Cyclical relationships between GDP and housing market in France: Facts and factors at play.
In this paper we focus on cycles and trends of some macroeconomic and housing market variables representative of the French economy. In a first part, we empirically show that cycles in the housing sector, measured by housing prices, housing starts, building permits, sales or residential investment, are strongly correlated to GDP cycles with a lead lying between of one and four quarters, suggesting thus that a monitoring of housing fluctuations could bring useful information for macroeconomic forecasting. Interestingly, this result is robust to the various considered approaches. Moreover, it seems that the housing sector long-term trend possesses its own dynamics, quite different from the global French economic activity. Thus, in a second part, we review various structural factors that could drive housing market developments in France in the future.Economic cycles , Housing market , France.
Engineering of an Extreme Rainfall Detection System using Grid Computing
This paper describes a new approach for intensive rainfall data analysis. ITHACA's Extreme Rainfall Detection System (ERDS) is conceived to provide near real-time alerts related to potential exceptional rainfalls worldwide, which can be used by WFP or other humanitarian assistance organizations to evaluate the event and understand the potentially floodable areas where their assistance is needed. This system is based on precipitation analysis and it uses rainfall data from satellite at worldwide extent. This project uses the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis dataset, a NASA-delivered near real-time product for current rainfall condition monitoring over the world. Considering the great deal of data to process, this paper presents an architectural solution based on Grid Computing techniques. Our focus is on the advantages of using a distributed architecture in terms of performances for this specific purpos
Interactions of cultures and top people of Wikipedia from ranking of 24 language editions
Wikipedia is a huge global repository of human knowledge, that can be
leveraged to investigate interwinements between cultures. With this aim, we
apply methods of Markov chains and Google matrix, for the analysis of the
hyperlink networks of 24 Wikipedia language editions, and rank all their
articles by PageRank, 2DRank and CheiRank algorithms. Using automatic
extraction of people names, we obtain the top 100 historical figures, for each
edition and for each algorithm. We investigate their spatial, temporal, and
gender distributions in dependence of their cultural origins. Our study
demonstrates not only the existence of skewness with local figures, mainly
recognized only in their own cultures, but also the existence of global
historical figures appearing in a large number of editions. By determining the
birth time and place of these persons, we perform an analysis of the evolution
of such figures through 35 centuries of human history for each language, thus
recovering interactions and entanglement of cultures over time. We also obtain
the distributions of historical figures over world countries, highlighting
geographical aspects of cross-cultural links. Considering historical figures
who appear in multiple editions as interactions between cultures, we construct
a network of cultures and identify the most influential cultures according to
this network.Comment: 32 pages. 10 figures. Submitted for publication. Supporting

Improving palliative treatment of patients with non-operable cancer of the oesophagus: training doctors and nurses in the use of self-expanding metal stents (SEMS) in Malawi
Cancer of the oesophagus is the 6th most common cancer in Malawi. Nationwide only three hospitals are able to perform oesophagectomies, and there is no radiotherapy- or chemotherapy available. Owing to late presentation of the patients (sometimes in combination with co-morbidities such as HIV/AIDS or tuberculosis) the vast majority of patients are not suitable for surgery. Self-expanding metal stents (SEMS) of the oesophagus provide a suitable palliative option to improve the quality of life  for patients. This project took a nationwide approach, raising funds for both technical equipment and training of endoscopists and nursing staff throughout Malawi

Brachiaria humidicola (Rendle) Schweick.) is an important perennial forage grass found throughout the tropics. This species is polyploid, ranging from tetra to nonaploid, and apomictic, which makes genetic studies challenging; therefore, the number of currently available genetic resources is limited. The genomic architecture and evolution of U. humidicola and the molecular markers linked to apomixis were investigated in a full-sib F-1 population obtained by crossing the sexual accession H031 and the apomictic cultivar U. humidicola cv. BRS Tupi, both of which are hexaploid. A simple sequence repeat (SSR)-based linkage map was constructed for the species from 102 polymorphic and specific SSR markers based on simplex and double-simplex markers. The map consisted of 49 linkage groups (LGs) and had a total length of 1702.82 cM, with 89 microsatellite loci and an average map density of 10.6 cM. Eight homology groups (HGs) were formed, comprising 22 LGs, and the other LGs remained ungrouped. The locus that controls apospory (apo-locus) was mapped in LG02 and was located 19.4 cM from the locus Bh027.c.D2. In the cytological analyses of some hybrids, bi-to hexavalents at diakinesis were observed, as well as two nucleoli in some meiocytes, smaller chromosomes with preferential allocation within the first metaphase plate and asynchronous chromosome migration to the poles during anaphase. The linkage map and the meiocyte analyses confirm previous reports of hybridization and suggest an allopolyploid origin of the hexaploid U. humidicola. This is the first linkage map of an Urochloa species, and it will be useful for future quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis after saturation of the map and for genome assembly and evolutionary studies in Urochloa spp. Moreover, the results of the apomixis mapping are consistent with previous reports and confirm the need for additional studies to search for a co-segregating marker.11Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa)Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) [478262/2004-3, 502336/2005-6, 482458/2007-0]State of Sao Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) [2005/51010-0, 2008/52197-4]Foundation for Science and Technological Development of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul (Fundect)Coordenacao de Aperfeicoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior (CAPES)FAPESP [2007/57022-5, 2010/50032-8]Coordenacao de Aperfeicoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior (CAPES - EMBRAPA Program)CNPq [304914/2010-0]CNPqConselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior (CAPES)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior (CAPES)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e Tecnológico (CNPq
