Fish-makhana (Euryale salisb) integration: a case study of sustainable aquafarming system in north Bihar
The paper deals with a technique to synchronize two crops, fish and makhana (Euryale ferox Salisb) in a pond. In such eco-friendly integration both crops are mutually benefited. Decomposed plant parts of makhana crop form organic matter that releases nutrients in the water to enhance plankton population. Organic detritus not only acts as food for bottom dwelling fishes (mrigal and common carp) but also provides a suitable substratum for the growth of zooplankton, insect larvae, nematodes and gastropods. Fishes contribute to the control of makhana pests. Their faecal matter acts as organic manure for makhana crop. Plankton population fluctuated between 1260 u/l to 4030 u/l in the control pond and 1630 u/l to 4722 u/l in the experimental pond. During the grand growth period of makhana crop (April to July) the dissolved oxygen content fluctuated between 5.02 mg/l to 6.68 mg/l in the covered areas and 6.04 mg/l to 6.92 mg/l in uncovered areas. Makhana leaves acting as blanket barrier over the water surface brought down the D.O. content in the covered areas of the pond. Free CO sub(2) content showed wider fluctuation in the experimental pond (25.2 mg/l to 30.9 mg/l) than in the control pond (25.1 mg/l to 28.6 mg/l). This could be due to decomposition of plant parts of the presiding crop lying as debris at the pond bottom. Autochthonous supply of nutrients enhanced the content of nitrogen, phosphorous and organic carbon in the soil of experimental pond. The experimental pond covering an area of 0.40 ha yielded 852 kg fish and 200 kg pops whereas the control pond covering the same area produced 777 kg fish only. The net profit per ha came out to be Rs.1,04,700 and Rs. 66,200 in integrated and non-integrated system respectively. Owing to crop diversification, the present integrated system was found to be more viable than the non-integrated system in terms of production and net profit

Macromolecular theory of solvation and structure in mixtures of colloids and polymers
The structural and thermodynamic properties of mixtures of colloidal spheres
and non-adsorbing polymer chains are studied within a novel general
two-component macromolecular liquid state approach applicable for all size
asymmetry ratios. The dilute limits, when one of the components is at infinite
dilution but the other concentrated, are presented and compared to field theory
and models which replace polymer coils with spheres. Whereas the derived
analytical results compare well, qualitatively and quantitatively, with
mean-field scaling laws where available, important differences from ``effective
sphere'' approaches are found for large polymer sizes or semi-dilute

Non-monotonic variation with salt concentration of the second virial coefficient in protein solutions
The osmotic virial coefficient of globular protein solutions is
calculated as a function of added salt concentration at fixed pH by computer
simulations of the ``primitive model''. The salt and counter-ions as well as a
discrete charge pattern on the protein surface are explicitly incorporated. For
parameters roughly corresponding to lysozyme, we find that first
decreases with added salt concentration up to a threshold concentration, then
increases to a maximum, and then decreases again upon further raising the ionic
strength. Our studies demonstrate that the existence of a discrete charge
pattern on the protein surface profoundly influences the effective interactions
and that non-linear Poisson Boltzmann and Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek
(DLVO) theory fail for large ionic strength. The observed non-monotonicity of
is compared to experiments. Implications for protein crystallization are

Study of Cabibbo Suppressed Decays of the Ds Charmed-Strange Meson involving a KS
We study the decay of Ds meson into final states involving a Ks and report
the discovery of Cabibbo suppressed decay modes Ds -> Kspi-pi+pi+ (179 +/- 36
events) and Ds -> Kspi+ (113 +/-26 events). The branching ratios for the new
modes are Gamma(Ds -> Kspi-pi+pi+)/Gamma(Ds -> KsK-pi+pi+) = 0.18 +/- 0.04 +/-
0.05 and Gamma(Ds -> Kspi+)/Gamma(Ds -> KsK+) = 0.104 +/- 0.024 +/- 0.013.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
Gravitational Radiation from Compact Binary Pulsars
An outstanding question in modern Physics is whether general relativity (GR)
is a complete description of gravity among bodies at macroscopic scales.
Currently, the best experiments supporting this hypothesis are based on
high-precision timing of radio pulsars. This chapter reviews recent advances in
the field with a focus on compact binary millisecond pulsars with white-dwarf
(WD) companions. These systems - if modeled properly - provide an unparalleled
test ground for physically motivated alternatives to GR that deviate
significantly in the strong-field regime. Recent improvements in observational
techniques and advances in our understanding of WD interiors have enabled a
series of precise mass measurements in such systems. These masses, combined
with high-precision radio timing of the pulsars, result to stringent
constraints on the radiative properties of gravity, qualitatively very

The Formation and Evolution of Massive Stellar Clusters in IC 4662
We present a multiwavelength study of the formation of massive stellar
clusters, their emergence from cocoons of gas and dust, and their feedback on
surrounding matter. Using data that span from radio to optical wavelengths,
including Spitzer and Hubble ACS observations, we examine the population of
young star clusters in the central starburst region of the irregular Wolf-Rayet
galaxy IC 4662. We model the radio-to-IR spectral energy distributions of
embedded clusters to determine the properties of their HII regions and dust
cocoons (sizes, masses, densities, temperatures), and use near-IR and optical
data with mid-IR spectroscopy to constrain the properties of the embedded
clusters themselves (mass, age, extinction, excitation, abundance). The two
massive star-formation regions in IC 4662 are excited by stellar populations
with ages of ~ 4 million years and masses of ~ 3 x 10^5 M_sun (assuming a
Kroupa IMF). They have high excitation and sub-solar abundances, and they may
actually be comprised of several massive clusters rather than the single
monolithic massive compact objects known as Super Star Clusters (SSCs). Mid-IR
spectra reveal that these clusters have very high extinctions, A_V ~ 20-25 mag,
and that the dust in IC 4662 is well-mixed with the emitting gas, not in a

Acoustic Diagnostics of Electrical Origin Fault Modes with Readily Available Consumer-Grade Sensors
Acoustic diagnostics, traditionally associated with mechanical fault modes, can potentially solve a wider range of monitoring applications. Typically, fault modes are induced purposefully by the researcher through physical component damage whilst the system is shutdown. This paper presents low-cost real-time fault diagnostics of a previously unreported acute electrical origin fault that manifests sporadically during system operation with no triggering intervention. A suitability study into acoustic measurements from readily available consumer-grade sensors for low-cost real-time diagnostics of audible faults, and a brief overview of the theory and configuration of the wavelet packet transform (including optimal wavelet selection methods) and empirical mode decomposition processing algorithms is also included. The example electrical origin fault studied here is an unpredictable current instability arising with the PWM-controller of a BrushLess DC motor. Experimental trials positively detect 99.9 % of the 1160 resultant high-bandwidth torque transients using acoustic measurements from a USB microphone and a smartphone. While the use of acoustic techniques for detecting emerging electrical origin faults remains largely unexplored, the techniques demonstrated here can be readily adopted for the prevention of catastrophic failure of drive and power electronic components
