    Automated vessel centerline extraction and diameter measurement in OCT Angiography

    Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) is a non-invasive imaging technique that enables the visualizationof perfused vasculature in vivo. In ophthalmology,it allows the physician to monitor diseases affecting the vascular networks of the retina such as age-related macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy. Due to the complexity of the vasculature in the retina,it is of interest to automatically extract vascular parameters which describe the condition of the vessels. Suitable parameters could improve the diagnosis and the treatment during the course of therapy.We present an automated algorithm tocompute the diameters of the vessels in en face OCTA images. After segmentingthe images, the vessel centerlinewascomputed using a thinningalgorithm.The centerline wasrefined by detecting invalid pixelssuch as spursandbycontinuing the centerline until the endsof the vessels. Lastly, the diameter wascomputed by dilating a discrete circle at the position of the centerline or by measuring the distance between both borders of the vessels. The developed algorithms were applied to in vivo images of human eyes. Certainly, no ground truth was available. Hence, a plausibility check was performed by comparing the measured diameters of two different layers of the retina (Superficial Vascular Complex (SVC) and Deep Vascular Complex (DVC)). Each layer exhibits a different characteristic vasculature.The algorithm clearly reflectedthe differences from both retinal layers. The measured diameters demonstrate that the DVC consists of more capillaries and considerably smaller vessels compared to the SVC.The presented method enables automated analysis of the retinal vasculature and forms thereby the basis for monitoringdiseases influencing the vasculature of the retina.     FACT -- The G-APD revolution in Cherenkov astronomy

    Since two years, the FACT telescope is operating on the Canary Island of La Palma. Apart from its purpose to serve as a monitoring facility for the brightest TeV blazars, it was built as a major step to establish solid state photon counters as detectors in Cherenkov astronomy. The camera of the First G-APD Cherenkov Telesope comprises 1440 Geiger-mode avalanche photo diodes (G-APD), equipped with solid light guides to increase the effective light collection area of each sensor. Since no sense-line is available, a special challenge is to keep the applied voltage stable although the current drawn by the G-APD depends on the flux of night-sky background photons significantly varying with ambient light conditions. Methods have been developed to keep the temperature and voltage dependent response of the G-APDs stable during operation. As a cross-check, dark count spectra with high statistics have been taken under different environmental conditions.     Cauchy's sum theorem is a prototype of what is today a basic result on the convergence of a series of functions in undergraduate analysis. We seek to interpret Cauchy's proof, and discuss the related epistemological questions involved in comparing distinct interpretive paradigms. Cauchy's proof is often interpreted in the modern framework of a Weierstrassian paradigm. We analyze Cauchy's proof closely and show that it finds closer proxies in a different modern framework.     Thin-film silicon detectors for particle detection

    Integrated particle sensors have been developed using thin-film on ASIC technology. For this purpose, hydrogenated amorphous silicon diodes, in various configurations, have been optimized for particle detection. These devices were first deposited on glass substrates to optimize the material properties and the dark current of very thick diodes (with thickness up to 50 ÎĽm). Corresponding diodes were later directly deposited on CMOS readout chips. These integrated particle sensors have been characterized using light pulse illumination and beta particle irradiation from 63Ni and 90Sr sources. Direct detection of single low- and high-energy beta particles have been demonstrated. The application of this new integrated particle sensor concept for medical imaging is also discussed

    FACT -- the First Cherenkov Telescope using a G-APD Camera for TeV Gamma-ray Astronomy (HEAD 2010)

    Geiger-mode Avalanche Photodiodes (G-APD) bear the potential to significantly improve the sensitivity of Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT). We are currently building the First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope (FACT) by refurbishing an old IACT with a mirror area of 9.5 square meters and construct a new, fine pixelized camera using novel G-APDs. The main goal is to evaluate the performance of a complete system by observing very high energy gamma-rays from the Crab Nebula. This is an important field test to check the feasibility of G-APD-based cameras to replace at some time the PMT-based cameras of planned future IACTs like AGIS and CTA.     FACT - The First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope: Status and Results

    The First G-APD Cherenkov telescope (FACT) is the first telescope using silicon photon detectors (G-APD aka. SiPM). It is built on the mount of the HEGRA CT3 telescope, still located at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, and it is successfully in operation since Oct. 2011. The use of Silicon devices promises a higher photon detection efficiency, more robustness and higher precision than photo-multiplier tubes. The FACT collaboration is investigating with which precision these devices can be operated on the long-term. Currently, the telescope is successfully operated from remote and robotic operation is under development. During the past months of operation, the foreseen monitoring program of the brightest known TeV blazars has been carried out, and first physics results have been obtained including a strong flare of Mrk501. An instantaneous flare alert system is already in a testing phase. This presentation will give an overview of the project and summarize its goals, status and first results

    Search for Branons at LEP

    We search, in the context of extra-dimension scenarios, for the possible existence of brane fluctuations, called branons. Events with a single photon or a single Z-boson and missing energy and momentum collected with the L3 detector in e^+ e^- collisions at centre-of-mass energies sqrt{s}=189-209$ GeV are analysed. No excess over the Standard Model expectations is found and a lower limit at 95% confidence level of 103 GeV is derived for the mass of branons, for a scenario with small brane tensions. Alternatively, under the assumption of a light branon, brane tensions below 180 GeV are excluded

    A novel camera type for very high energy gamma-ray astronomy based on Geiger-mode avalanche photodiodes

    Geiger-mode avalanche photodiodes (G-APD) are promising new sensors for light detection in atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. In this paper, the design and commissioning of a 36-pixel G-APD prototype camera is presented. The data acquisition is based on the Domino Ring Sampling (DRS2) chip. A sub-nanosecond time resolution has been achieved. Cosmic-ray induced air showers have been recorded using an imaging mirror setup, in a self-triggered mode. This is the first time that such measurements have been carried out with a complete G-APD camera.Comment: 9 pages with 11 figure
