    Assessment of radiographic screen-film systems: a comparison between the use of a microdensitometer and a drum film digitiser

    A high-end drum film digitiser (Tango, Germany) and a calibrated linear microdensitometer developed by PTB were used to assess the modulation transfer function (MTF) and the noise power spectra (NPS) of 3 mammographic screen film systems at optical density levels of 0.8, 1.5 and 2.5. The use of a drum scanner to assess MTF and NPS data appears to be adequate but requires an appropriate characterisation of the scanner to verify its internal noise level and its MTF. It is further necessary to calibrate the scanner output in terms of visual diffuse optical densities. Processing of two-dimensional digital data of grating images need to be more strictly defined for accurate MTF measurements of screen-film systems. Nevertheless, even now it seems to be feasible to use commercially available high-end and well calibrated scanners to assess screen film systems. This is especially important for quality assurance purposes because important parameters of screen film systems such like MTF and NPS can now be determined without using sophisticated microdensitometers which are not commercially availabl

    Fluoroscopy-guided procedures in cardiology: is patient exposure being reduced over time?

    The number of fluoroscopy-guided procedures in cardiology is increasing over time and it is appropriate to wonder whether technological progress or change of techniques is influencing patient exposure. The aim of this study is to examine whether patient dose has been decreasing over the years. Patient dose data of more than 7700 procedures were collected from two cardiology centres. A steady increase in the patient dose over the years was observed in both the centres for the two cardiological procedures included in this study. Significant increase in dose was also observed after the installation of a flat-panel detector. The increasing use of radial access may lead to an increase in the patient exposure. The monitoring of dose data over time showed a considerable increase in the patient exposure over time. Actions have to be taken towards dose reduction in both the centre

    The alpine Swiss-French airborne gravity survey

    In February 1998, a regional-scale, airborne gravity survey was carried out over the French Occidental Alps within the framework of the GéoFrance 3-D research program.The survey consisted of 18 NS and 16 EW oriented lines with a spacing of 10 and 20 km respectively, covering the whole of the Western French Alps (total area: 50 000 km2; total distance of lines flown: 10 000 km). The equipment was mounted in a medium-size aircraft (DeHavilland Twin Otter) flowing at a constant altitude of 5100 m a.s.l, and at a mean ground speed of about 280 km h−1. Gravity was measured using a LaCoste & Romberg relative, air/sea gravimeter (type SA) mounted on a laser gyro stabilized platform. Data from 5 GPS antennae located on fuselage and wings and 7 ground-based GPS reference stations were used to determine position and aircraft induced accelerations.The gravimeter passband was derived by comparing the vertical accelerations provided by the gravimeter with those estimated from the GPS positions. This comparison showed that the gravimeter is not sensitive to very short wavelength aircraft accelerations, and therefore a simplified formulation for computing airborne gravity measurements was developed. The intermediate and short wavelength, non-gravitational accelerations were eliminated by means of digital, exponential low-pass filters (cut-off wavelength: 16 km). An important issue in airborne gravimetry is the reliability of the airborne gravity surveys when compared to ground surveys. In our studied area, the differences between the airborne-acquired Bouguer anomaly and the ground upward-continued Bouguer anomaly of the Alps shows a good agreement: the rms of these differences is equal to 7.68 mGal for a spatial resolution of 8 km. However, in some areas with rugged topography, the amplitudes of those differences have a striking correlation with the topography. We then argue that the choice of an appropriate density (reduction by a factor of 10 per cent) for computing the ground topographic corrections over the highest mountains, results in significantly reducing the differences between airborne and ground upward-continued Bouguer anomalies, which shows that some of the misfit stems from errors in the ground dat

    Patient doses in CT examinations in Switzerland: implementation of national diagnostic reference levels

    Diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) were established for 21 indication-based CT examinations for adults in Switzerland. One hundred and seventy-nine of 225 computed tomography (CT) scanners operated in hospitals and private radiology institutes were audited on-site and patient doses were collected. For each CT scanner, a correction factor was calculated expressing the deviation of the measured weighted computed tomography dose index (CTDI) to the nominal weighted CTDI as displayed on the workstation. Patient doses were corrected by this factor providing a realistic basis for establishing national DRLs. Results showed large variations in doses between different radiology departments in Switzerland, especially for examinations of the petrous bone, pelvis, lower limbs and heart. This indicates that the concept of DRLs has not yet been correctly applied for CT examinations in clinical routine. A close collaboration of all stakeholders is mandatory to assure an effective radiation protection of patients. On-site audits will be intensified to further establish the concept of DRLs in Switzerlan

    Trypanosoma cruzi Induces B Cells That Regulate the CD4+ T Cell Response

    Trypanosoma cruzi infection induces a polyclonal B cell proliferative response characterized by maturation to plasma cells, excessive generation of germinal centers, and secretion of parasite-unrelated antibodies. Although traditionally reduced to the humoral response, several infectious and non-infectious models revealed that B lymphocytes could regulate and play crucial roles in cellular responses. Here, we analyze the trypomastigote-induced effect on B cells, their effects on CD4+ T cells, and their correlation with in vivo findings. The trypomastigotes were able to induce the proliferation and the production of IL-10 or IL-6 of naïve B cells in co-culture experiments. Also, we found that IL-10-producing B220lo cells were elicited in vivo. We also found up-regulated expression of FasL and PD-L1, proteins involved in apoptosis induction and inhibition of TCR signaling, and of BAFF and APRIL mRNAs, two B-cell growth factors. Interestingly, it was observed that IL-21, which plays a critical role in regulatory B cell differentiation, was significantly increased in B220+/IL-21+ in in vivo infections. This is striking since the secretion of IL-21 is associated with T helper follicular cells. Furthermore, trypomastigote-stimulated B-cell conditioned medium dramatically reduced the proliferation and increased the apoptotic rate on CD3/CD28 activated CD4+ T cells, suggesting the development of effective regulatory B cells. In this condition, CD4+ T cells showed a marked decrease in proliferation and viability with marginal IL-2 or IFNγ secretion, which is counterproductive with an efficient immune response against T. cruzi. Altogether, our results show that B lymphocytes stimulated with trypomastigotes adopt a particular phenotype that exerts a strong regulation of this T cell compartment by inducing apoptosis, arresting cell division, and affecting the developing of a proinflammatory response.Fil: Somoza, Martín.     Mass detection on mammograms: signal variations and performance changes for human and model observers

    We studied the influence of signal variability on human and model observer performances for a detection task with mammographic backgrounds and computer generated clustered lumpy backgrounds (CLB). We used synthetic yet realistic masses and backgrounds that have been validated by radiologists during previous studies, ensuring conditions close to the clinical situation. Four trained non-physician observers participated in two-alternative forced-choice (2-AFC) experiments. They were asked to detect synthetic masses superimposed on real mammographic backgrounds or CLB. Separate experiments were conducted with sets of benign and malignant masses. Results under the signal-known-exactly (SKE) paradigm were compared with signal-known-statistically (SKS) experiments. In the latter case, the signal was chosen randomly for each of the 1,400 2-AFC trials (image pairs) among a set of 50 masses with similar dimensions, and the observers did not know which signal was present. Human observers' results were then compared with model observers (channelized Hotelling with Difference-of-Gaussian and Gabor channels) in the same experimental conditions. Results show that the performance of the human observers does not differ significantly when benign masses are superimposed on real images or on CLB with locally matched gray level mean and standard deviation. For both benign and malignant masses, the performance does not differ significantly between SKE and SKS experiments, when the signals' dimensions do not vary throughout the experiment. However, there is a performance drop when the SKS signals' dimensions vary from 5.5 to 9.5 mm in the same experiment. Noise level in the model observers can be adjusted to reproduce human observers' proportion of correct answers in the 2-AFC task within 5% accuracy for most condition

    Kaposi’s Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus-Encoded Viral IL-6 (vIL-6) Enhances Immunoglobulin Class-Switch Recombination

    Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is an oncogenic gamma-herpesvirus that causes AIDS-associated Kaposi sarcoma (KS) and several lymphoproliferative disorders. During the humoral immune response antigen-activated mature B cells acquire functional diversification by immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgH) class-switch recombination (CSR). CSR is initiated by activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) which targets highly repetitive switch (S)-regions to mediate DNA double-stranded breaks (DSBs) in the IgH locus facilitating intramolecular recombination. Here we show that in the context of cytokine stimulation, CSR is enhanced in murine B cells exposed only to replication-competent KSHV in an environment of KSHV infection, which coincided with elevated AID transcripts. Using murine splenic B cells and the mouse lymphoma CH12F3-2 CSR system, we identified that vIL-6, but not murine IL-6, increased class-switching, which correlated with upregulated AID expression. Together, these data suggest a regulatory role for KSHV vIL-6 in functionally modulating B cell biology by promoting CSR, which may in part explain how KSHV infection influences humoral immunity and affect KSHV pathogenesis

    Experiencias educativas en el uso de TIC en la educación superior en la sede andina de la Universidad Nacional de Rio Negro

    En este trabajo se presentan experiencias en el uso de recursos de TIC en la educación universitaria de alumnos de primer año en la sede Andina de la Universidad Nacional de Río Negro (UNRN). Desde el año 2012 un grupo de docentes del Taller de Informática y TICs busca innovar y sumar estrategias de enseñanza para el dictado de clases tendientes a actualizar los contenidos y a acrecentar el aprovechamiento de las técnicas que mejor les ayuden a los alumnos en su desarrollo como estudiantes universitarios. El desafío no es menor, si se tiene en cuenta que el dictado del Taller es transversal a todas las carreras de la Universidad, a excepción de las Ingenierías. Se discutirán los recursos informáticos empleados, la composición de los grupos de estudiantes y las producciones obtenidas. Mostraremos que el uso de la plataforma virtual de aprendizaje y de los entornos colaborativos, en una modalidad de enseñanza mixta (Blended Learning), ayudan a compartir la realización de tareas, permitiendo incorporar nuevas formas de trabajo para docentes y estudiantes, con importantes consecuencias tales como la valoración del trabajo colaborativo que los alumnos podrán capitalizar luego en su carrera, contribuyendo a reducir de la deserción estudiantil.Eje: Tecnología informática aplicada en educaciónRed de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI
