Regional Differences in Returns to Education in Portugal

    Get PDF
This paper analyses differences in the return to education in Portugal across regions. For this purpose, we use an extended Mincer-type wage equation. OLS regression results indicate that differences in the rewards to education are substantially different across regions. In particular, they are much higher in Lisbon than in other regions. Since the average level of education in Lisbon is much higher in Lisbon than elsewhere such a differential is attributed to the fact that the demand for educated labour is much higher in Lisbon, likely due to differences in technology. A quantile regression analysis reveals that the return to education is not constant across the whole conditional wage distribution. This is valid for the 18 regions examined, although once again the impact of education on wages is higher in Lisbon regardless the quantile we examine.

Constraining the physics of the early Universe

The established cosmological theory which describes the history of the Universe since shortly after the “Big Bang” until today is remarkably successful. Thanks to the increasing precision of available observational data, we are now able to considerably constrain the geometry and composition of the Universe - and to glimpse how these will evolve in the near future. However, this success comes at a price: one must assume the Universe “started” in a highly fine-tuned initial condition. Understanding what came before this is therefore one of the main goals of modern cosmology. This thesis attempts to further our understanding of the epoch before this initial condition in three different ways. Firstly, the concept of negative absolute temperatures (NAT) is introduced and its potential relevance for cosmology is investigated. In particular, it is shown that a Universe at a NAT should undergo a period of inflation - although it is unclear whether this would be consistent with current observations. Secondly, work is done on the topic of the evolution of networks of cosmic strings - topological defects which are expected to form in a broad class of phase transitions the Universe may have gone through. A model which takes into account the presence of small-scale structure in strings is used to address questions concerning the existence and stability of scaling regimes for these networks. Finally, it is investigated how future experiments might try to falsify a simple class of canonical single-field slow-roll inflation models by measuring the running and the running of the running of the spectral index of scalar perturbations

Financiado para publicación en acceso aberto: Universidade de Vigo/CISUGNowadays, trends in deep learning for text classification are addressed to create complex models to deal with huge datasets. Deeper models are usually based on cutting edge neural network architectures, achieving good results in general but demanding better hardware than shallow ones. In this work, a new Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture (MobyDeep) for text classification tasks is proposed. Designed as a configurable tool, resultant models (MobyNets) are able to manage big corpora sizes under low computational costs. To achieve those milestones, the architecture was conceived to produce lightweight models, having their internal layers based on a new proposed convolutional block. That block was designed and customized by adapting ideas from image to text processing, helping to squeezing model sizes and to reduce computational costs. The architecture was also designed as a residual network, covering complex functions by extending models up to 28 layers. Moreover, middle layers were optimized by residual connections, helping to remove fully connected layers on top and resulting in Fully CNN. Corpus were chosen from the recent literature, aiming to define real scenarios when comparing configured MobyDeep models with other state-of the-art works. Thus, three models were configured in 8, 16 and 28 layers respectively, offering competitive accuracy results

Managing the Technology for Selectively Collecting Solid Waste in the Western Amazon Sub Region

This study's main objective is to study the complexity of technological management of the collection of solid waste, through the prism of reverse logistics; and to propose certain specific objectives: (1) to describe the form of concentration of solid waste in the group studied; (2) to analyze the impact of the volume of solid waste; and (3) to propose intervention measures for solid waste management. It asks what technology management model should guide the selective collection of solid waste in the Amazon. Based on the theory of convergence, it studies the strategy of competitive advantage in understanding the organizational system in the environment in which it operates; on this theory, Nobre (2011) addresses knowledge as a source that transmits competitive edge in order to contribute to a company's organizational system. The research is qualitative and descriptive; it applies the Case Study method, and related procedures. As a study, it confirms that the investigated collector cooperatives are vulnerable, which influences the conclusions of this study. It finds that the collectors employed by these organizations are the significant environmental agents in the process of reusing and recycling materials and thus play a key role in reverse logistics because they can return the waste to the production chain adding value and promoting shared management,. The results also point to the absence of a system to promote environmental education, despite the potential viability of the materials and regardless of the possible economic and social improvements to the Amazonians and their families. The system proposed here involves the selective collection of solid waste by intelligent machines, applying reverse logistics. This study could benefit business people, the government and other stakeholders in public policy and sustainability in fragile environments such as the Brazilian Amazon.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Contudo, o mercado de seguro agrícola brasileiro é insipiente e demandando reestruturação com intensa participação do setor privado e coordenado pelo do setor público.------------------------------------------------------Highly instrumental in the development of the agricultural sector insofar as it protects farmers from adverse weather and market conditions, agricultural insurance also plays a crucial role not only in income and employment generation, but also in technological advancements. Besides market risks, the agricultural sector is confronted with a wide spectrum of other risks, which makes agriculture an eminently risky enterprise. Chief among these risks is the high dependence of the agricultural activity on hard to control weather-driven events, so that natural environmental variability and its interaction with biotic factors can greatly affect crop yields. The historical reality shows that agricultural insurance allows that rural producer maintain the income level in the occurrence of a casualty, which is important to the agricultural sector and the society. However, the Brazilian agricultural insurance market is at a generally incipient stage and in urgent need of a restructuring involving intense participation of the private sector and coordination by the public sector.seguro rural, risco agrícola, política agrícola, agro-insurance, agricultural risk, agricultural policy, Risk and Uncertainty,

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility, safety and accuracy of dobutamine/atropine stress echocardiography (DASE) for the detection of coronary artery desease (CAD) in renal transplant candidates. METHODS: Patients candidates to renal transplant were submitted consecutively to DASE and coronary angiography. The adopted angiographic criteria for CAD were an obstructive lesion of > 50% and > 70%. RESULTS: 148 patients underwent the DASE and the coronary angiography. Mean age was 52 ± 9 years, 69% of the patients were males; 27% had diabetic nephropathy and 73% had LVH; 63% were asymptomatic; 36% and 22% presented coronary obstructions > 50% and 70%, respectively. The DASE performance was 91% and major complication rate was 2.7%. The sensibility, specificity and accuracy for the diagnosis of coronary obstruction > 50% were 53% (CI:45-61), 87% (CI:81-93), and 75% (CI:63-83) respectively. For coronary obstruction > 70% these values were, respectively, 71% (CI:64-92), 85% (CI:79-91) and 81% (CI:75-87). The sensibility to detect univessel and multivessel disease was 41% (CI:19-63) and 78% (CI:64-92), respectively. CONCLUSION: The DASE was practical and safe; however, it presented a poor result for the detection of CAD regarding obstructions > 50%. It can be a useful screening for the detection of CAD in candidates with obstructions > 70% and multivessel disease.OBJETIVO: Avaliar a exeqüibilidade, a segurança e a acurácia diagnóstica do ecocardiograma sob estresse (EEDA) com dobutamina/atropina em candidatos a transplante renal.

Background: Nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT) is the limiting enzyme in one of pathways of synthesis of Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide, a redox coenzyme. NAMPT is considered as an insulin-mimetic factor and a potential regulatory factor in inflammatory and immune processes. Associations of circulating NAMPT levels with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and insulin resistance have been reported. We investigated association of circulating NAMPT levels and the rs9770242 NAMPT gene polymorphism with coronary artery disease (CAD).Methods: We studied 594 Brazilian subjects undergoing a coronary angiography (49% of whom had type 2 diabetes). CAD, defined as stenosis greater than 50% in one major coronary vessel or branch, was observed in 68% of subjects. Genetic studies were also performed in 858 North-American Non-Hispanic White subjects with type 2 diabetes (49% with CAD).Results: We observed an interaction between glycemic and CAD status on the comparison of NAMPT levels by CAD status. NAMPT levels were higher in type 2 diabetic patients with CAD as compared to those without CAD: 5.27 +/- 2.93 ng/ml vs. 4.43 +/- 2.94 ng/ml, p = 0.006 (mean +/- SD). NAMPT levels were not significantly different in non-diabetic subjects with or without CAD. the T-allele of rs9770242 was associated with CAD in the Brazilian cohort (OR 1.46, 95% CI 1.06 - 2.01, p = 0.02) while no association was observed in the North-American cohort. Conclusions: Our data suggest that circulating NAMPT levels are associated with CAD in type 2 diabetic patients. NAMPT rs9770242 polymorphism may be associated with CAD in some populations.Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Fed Univ São Paulo UNIFESP, Ctr Diabet, BR-04039002 São Paulo, BrazilCEDEBA, BR-41820000 Salvador, BA, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Cardiol Unit, BR-04039002 São Paulo, BrazilJoslin Diabet Ctr, Div Res, Boston, MA 02215 USAUniv Paris 07, INSERM, Res Unit 695, F-75018 Paris, FranceFed Univ São Paulo UNIFESP, Ctr Diabet, BR-04039002 São Paulo, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Cardiol Unit, BR-04039002 São Paulo, BrazilFAPESP: 2008/10209-6Web of Scienc
