a numerical and experimental investigation on the subtle dynamics of Tibetan bowls

UID/EAT/00472/2013Tibetan bowls have been traditionally used for ceremonial or meditation purposes, but also in contemporary music-making. They are handcrafted and produce different tones depending on their shape, size, mass and their alloy composition. Most important is the sound producing technique by impacting and/or rubbing, as well as the excitation location, the hardness and friction characteristics of the excitation stick. In a previous paper, we developed a physically-based method for nonlinear time-domain simulation of Tibetan bowls. Our computational approach, based on a compact modal formulation, produces realistic dynamical responses. In the present paper we focus on an interesting feature of Tibetan bowls: in order to produce self-excited responses, the stick must rub the bowl against the external side of the rim, e.g. adially\pressing outwards the bowl center. Indeed, experimenting with many bowls showed that they do not sing when rubbed internally. We start documenting this claim with experimental results from representative bowls, and then exploit our computational model in order to reproduce the observed behavior qualitatively. Our results are in good agreement with experiments, thereby demonstrating that internally excited bowls are dissipative and hence unable to sing.publishersversionpublishe

Fundamental rights in the reasoning of Judge Cunha Rodrigues

Com fundamento em textos do Conselheiro Cunha Rodrigues, o Autor encontra, na base da atual prevalência da jurisprudência jusfundamental do Tribunal de Justiça, o primordial estabelecimento dos princípios do primado e do efeito direto. Chama a atenção para as consequências de tipo funcionalista da jurisprudência do Tribunal de Justiça na relação entre a União e os Estados-Membros e no nascimento do conceito de cidadania da União, contribuindo para ultrapassar o que outrora ambicionou apenas ser a construção de um mercado comum. Por fim, constata o impasse da União após a criação da moeda única, dividida entre o aprofundamento do projeto político e o recuo intergovernamental, sustentado pelos eleitorados nacionais.Based on the writings of Judge Cunha Rodrigues, the author finds that due to the current prevalence of the case law of the Court of Justice on fundamental rights, the primordial establishment of the principles of primacy and direct effect. He draws attention to the functionalist consequences of the case law of the Court of Justice regarding the relationship between the Union and the Member States and the birth of the concept of Union citizenship, contributing to overcome what had once only aspired to be the construction of a common market. Finally, he notes the Union deadlock after the creation of the single currency, divided between developing the political project and the intergovernmental retreat, supported by national electorates
