Clinical repercussions of Martin-Gruber anastomosis: anatomical study
AbstractObjectiveThe main objective of this study was to describe Martin-Gruber anastomosis anatomically and to recognize its clinical repercussions.Method100 forearms of 50 adult cadavers were dissected in an anatomy laboratory. The dissection was performed by means of a midline incision along the entire forearm and the lower third of the upper arm. Two flaps including skin and subcutaneous tissue were folded back on the radial and ulnar sides, respectively.ResultsNerve communication between the median and ulnar nerves in the forearm (Martin-Gruber anastomosis) was found in 27 forearms. The anastomosis was classified into six types: type I: anastomosis between the anterior interosseous nerve and the ulnar nerve (n=9); type II: anastomosis between the anterior interosseous nerve and the ulnar nerve at two points (double anastomosis) (n=2); type III: anastomosis between the median nerve and the ulnar nerve (n=4); type IV: anastomosis between branches of the median nerve and ulnar nerve heading toward the flexor digitorum profundus muscle of the fingers; these fascicles form a loop with distal convexity (n=5); type V: intramuscular anastomosis (n=5); and type VI: anastomosis between a branch of the median nerve to the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle and the ulnar nerve (n=2).ConclusionKnowledge of the anatomical variations relating to the innervation of the hand has great importance, especially with regard to physical examination, diagnosis, prognosis and surgical treatment. If these variations are not given due regard, errors and other consequences will be inevitable
The objective of this research was to perform the agronomic and edaphoclimatic characterization of vineyards and to determine cultivation trends for the main varieties employed in the production of high altitude fine wines in Santa Catarina State, Brazil. High altitude vineyards were considered those vineyards located 900 m above sea level and vineyards belonging to members of the Santa Catarina Association of Altitude Fine Wines located below 900 m altitude. To assess cultivation trends, the vineyards were geo-referenced, following the Embrapa Uva e Vinho guidelines. To perform the edaphoclimatic characterization, the vineyard polygons were overlaid with physiographic, climatic and soil maps in a Geographic Information System. The characterization of the high altitude vineyards was based on planted area. The varieties with greatest areas were Cabernet Sauvignon (37.9%), Merlot (14.5%) Chardonnay (8.0%) and Sauvignon Blanc (7.5%). From 2009 to 2013 vineyards with C. Sauvignon were replaced for white varieties and for Pinot Noir, especially in altitudes over 1,100 m. A trend in the use of white varieties and Pinot Noir in new vineyards was identified, but the main trend was the increase of experimental areas, with additional 60 varieties of red and white grapes. In relation to physiography, the norm of the Acavitis requires that the vineyards of their associates be located above 900 m of altitude. However, vineyards were found at altitudes ranging from 675 m to 1,452 m, with 64.6% of the area found between altitudes ranging from 1,100 to 1,300 m above sea level. The annual rainfall was 240% higher than the values considered optimal described in the literature for high altitude vineyards. The average annual temperature ranged between 12 °C and 18 °C and both the temperature range as the annual hours of sunshine were considered sufficient to complete the cycle of all varieties.O objetivo desse trabalho foi realizar a caracterização agronômica e edafoclimática dos vinhedos e determinar as tendências de uso das principais variedades para produzir vinhos finos nas regiões de elevada altitude do Estado de Santa Catarina.
STUDY OF THE MEDIAN AND ULNAR NERVOUS BRANKS TO KAPLAN’S LINE
ABSTRACT Objective: This study aims to present lines A1 and A2 in association with Kaplan’s cardinal line (LCK), and relate them to the thenar motor branch of the median nerve (RMTNM) and to the deep branch of the ulnar nerve (RPNU). Methods: Ten hands of five adult cadavers were dissected. Results: The RMTNM origin was positioned proximal to the LCK in all limbs. In two, the RMTNM was positioned exactly on the A1 line; in seven, it was on the ulnar side in relation to A1. In one, it was on the radial side relative to the A1. The origin of the RPNU was identified between the pisiform and the LCK in nine limbs; in one, the RPNU was positioned from the ulnar nerve in relation to A2; and in two, the A2 passed exactly at the point of division of the ulnar nerve into superficial branches and deep. We did not identify the positioning of the RPNU on the radial side of the A2 line. Conclusion: The impact of this study was to identify the anatomical trajectory of these nerves by detaching A1 and A2 along with the KCL, avoiding iatrogenic lesions during surgical procedures. After a discussion throughout the country two documents have been published in Quimica Nova: Mobilizing Axes in Chemistry and The Chemist's Education. Here, we describe the initial document which was the starting point for the discussion of a new series of papers published in this special issue of Quimica Nova which presents an overview of the Chemistry in our country and the perspectives and needs for the next decade.S7S1
Erythrina velutina Willd. alkaloids : piecing biosynthesis together from transcriptome analysis and metabolite profiling of seeds and leaves
Introduction: Natural products of pharmaceutical interest often do not reach the drug market due to the associated low yields and difficult extraction. Knowledge of biosynthetic pathways is a key element in the development of biotechnological strategies for plant specialized metabolite production. Erythrina species are mainly used as central nervous system depressants in folk medicine and are important sources of bioactive tetracyclic benzylisoquinoline alkaloids (BIAs), which can act on several pathology-related biological targets. Objectives: In this sense, in an unprecedented approach used with a non-model Fabaceae species grown in its unique arid natural habitat, a combined transcriptome and metabolome analyses (seeds and leaves) is presented. Methods: The Next Generation Sequencing-based transcriptome (de novo RNA sequencing) was carried out in a NextSeq 500 platform. Regarding metabolite profiling, the High-resolution Liquid Chromatography was coupled to DAD and a micrOTOF-QII mass spectrometer by using electrospray ionization (ESI) and Time of Flight (TOF) analyzer. The tandem MS/MS data were processed and analyzed through Molecular Networking approach. Results: This detailed macro and micromolecular approach applied to seeds and leaves of E. velutina revealed 42 alkaloids, several of them unique. Based on the combined evidence, 24 gene candidates were put together in a putative pathway leading to the singular alkaloid diversity of this species. Conclusion: Overall, these results could contribute by indicating potential biotechnological targets formodulation of erythrina alkaloids biosynthesis as well as improve molecular databases with omic data from a non-model medicinal plant, and reveal an interesting chemical diversity of Erythrina BIA harvested in Caatinga

Introduction: Natural products of pharmaceutical interest often do not reach the drug market due to the associated low yields and difficult extraction. Knowledge of biosynthetic pathways is a key element in the development of biotechnological strategies for plant specialized metabolite production. The scarce studies regarding non-model plants impair advances in this field. Erythrina spp. are mainly used as central nervous system depressants in folk medicine and are important sources of bioactive tetracyclic benzylisoquinoline alkaloids, which can act on several pathology-related biological targets. Objective: Herein the purpose is to employ combined transcriptome and metabolome analyses (seeds and leaves) of a non-model medicinal Fabaceae species grown in its unique arid natural habitat. The study tries to propose a putative biosynthetic pathway for the bioactive alkaloids by using an omic integrated approach. Methods: The Next Generation Sequencing-based transcriptome (de novo RNA sequencing) was carried out in a Illumina NextSeq 500 platform. Regarding the targeted metabolite profiling, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and the High-Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled to a micrOTOF-QII, High Resolution Mass Spectrometer, were used. Results: This detailed macro and micromolecular approach applied to seeds and leaves of E. velutina revealed 42 alkaloids by metabolome tools. Based on the combined evidence, 24 gene candidates were put together in a putative pathway leading to the singular alkaloid diversity of this species. Conclusion: These results contribute by indicating potential biotechnological targets Erythrina alkaloids biosynthesis as well as to improve molecular databases with omic data from a non-model medicinal plant. Furthermore, they reveal an interesting chemical diversity in Erythrina velutina harvested in Caatinga. Last, but not least, this data may also contribute to tap Brazilian biodiversity in a rational and sustainable fashion, promoting adequate public policies for preservation and protection of sensitive areas within the Caatinga
