    Curriculum agility at faculty, department, program, and course level

    This short paper describes the first prototyping of a self-evaluation process of Curriculum Agility at a Faculty of Technology in Sweden. The process comprises guided, semi-structured, individual interviews at different organisational levels within the faculty, a joint narrative based on those interviews, prioritizing development strategies per level, and jointly mapping them on importance and implementation time. The self-evaluation is part of and based on the research on the principles of Curriculum Agility. The results show the interplay in timely curriculum change for futureproof engineering education between the teaching staff, the systems and the people who control the systems. The self-evaluation brings together the different perspectives and perceptions within the faculty and gives insight in how those affect the willingness towards and occurrence of curriculum development. This work in progress indicates how doing such a qualitative self-evaluation paves the road for transparent strategic dialogues on a holistic level about what to give attention and organize differently

    Helicobacter pylori Adapts to Chronic Infection and Gastric Disease via pH-Responsive BabA-Mediated Adherence

    International audienceThe BabA adhesin mediates high-affinity binding of Helicobacter pylori to the ABO blood group antigen-glycosylated gastric mucosa. Here we show that BabA is acid responsive-binding is reduced at low pH and restored by acid neutralization. Acid responsiveness differs among strains; often correlates with different intragastric regions and evolves during chronic infection and disease progression; and depends on pH sensor sequences in BabA and on pH reversible formation of high-affinity binding BabA multimers. We propose that BabA's extraordinary reversible acid responsiveness enables tight mucosal bacterial adherence while also allowing an effective escape from epithelial cells and mucus that are shed into the acidic bactericidal lumen and that bio-selection and changes in BabA binding properties through mutation and recombination with babA-related genes are selected by differences among individuals and by changes in gastric acidity over time. These processes generate diverse H. pylori subpopulations, in which BabA's adaptive evolution contributes to H. pylori persistence and overt gastric disease

    Sammanfattning Bakgrund Patienter med självskadebeteende har rätt till god vård på lika villkor. SBU:s rapport (2015) har visat att det finns risk för att detta inte efterlevs. Sjuksköterskornas bemötande kan ha stor betydelse för hur patienter med självskadebeteende upplever vården men i dagsläget finns det ingen samlad bild över hur bemötande ser ut. Syfte Att genom en litteraturgranskning undersöka sjuksköterskors bemötande gentemot patienter med självskadebeteende inom somatisk vård. Metod Sökningar genomfördes i tre databaser, PsychINFO, PubMed och CINAHL, 13 artiklar valdes till ut till kvalitetsgranskningen. De inkluderade artiklarna berörde sjuksköterskor i somatisk öppen och sluten vård som kommit i kontakt med patienter med självskadebeteende, oavsett kön och etnicitet. Huvudresultat Granskningen utmynnade i två ämnesområden, attityder och faktorer som påverkar sjuksköterskors bemötande. Sjuksköterskorna hade olika upplevelser av mötet med patienter med självskadebeteende och det förekom att sjuksköterskor under vissa förutsättningar kunde ha negativa attityder gentemot patienter med självskadebeteende. En negativ attityd gentemot patientgruppen kunde påverka bemötandet och skapade svårigheter vid vårdandet av patienterna. Sjuksköterskornas ålder, erfarenhet, utbildning påverkade sjuksköterskornas bemötande gentemot patienterna, Det framkom även brister som kunde påverka attityderna, dessa var avsaknad av rutiner, riktlinjer och kunskap. Slutsats Sjuksköterskorna bemötte patienter med självskadebeteende med både negativa och positiva attityder. Attityderna påverkades av olika faktorer så som känslor, erfarenhet, stress, kunskap och brist på resurser, vilket ledde till svårigheter vid bemötandet och vårdandet av patientgruppen. Vårdens kvalitet och patientsäkerheten skulle kunna öka om sjuksköterskorna som möter och vårdar patienter med självskadebeteende hade de resurser de enligt litteraturgenomgången saknar. Fortsatta studier behövs för att i framtiden utveckla omhändertagandet av patienter med självskadebeteende och sträva mot likvärdig vård

    Differences between digital and physical consultations: From a general practitioner's perspective.

    Utvecklingen av digitala kontaktvägar har ökat inom primärvården i Sverige. Detta har lett till att antalet digitala vårdbesök har stigit där fler vårdgivare erbjuder möjligheten för patienter att söka vård digitalt. Telemedicin, medicinsk vård på distans, ökade under Covid-19-pandemin och har visat sig kan hjälpa med förkortning av vårdköer och minska spridning av virus, vilket kan minska belastningen på vården. Samtidigt visar forskning att kommunikation mellan patient och vårdpersonal försvåras vid videosamtal samt att videosamtal kan försvåra diagnossättning för vårdpersonal. Denna studie syftar till att genom åtta semi-strukturerade intervjuer med svenska allmänläkare vidare utforska deras upplevelser och attityder av hur digitala vårdbesök påverkar mötet och relationsbyggandet mellan läkare och patient samt hur det påverkar allmänläkares möjligheter till diagnossättning och upprätthållande av patientsekretess. Resultatet av de transkriberade intervjuerna visar att digitala patientmöten inte kan mäta sig med fysiska när läkare ska bygga en relation med nya patienter samt att fysiska patientmöten ger läkare mest information att använda sig av vid diagnossättning. Det framgår även att läkare upplever att de kan hantera och upprätthålla patientsekretessen vid digitala vårdbesök lika bra som vid fysiska vårdbesök och att den tillgänglighet som digitala patientmöten erbjuder kan användas som komplement till traditionella, fysiska möten. The development of digital contact routes has increased within primary healthcare in Sweden. This has led to an increase in the number of digital healthcare visits, where more healthcare providers offer the opportunity for patients to seek healthcare digitally. Telemedicine, the provision of remote clinical services, increased during the Covid-19 pandemic and has been shown to help shorten healthcare waiting time and reduce the spread of viruses, which can reduce the burden on healthcare. Simultaneously, research shows that communication between patient and healthcare staff is made more difficult during video calls and that video calls can make diagnosis difficult for healthcare staff. This study aims to, through eight semi-structured interviews with Swedish general practitioners, further explore their experiences and attitudes of how digital healthcare visits affect the meeting and relationship building between doctor and patient, as well as how it affects general practitioners' opportunities for diagnosis and maintaining patient confidentiality. The results of the transcribed interviews show that digital patient meetings cannot measure up to physical ones when doctors have to build a relationship with new patients and that physical patient meetings give doctors the most information to use when making a diagnosis. It also appears that doctors feel that they can manage and maintain patient confidentiality during digital healthcare visits as well as during physical healthcare visits and that the accessibility that digital patient meetings offer can be used as a supplement to traditional, physical meetings

    Differences as catalysts for professional learning—Participating in a student exchange program between Sweden and Uganda

    The aim was to describe the experiences of some university students and the effect on their own learning and professional development by participating in an exchange program. Data were derived from two focus group interviews with students (n = 12) who enrolled in a 12-week international exchange program between: (a) the occupational therapy education department at the Institute of Allied Health and Management Sciences in Kampala and its equivalent b) the Karolinska Institutet (KI), Sweden. The findings comprised five categories reflecting the students learning experiences: (1) Learning through the unfamiliar, (2) Differences as catalysts for professional learning, (3) The importance of interaction with others for beneficial learning, (4) Learning related changes in professional identity and one’s own persona, and (5) Experienced transfer of learning toward a sustainable lifelong learning style. The findings reflected a spectra of similarities between the students, almost regardless of their background and culture, also that students can learn substantially by being confronted by the unfamiliarity during an international exchange

    Linking Education and Research : A Roadmap for Higher Education Institutions at the Dawn of the Knowledge Society

    In an era characterized by a move towards a “knowledge society”, universities are central in fostering “knowledgeability”, that is the reflexive understanding of knowledge in knowledge societies. The objective of “knowledgeability” can be met through creating a stronger link between education and research. Furthermore, overall student performance, for example in critical thinking and problem solving, can be improved if research-related activities are incorporated into the curriculum. The aim of this paper is to use international examples to discuss the research- education nexus from four different perspectives, namely context, policy, implementation and quality, with case studies from higher education institutions in Singapore and Sweden. We suggest that different integrative technologies can be used to enhance the links, but it will be essential to consider the inputs of training, service and support in using new technology. Interestingly, the act of evaluating the link between education and research will increase awareness of this linkage by stakeholders involved in both education and research. In turn the link can be strengthened, contributing to increased quality in both education and research
