    Ontology selection: ontology evaluation on the real Semantic Web

    The increasing number of ontologies on the Web and the appearance of large scale ontology repositories has brought the topic of ontology selection in the focus of the semantic web research agenda. Our view is that ontology evaluation is core to ontology selection and that, because ontology selection is performed in an open Web environment, it brings new challenges to ontology evaluation. Unfortunately, current research regards ontology selection and evaluation as two separate topics. Our goal in this paper is to explore how these two tasks relate. In particular, we are interested to get a better understanding of the ontology selection task and filter out the challenges that it brings to ontology evaluation. We discuss requirements posed by the open Web environment on ontology selection, we overview existing work on selection and point out future directions.     Alamethicin self-assembling in lipid membranes: concentration dependence from pulsed EPR of spin labels

    The antimicrobial action of the peptide antibiotic alamethicin (Alm) is commonly related to peptide self-assembling resulting in the formation of voltage-dependent channels in bacterial membranes, which induces ion permeation. To obtain a deeper insight into the mechanism of channel formation, it is useful to know the dependence of self-assembling on peptide concentration. With this aim, we studied Alm F50/5 spin-labeled analogs in a model 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC) membrane, for peptide-to-lipid (P/L) ratios varying between 1/1500 and 1/100. Pulsed electron-electron double resonance (PELDOR) spectroscopy reveals that even at the lowest concentration investigated, the Alm molecules assemble into dimers. Moreover, under these conditions, electron spin echo envelope modulation (ESEEM) spectroscopy of D2O-hydrated membranes shows an abrupt change from the in-plane to the trans-membrane orientation of the peptide. Therefore, we hypothesize that dimer formation and peptide reorientation are concurrent processes and represent the initial step of peptide self-assembling. By increasing peptide concentration, higher oligomers are formed. A simple kinetic model of equilibrium among monomers, dimers, and pentamers allows for satisfactorily describing the experimental PELDOR data. The inter-label distances in the oligomers obtained from PELDOR experiments become better resolved with increasing P/L ratio, thus suggesting that the supramolecular organization of the higher-order oligomers becomes more defined

    Endogenous learning for green hydrogen in a sector-coupled energy model for Europe

    Many studies have shown that hydrogen could play a large role in the energy transition for hard-to-electrify sectors, but previous modelling has not included the necessary features to assess its role. They have either left out important sectors of hydrogen demand, ignored the temporal variability in the system or neglected the dynamics of learning effects. We address these limitations and consider learning-by-doing for the full green hydrogen production chain with different climate targets in a detailed European sector-coupled model. Here, we show that in the next 10 years a faster scale-up of electrolysis and renewable capacities than envisaged by the EU in the REPowerEU Plan can be cost-optimal to reach the strictest +1.5oC target. This reduces the costs for hydrogen production to 1.26 €/kg by 2050. Hydrogen production switches from grey to green hydrogen, omitting the option of blue hydrogen. If electrolysis costs are modelled without dynamic learning-by-doing, then the electrolysis scale-up is significantly delayed, while total system costs are overestimated by up to 13% and the levelised cost of hydrogen is overestimated by 67%

    Ecological and Sociodemographic Determinants of House Infestation by Triatoma infestans in Indigenous Communities of the Argentine Chaco

    The Gran Chaco ecoregion, a hotspot for Chagas and other neglected tropical diseases, is home to >20 indigenous peoples. Our objective was to identify the main ecological and sociodemographic determinants of house infestation and abundance of Triatoma infestans in traditional Qom populations including a Creole minority in Pampa del Indio, northeastern Argentina.A cross-sectional survey determined house infestation by timed-manual searches with a dislodging aerosol in 386 inhabited houses and administered questionnaires on selected variables before full-coverage insecticide spraying and annual vector surveillance. We fitted generalized linear models to two global models of domestic infestation and bug abundance, and estimated coefficients via multimodel inference with model averaging.Most Qom households were larger and lived in small-sized, recently-built, precarious houses with fewer peridomestic structures, and fewer livestock and poultry than Creoles’. Qom households had lower educational level and unexpectedly high residential mobility. House infestation (31.9%) was much lower than expected from lack of recent insecticide spraying campaigns and was spatially aggregated. Nearly half of the infested houses examined had infected vectors. Qom households had higher prevalence of domestic infestation (29.2%) than Creoles’ (10.0%), although there is large uncertainty around the adjusted OR. Factors with high relative importance for domestic infestation and/or bug abundance were refuge availability, distance to the nearest infested house, domestic insecticide use, indoor presence of poultry, residential overcrowding, and household educational level.Our study highlights the importance of sociodemographic determinants of domestic infestation such as overcrowding, education and proximity to the nearest infested house, and corroborates the role of refuge availability, domestic use of insecticides and household size. These factors may be used for designing improved interventions for sustainable disease control and risk stratification.     Bolivian women pathways in rural and urban areas of Mendoza (Argentina)

    El presente trabajo intenta explorar las potencialidades de un abordaje cuali-comparativo de las trayectorias diferenciales de mujeres bolivianas que residen actualmente en la provincia de Mendoza y se desempeñan en dos segmentos del mercado de trabajo destinados a migrantes recientes, como lo son la agricultura en contextos rurales y el comercio informal en espacios urbanos. Desde una perspectiva de género, analizamos las trayectorias migratorias y laborales de estas mujeres a partir de dos investigaciones realizadas entre 2010 y la actualidad en Ugarteche (distrito de Luján de Cuyo que convoca a trabajadores/as agrícolas) y Belgrano (distrito urbano de Guaymallén, departamento del Gran Mendoza, donde tiene un fuerte peso el comercio en ferias emplazadas en espacios públicos). Así, buscamos poner en diálogo algunos hallazgos de investigación basados en distintos contextos laborales y espaciales, que comparten algunas dimensiones relevantes,como la unidad temporal de investigación, la metodología empleada, los lugares de procedencia de las entrevistadas y sus grupos de edad.This paper attempts to explore the potential of a qualitative and comparative approach regarding the differential trayectories of Bolivian women who live in the province of Mendoza and work in two segments of the labor market aimed at recent immigrants, such as agriculture in rural contexts and informal trade in urban spaces. From a gender perspective, we analyzed the migratory and labor trajectories of these women from two researches, conducted between 2010 and today in Ugarteche (district of Luján de Cuyo that demands agricultural workers) and Belgrano (urban district of Guaymallén department of Mendoza, where trade it has a strong weight emplaced in public spaces).     Discrete typing units of Trypanosoma cruzi identified in rural dogs and cats in the humid Argentinean Chaco

    The discrete typing units (DTUs) of Trypanosoma cruzi that infect domestic dogs and cats have rarely been studied. With this purpose we conducted a cross-sectional xenodiagnostic survey of dog and cat populations residing in 2 infested rural villages in Pampa del Indio, in the humid Argentine Chaco. Parasites were isolated by culture from 44 dogs and 12 cats with a positive xenodiagnosis. DTUs were identified from parasite culture samples using a strategy based on multiple polymerase-chain reactions. TcVI was identified in 37 of 44 dogs and in 10 of 12 cats, whereas TcV was identified in 5 dogs and in 2 cats -a new finding for cats. No mixed infections were detected. The occurrence of 2 dogs infected with TcIII -classically found in armadillos- suggests a probable link with the local sylvatic transmission cycle involving Dasypus novemcinctus armadillos and a potential risk of human infection with TcIII. Our study reinforces the importance of dogs and cats as domestic reservoir hosts and sources of various DTUs infecting humans, and suggests a link between dogs and the sylvatic transmission cycle of TcIII.Fil: Enriquez, Gustavo Fabián.
