    Underexplored: Perfectionism in Sexual Minorites

    Get PDF
Perfectionism is an aspect of one’s personality. Specifically, the trait of perfectionism is exemplified in a pursuit of flawlessness. Perfectionists set excessively high standards for their own performance and are overly critical of evaluations of the behavior of others (Smith et. al 2016). There are three individualized subtypes of perfectionism measured using the Big 3 Perfectionism Scale-Short Form (Feher et al., 2020). The first subtype of perfectionism is rigid perfectionism which is orientated around an individual’s sense of self-worth. The second subtype of perfectionism is self-critical perfectionism which is oriented around social expectations. Lastly, the third subtype of perfectionism is narcissistic perfectionism which is orientated around the belief that an individual is perfect. There has been previous research in the realm of perfectionism that looked at perfectionism’s association with life satisfaction and academic success (Gaudreau et al, 2022). However, there is a significant gap in the literature in exploring perfectionism in adults and in sexual minorities. My goal was to explore the relationship between perfectionism, and its subtypes, and minority stress in sexual minorities. It is hypothesized that those who score high on perfectionism will also predict having more minority stress relationship between perfectionism and minority stress in sexual minorities, because they might be affected by preconceived perfect stereotype strivings as members of a disenfranchised group. Total perfectionism and self-critical perfectionism were found to be significantly correlated with all the minority stressors and mental health. Whereas rigid perfectionism was found to be significantly correlated with all measures except outness disclosure. Comparatively, narcissistic perfectionism was found to be significantly correlated with all measures except outness disclosure and microaggressions. It was concluded from these findings that sexual minorities that are high in perfectionism are at risk for higher minority stress and poor mental health

The Rise of Noncommunicable Diseases in Latin America and the Caribbean: Challenges for Public Health Policies

    Get PDF
The health landscape in Latin America and the Caribbean is changing quickly. The region is undergoing a demographic and epidemiological transition in which health problems are highly concentrated on noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). In light of this, the region faces two main challenges: (1) develop cost-effective policies to prevent NCD risk factors, and (2) increase access to quality healthcare in a scenario in which a large share of the labor force is employed in the informal sector. This paper describes both alternative interventions to expand health insurance coverage and their tradeoff with labor informality and moral hazard problems. The paper also focuses on obesity as a case example of a NCD, and emphasizes how lack of knowledge along with self-control problems would lead people to make suboptimal decisions related to food consumption, which may later manifest in obesity problems.Centro de Estudios Distributivos, Laborales y Sociales (CEDLAS

Morphological variation of freshwater crabs Zilchiopsis collastinensis and Trichodactylus borellianus (Decapoda, Trichodactylidae) among localities from the middle Paraná River basin during different hydrological periods

Measures of hydrologic connectivity have been used extensively to describe spatial connections in riverine landscapes. Hydrologic fluctuations constitute an important macrofactor that regulates other environmental variables and can explain the distribution and abundance of organisms. We analysed morphological variations among individuals of two freshwater crab species, Zilchiopsis collastinensis and Trichodactylus borellianus, from localities of the middle Paraná River basin during two phases of the local hydrological regime. Specimens were sampled at sites (localities) of Paraná River, Saladillo Stream, Salado River and Coronda River when water levels were falling and rising. The conductivity, pH, temperature and geographical coordinates were recorded at each site. The dorsal cephalothorax of each crab was represented using 16 landmarks for Z. collastinensis and 14 landmarks for T. borellianus. The Canonical Variate Analyses showed differences in shape (for both species) among the crabs collected from the Paraná and Salado Rivers during the two hydrologic phases. We did not find a general distribution pattern for shape among the crab localities. During falling water, the shapes of Z. collastinensis were not related to latitude-longitude gradient (i.e., showing greater overlap in shape), while during rising water the shapes were ordered along a distributional gradient according to geographical location. Contrary, shapes of T. borellianus were related to latitude-longitude during falling water and were not related to distributional gradient during rising water. The cephalothorax shape showed, in general, no statistically significant covariations with environmental variables for either species. These results show that each freshwater crab species, from different localities of the middle Paraná River, remain connected; however, these connections change throughout the hydrologic regime of the floodplain system. This study was useful for delineating how the relation among shapes of crabs of localities varies during two phases of the hydrological regime and for estimating the connections and geographical patterns in the floodplain system.

Sulfanilic acid-modified chitosan mini-spheres and their application for lysozyme purification from egg white

A cation exchange matrix with zwitterionic and multimodal properties was synthesized by a simple reaction sequence coupling sulfanilic acid to a chitosan based support. The novel chromatographic matrix was physico-chemically characterized by ss-NMR and ζ potential, and its chromatographic performance was evaluated for lysozyme purification from diluted egg white. The maximum adsorption capacity, calculated according to Langmuir adsorption isotherm, was 50.07 ± 1.47 mg g-1 while the dissociation constant was 0.074 ± 0.012 mg mL-1 . The process for lysozyme purification from egg white was optimized, with 81.9% yield and a purity degree of 86.5%, according to RP-HPLC analysis. This work shows novel possible applications of chitosan based materials. The simple synthesis reactions combined with the simple mode of use of the chitosan matrix represents a novel method to purify proteins from raw starting materials.Fil: Hirsch, Daniela Belén.
