    A qualitative exploration of perceptions of a digital intervention to promote physical activity in older adults

    Purpose: This study explored participant views of a web-based physical activity intervention for older adults and examined how they resonate with the key principles that guided intervention development. Methods: Qualitative interviews were carried out with 52 older adults. A deductive qualitative analysis approach was taken, based around the intervention’s key principles. Results: Participants expressed mostly positive views of the intervention features, broadly confirming the appropriateness of the key principles, which were to: (a) encourage intrinsic motivation for physical activity, (b) minimize the risk of users receiving activity suggestions that are inappropriate or unsafe, (c) offer users choice regarding the activities they engage with and build confidence to undertake more activity, and (d) minimize the cognitive load and need to engage with the intervention website. The findings also identified ways in which content could be improved to further increase acceptability. Conclusion: This study illustrates how using the person-based approach has enabled the identification and implementation of features that older adults appreciate

    Glucocorticoid administration in sepsis and septic shock: Time for a paradigm change?

    The use of corticosteroids in patients with septic shock remains controversial. Questions remain regarding the more appropriate dose, the optimal timing to initiate therapy, the selection of patients who will benefit most from the treatment and the exact mechanisms involved in their effectiveness. Recent studies have highlighted that, in critically ill patients, corticosteroid metabolism was reduced and associated with high circulating Cortisol levels. Hence the required doses of hydrocortisone may be lower than the currently recommended doses in septic shock (i.e. 200 mg/day). However, altered expression and/or function of corticosteroid receptors may still suggest that higher hydrocortisone doses are necessary to overcome this so-called "steroid-resistance".     14-fs high temporal quality injector for ultra-high intensity laser

    International audienceWe present a chirped pulse amplification (CPA) Ti:Sa laser generating sub-15 fs pulses with expected high temporal quality. Gain-narrowing in the pre-amplifier is balanced by a variable spectral reflectivity mirror and by a fine adaptation of the saturation conditions. A crossed polarized wave generation (XPW) filter is introduced to enhance the contrast, reduce the pulse duration and improve the spectral quality. The pulses are generated at 10 Hz repetition rate, with pulse energy of 110 μJ and very clean Gaussian spectrum. The temporal contrast is evaluated by a measurement before the XPW filter and calculations of the enhancement by the filter. The potential temporal incoherent contrast is 10^12 and the coherent contrast 10^10. The performances of the system make it suitable as an injector for petawatt lasers operating in the double CPA scheme

    Abstract With the capacity to produce and record data electronically, Scientific research and the data associated with it have grown at an unprecedented rate. However, despite a decent amount of data now existing in an electronic form, it is still common for scientific research to be recorded in an unstructured text format with inconsistent context (vocabularies) which vastly reduces the potential for direct intelligent analysis. Research has demonstrated that the use of semantic technologies such as ontologies to structure and enrich scientific data can greatly improve this potential. However, whilst there are many ontologies that can be used for this purpose, there is still a vast quantity of scientific terminology that does not have adequate semantic representation. A key area for expansion identified by the authors was the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) domain due to its high usage across many areas of Pharma. As such we have produced a set of these terms and other bioassay related terms to be incorporated into the BioAssay Ontology (BAO), which was identified as the most relevant ontology for this work. A number of use cases developed by experts in the field were used to demonstrate how these new ontology terms can be used, and to set the scene for the continuation of this work with a look to expanding this work out into further relevant domains. The work done in this paper was part of Phase 1 of the SEED project (Semantically Enriching electronic laboratory notebook (eLN) Data)
