The cariogenic potential of milk
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)Reports differ concerning the cariogenic potential of milk. Some
authors indicate that plain milk can cause dental caries, while others believe
that the disease results from adding carbohydrates to the milk. Still
others suggest that milk has a protective effect and may contribute to caries
prevention.
The present study investigated the capability of human milk, plain
bovine milk, a milk formula, and milk with honey to produce caries-like
lesions in an environment which simulated the oral cavity.
Four groups of eight sound bicuspids each, which had been extracted for
orthodontic reasons, were mounted in a mouth simulator. The teeth and complete
apparatus were sterilized with ethylene oxide. The teeth were then inoculated
with human saliva and covered with linen cloth to facilitate bacterial
colonization. Each day the various groups of study teeth were exposed to one
of the four milk solutions during a 2, 4, or 8-hour period. After each period,
a sterile chemical solution simulating human saliva was dropped (8-12 ml/hr)
over the cloth to provide a mouth-like environment. A control group was not
exposed to a milk preparation.
The results indicate that after six weeks, all milk solution groups
showed unequivocal signs of decalcification, with an intensity proportional
to the period of exposure to the study solutions. Plain bovine milk produced
the least decalcification, followed in order by milk formula, human milk,
and milk and honey. It can be inferred, from these results, that milk itself,
without addition of extra carbohydrates, has the potential to produce dental
caries if left stagnant over the tooth surfaces for a sufficient time

Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness analysis in normal and glaucomatous dogs using laser polarimetry diagnosis
Once the glaucomatous damage is progressive and irreversible, studies on the glaucoma onset as well as its development have been discussed. It is known that the early diagnostisis is extremely important to the stabilization and treatment. The retinal nerve fibers layer thickness analysis ''in vivo'' was proposed in human ophthalmology in order to establish the thickness changing, due to glaucoma, and have shown that such findings can be even detected six years priors to the first clinical signs. However, in Veterinary Medicine, such data need to be investigated and discussed. This study used two groups of dogs, a glaucomatous group and a normal group, that had been submitted to the retinal nerve fibers layer analysis through the GDx Nerve Fiber Analyzer. Statistical data showed that the nerve fiber layer of the glaucomatous group was thinner (p < 0.05), sustaining ganglion cells axons loss in glaucomatous eyes, compared to normal eyes.
The exotic palm Roystonea oleracea (Jacq.) O. F. cook as a rural biotype for Rhodnius neglectus Lent, 1954, in Caçu, state of Goiás
IntroductionRhodnius neglectus is a triatomine that colonizes different palm species. In this study, we aimed to describe the presence of this triatomine bug in the royal palms (Roystonea oleracea) in a rural region of the State of Goiás.MethodsPalm infestation was investigated by dissecting the palms or by using live-bait traps.ResultsTwo palm trees were infested by R. neglectusnegative for Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent for Chagas disease. In the study area, R. neglectus is frequently found in households.ConclusionsThe adaptation of this species to palm trees introduced in Brazil for landscaping purposes poses another challenge for controlling the vectors of Chagas disease
