    WS2 anode in Na and K-ion battery: Effect of upper cut-off potential on electrochemical performance

    Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs)-based layered anode materials are gaining attention because of their large interlayer spacing to host Na- and K-ions. However, the capacity retention and coulombic efficiency are major obstacles for such rechargeable K-ion battery anodes. Beside, understanding operating potential window employed during charge-discharge processes plays important role on the electrochemical performance. In this work, the impact of operating potential window of WS2 electrodes during charge-discharge is investigated in Na and K-ion battery. WS2 nano-plates are synthesized using one step solid-state reaction under autogenic pressure at elevated temperature (RAPET) method. The upper cut-off potential is restricted to 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 V to understand the stability of the electrode. The restriction of upper cut-off potential at 2.0 V, results into the capacity retention of 73% (180 mAh g−1) and 75% (250 mAh g−1) in Potassium-ion and Sodium-ion batteries at the end of 50 cycles. Further, kinetic analysis reveals that the K-ion storage in WS2 electrode is diffusion dominated due to intercalation of K-ion into host lattice, and Na-ion storage is pseudo-capacitive in nature

    PERFIL DE SENSIBILIDADE DO GÊNERO CANDIDA A ANTIFÚNGICOS EM UM HOSPITAL DE REFERÊNCIA DE ALTA COMPLEXIDADE NA REGIÃO NORDESTE DO BRASIL

    Introdução: Nos últimos anos tem-se observado, principalmente no ambiente hospitalar, um aumento de infecções por Candida spp. resistentes a antifúngicos. Esta resistência tem elevado a taxa de insucesso na terapêutica contra esses agentes, causando, consequentemente, aumentos de morbidade e mortalidade. A infecção fúngica é uma preocupação crescente em ambientes hospitalares, com a Candida parapsilosis emergindo como uma das espécies mais frequentemente isoladas em hemoculturas. Objetivos: Descrever o perfil de sensibilidade de isolados de espécies do gênero Candida a antifúngicos, com foco em fluconazol. Metodologia: Estudo retrospectivo, realizado em um hospital de rede privada de alta complexidade no estado de Pernambuco, no período de janeiro 2022 a dezembro de 2022. Foram selecionados, a partir de isolados de hemocultura, onde houve crescimento de Candida spp. Para detecção da positividade foi utilizado o sistema automatizado BD BACTEC™ FX e para identificação precisa das amostras, foi utilizado a técnica de espectrometria de massa MALDI-TOF. A suscetibilidade aos antifúngicos foi avaliada pelo método de microdiluição em caldo Sensititre Yeast One. Foram avaliados três antifúngicos (anfotericina B, micafungina e fluconazol. Resultados: Foram isoladas 196 amostras de hemocultura, as quais foram identificadas como; 78 C. parapsilosis, 46 C. tropicalis, 40 C. albicans, 22 C. glabrata, 8 C krusei e 2 C. orthopsilosis. Quanto ao perfil de sensibilidade, elas se mostraram sensíveis aos antifúngicos testados, sendo a resistência ainda um fenômeno raro entre cepas de C. parapsilosis isoladas no hospital. Conclusão: Este estudo destaca a prevalência de Candida parapsilosis isolada em hemoculturas e demonstra a sensibilidade de 81% ao fluconazol, um antifúngico de menor custo. Os resultados indicam que o tratamento empírico com esse agente pode ser uma estratégia eficaz para o manejo de infecções causadas por essa espécie. Esse estudo tem como objetivo fornecer informações valiosas para o tratamento, mediante o escalonamento da droga antes da obtenção dos resultados do antifungigrama

    Dipotassium terephthalate as promising potassium storing anode with DFT calculations

    We report combined experimental and theoretical studies of dipotassium terephthalate as anode material for K-ion battery application. Both pristine and carbon nanotube-containing dipotassium terephthalate materials are synthesized using an ultrafast microwave-assisted method. We found that carbon nanotube (CNT)-containing dipotassium terephthalate composite electrode delivers an initial reversible capacity of 247 mAh/g with 78% capacity retention, whereas pristine K2Tp deliveries an initial reversible capacity of 212 mAh/g with 53% capacity retention at the end of 100 cycles, at a current density of 50 mA/g. The density functional theory-based calculations have shown superior stability of dipotassium terephthalate lattice against the intercalation of potassium atoms. The quantum calculations are also employed to unravel the specifics of intercalation energetics of potassium ions into dipotassium terephthalate lattice. The intercalation and de-intercalation potentials of K-ions are obtained using cyclic voltammetry and compared with theoretical calculations under the assumption of a two-electron transfer reaction. The results of this study lay the ground for understanding the electrochemical processes involved in the operation of an organic anode in K-ion batteries, and thereby can facilitate the design of optimal organic molecular crystal-based electrode materials for battery applications

    Kelp-carbon uptake by Arctic deep-sea food webs plays a noticeable role in maintaining ecosystem structural and functional traits

In Norwegian kelp forests, 90% of the kelp production is exported to adjacent ecosystems where it can play a significant role in shaping benthic communities. We quantified the major structural and functional traits of an Arctic deep-sea ecosystem associated with kelp exports and assessed the ecological role of kelp export into the deep-sea system. We first developed a food-web model using the Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) approach to represent the state of the deep (450 m) ecosystem of the Malangen fjord (Northern Norway) in 2017. Subsequently, we used the temporal dynamic model Ecosim to explore the structure and functioning traits of a theoretical deep-sea ecosystem projecting a decrease of kelp detritus biomass reaching the deep-sea ecosystem. Overall, our findings reveal that kelp detritus from shallow coastal areas has a small but noticeable role structuring the deep-sea ecosystem of Malangen. The temporal simulations show important differences depending on the application of mediating effects, which allow considering the detritus as a mediating group in prey-predator interaction, in addition to its direct role in trophic relationships. When mediating effects are applied, biomass increases for benthopelagic shrimps and suprabenthos groups and decreases for rays and skates, velvet belly, rabbitfish and other commercial demersal fishes under the low kelp detritus scenarios. Biomass-based and trophic-based indicators reveal a noticeable impact on the deep-sea ecosystem structure due to depletion of kelp detritus.     Investigating the stable operating voltage for the MnFe2O4 Li-ion battery anode

    Template-free synthesis of MnFe2O4nanopowder is carried out by co-precipitation in a basic medium, evaluating the effects of cation ratio and reaction temperature on the phase composition crystallinity of the resulting powder. Single-phase samples of the target spinel are obtained at the stoichiometric Mn : Fe = 1 : 2 ratio under reflux conditions (100 °C), as confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transformed Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images confirmed that nanostructured MnFe2O4particles are obtained, which is further supported by Debye-Scherrer calculations from XRD data and by AFM measurements. The produced oxide demonstrated considerable thermal stability according to TGA data. Magnetic characteristics are strongly dependent on the content of magnetic phase and phase composition, achieving a maximum of 54 emu g−1for single-phase stoichiometric MnFe2O4. Further, the electrochemical stability of this material as the anode is investigated in Li-ion batteries (LIBs). When the MnFe2O4electrode is operated in the potential window of 0.01-3.0 V, the reversible capacity is enhanced by almost 45% (802 mA h g−1) after the 100thcycle with reference to the 2ndcycle reversible capacity (548 mA h g−1). Methodically dQ/dVplots are analyzed and compared to understand processes behind the evolution of extra capacity beyond its theoretical limit. Further, the upper cut-off potential is tuned to identify a stable operating potential window for the MnFe2O4anode in LIBs.
