invasive in situ investigations were performed by means of Vis–NIR multi-spectral imaging, X-ray fluorescence, external reflection FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. Imaging analysis revealed important information about Ernst's painting methods while the other techniques provided useful information about the ground layer, the painting materials and the presence of alteration products. Ernst's palette discloses great freedom in his use of materials and evolution during the time. This investigation demonstrates that an integrated, non-invasive, diagnostic approach provides a thorough analysis of materials and execution techniques of Ernst' masterworks allowing an in-depth knowledge of his highly skilled work

    A ruptured gastrointestinal stromal tumour of the small intestine: a case report

    The management of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumours (GISTs) has evolved rapidly since imatinib was introduced. Surgery remains the first-line treatment for localised, primary GIST, but the risk for local or metastatic relapse of disease is very high. Prognostic assessment is a critical part of developing a treatment strategy. Perforation or rupture of a GIST to the abdominal cavity has a very high risk for recurrence. We described the case of a 51-year-old man with a haemoperitoneum caused by a ruptured primary GIST of the small intestine. After complete surgical resection, imatinib given for two years as adjuvant therapy achieved no disease progression after prolonged follow-up

    NUTRITION IN IBD PATIENT'S: WHAT ARE THE PROSPECTS?

    Summary: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic disorder characterized by a relapsing-remitting course, which alternates between active and quiescent states, ultimately impairing a patients quality of life. The two main types of IBD are Crohn's disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC). In physiological conditions the gut is costantly exposed to various antigens, commensal microflora and pathogens and the inflammatory response is finely balanced. It is thought that a vast number of environmental risk factors may be implicated in the development of IBD, including smoking factors, dietary factors, psycological stress, use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and oral contraceptives, appendicectomy, breastfeeding, as well as infections. Nutritional support, as a primary therapy, has a crucial role in the management of patients with IBD. The gut microbiota is clearly manipulated by dietary components such as n-3 polyunsatured fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) and coniugated linoleic acid (CLA) which favorably reduce endotoxin load via shifts in the composition and metabolic activity of the microbial community. in particular, the beneficial effect of n-3 PUFAs and fermentable fiber, during the remission/quiescent phase of both CD and UC is Highlighted. In fact, PUFAs are associated with a less grade of inflammation since they are metabolized to 3-series prostagliandins and thromboxanes and 5-series leukotrienes and, in addition, exert antiinflammatory effects when compared with their n-6 PUFA counterparts. In similar action to dietary n-3 PUFA, coniugated linoleic acid (CLA) have been reported to ameliorate intestinal inflammation in animal models of IBD. Currently, is still unclear the role of the fibers in helping the remission of the disease. Data about the consumption of fiber are controversial. On one hand, dietary fibers can act as effective prebiotics by altering the intestinal microbial composition and promoting the growth of beneficial bacterial communities within the large intestine. On the other hand, fibers can promote diarrhea, pain and gas aggravating the clinical sate. Cocnclusion: We suggest that the consumption of fermentable fibers may have a good impact on patient's health
