Evolution of coupled lives' dependency across generations and pricing impact
This paper studies the dependence between coupled lives - both within and across generations - and its effects on prices of reversionary annuities in the presence of longevity risk. Longevity risk is represented via a stochastic mortality intensity. Dependence is modelled through copula functions. We consider Archimedean single and multi-parameter copulas. We and that dependence decreases when passing from older generations to younger generations. Not only the level of dependence but also its features - as measured by the copula - change across generations: the best-fit Archimedean copula is not the same across generations. Moreover, for all the generations under exam the single-parameter copula is dominated by the two-parameter one. The independence assumption produces quantifiable mispricing of reversionary annuities. The misspecification of the copula produces different mispricing effects on different generations. The research is conducted using a well-known dataset of double life contracts
The management of de-cumulation risks in a defined contribution environment
The aim of the paper is to lay the theoretical foundations for the construction of a flexible tool that can be used by pensioners to find optimal investment and consumption choices in the distribution phase of a defined contribution pension scheme. The investment/consumption plan is adopted until the time of compulsory annuitization, taking into account the possibility of earlier death. The effect of the bequest motive and the desire to buy a higher annuity than the one purchasable at retirement are included in the objective function. The mathematical tools provided by dynamic programming techniques are applied to find closed form solutions: numer-ical examples are also presented. In the model, the trade-off between the different desires of the individual regarding consumption and final annuity can be dealt with by choosing appropriate weights for these factors in the setting of the problem. Conclusions are twofold. Firstly, we find that there is a natural time-varying target for the size of the fund, which acts as a sort of safety level for the needs of the pensioner. Secondly, the personal preferences of the pensioner can be translated into optimal choices, which in turn affect the distribution of the consumption path and of the final annuity
Formation of the first three gravitational-wave observations through isolated binary evolution
During its first 4 months of taking data, Advanced LIGO has detected
gravitational waves from two binary black hole mergers, GW150914 and GW151226,
along with the statistically less significant binary black hole merger
candidate LVT151012. We use our rapid binary population synthesis code COMPAS
to show that all three events can be explained by a single evolutionary channel
-- classical isolated binary evolution via mass transfer including a common
envelope phase. We show all three events could have formed in low-metallicity
environments (Z = 0.001) from progenitor binaries with typical total masses
, and , for
GW150914, GW151226, and LVT151012, respectively.Comment: Published in Nature Communication
Analysis of two heat storage integrations for an Organic Rankine Cycle Parabolic trough solar power plant
Among the concentrated solar power technologies, those based on Organic Rankine Cycles have a very
low market presence. However they have favorable characteristics for applications with low temperature
and small/medium size (<10 MW), such as off-grid applications or distributed power generation.
In this paper is analyzed a 5MW parabolic trough plant integrated with an Organic Rankine cycle
power block and thermal storage. On this purpose, two different thermal storage integrations are analyzed.
They are based on two different heat storage layouts: direct system using Hitec XL both as Heat
Transfer Fluid and as storage medium; indirect system using Therminol VP-1 as Heat Transfer Fluid
and Hitec XL as storage medium.
Full system performance at rated and off-design conditions is presented operating with different
organic working fluids. Its potential application and main challenges for its development are discussed
in terms of performance and costs. Among the analyzed working fluids, the best results were obtained
for the cycle working with Toluene with an efficiency at the power block of 31.5% and an estimated power
block cost of 825 €/kW. The indirect storage layout was the most interesting from the point of view of
Levelized Electricity Cost (16.19 c€/kW) and productivity (28.2 GW h/y for a 5 MWel plant) for 10 h of
storage However, it results in a storage tanks volume 26% greater than the obtained for the equivalent
direct storage layout. The results show the competitiveness and the potential of the proposed integrated
small size parabolic trough designs for isolated applications as mines or for some distributed generation
uses where grid capacity is limited
Innovative Online Curriculum Writing: A Practical Approach for Multiple Authors/Multiple Locations
The technology-based writing method described here enabled collaboration from distant locations. A comprehensive and well-integrated 4-H quilt curriculum was the goal. Seven writers used an electronic activity template based on 4-H Cooperative Curriculum System standards. A hyper-linked spreadsheet was developed. Each writer input their writing from the template to their separate sheet, which was hyper-linked to the master spreadsheet. Using FTP client software, all writers had access to updated materials on the master spreadsheet at all times. The writer/editor could see all work, monitor duplicate efforts, and put writing into one voice. A 284-page coherent and comprehensive curriculum resulted
Accuracy of inference on the physics of binary evolution from gravitational-wave observations
The properties of the population of merging binary black holes encode some of
the uncertain physics of the evolution of massive stars in binaries. The binary
black hole merger rate and chirp mass distribution are being measured by
ground-based gravitational-wave detectors. We consider isolated binary
evolution and explore how accurately the physical model can be constrained with
such observations by applying the Fisher information matrix to the merging
black hole population simulated with the rapid binary population synthesis code
COMPAS. We investigate variations in four COMPAS parameters: common envelope
efficiency, kick velocity dispersion, and mass loss rates during the luminous
blue variable and Wolf--Rayet stellar evolutionary phases. We find that 1000
observations would constrain these model parameters to a fractional accuracy of
a few percent. Given the empirically determined binary black hole merger rate,
we can expect gravitational-wave observations alone to place strong constraints
on the physics of stellar and binary evolution within a few years.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures; version accepted by Monthly Notices of the Royal

Predicting discharge from a complex karst system using the ensemble smoother with multiple data assimilation
[EN] Can the ensemble smoother with multiple data assimilation be used to predict discharge in an Alpine karst aquifer? The answer is yes, at least, for the Bossea aquifer studied. The ensemble smoother is used to fit a unit hydrograph simultaneously with other parameters in a hydrologic model, such as base flow, infiltration coefficient, or snow melting contribution. The fitting uses observed discharge flow rates, daily precipitations, and temperatures to define the model parameters. The data assimilation approach gives excellent results for fitting individual events. After the analysis of 27 such events, two average models are defined to be used to predict flow discharge from precipitation and temperature, one model for prediction during spring (when snow melting has an impact) and another one during autumn, yielding acceptable results, particularly for the fall rainfall events. The lesser performance for the spring events may indicate that the snow melting approximation needs to be revised. The results also show that the parameterization of the infiltration coefficient needs further exploration. Overall, the main conclusion is that the ensemble smoother could be used to define a characteristic "signature" of a karst aquifer to be used in forecast analyses. The reasons for using the ensemble smoother instead of other stochastic approaches are that it is easy to use and explain and provides an estimation of the uncertainty about the predictions.J. Improving palliative treatment of patients with non-operable cancer of the oesophagus: training doctors and nurses in the use of self-expanding metal stents (SEMS) in Malawi
Cancer of the oesophagus is the 6th most common cancer in Malawi. Nationwide only three hospitals are able to perform oesophagectomies, and there is no radiotherapy- or chemotherapy available. Owing to late presentation of the patients (sometimes in combination with co-morbidities such as HIV/AIDS or tuberculosis) the vast majority of patients are not suitable for surgery. Self-expanding metal stents (SEMS) of the oesophagus provide a suitable palliative option to improve the quality of life  for patients. This project took a nationwide approach, raising funds for both technical equipment and training of endoscopists and nursing staff throughout Malawi
