Examples and Specifications that Prove a Point: Identifying Elaborative and Argumentative Discourse Relations
Examples and specifications occur frequently in text, but not much is known about how they function in discourse and how readers interpret them. Looking at how they’re annotated in existing discourse corpora, we find that annotators often disagree on these types of relations; specifically, there is disagreement about whether these relations are elaborative (additive) or argumentative (pragmatic causal). To investigate how readers interpret examples and specifications, we conducted a crowdsourced discourse annotation study. The results show that these relations can indeed have two functions: they can be used to both illustrate/specify a situation and serve as an argument for a claim. These findings suggest that examples and specifications can have multiple simultaneous readings. We discuss the implications of these results for discourse annotation. 
How compatible are our discourse annotation frameworks? Insights from mapping RST-DT and PDTB annotations
Discourse-annotated corpora are an important resource for the community, but they are often annotated according to different frameworks. This makes joint usage of the annotations difficult, preventing researchers from searching the corpora in a unified way, or using all annotated data jointly to train computational systems. Several theoretical proposals have recently been made for mapping the relational labels of different frameworks to each other, but these proposals have so far not been validated against existing annotations. The two largest discourse relation annotated resources, the Penn Discourse Treebank and the Rhetorical Structure Theory Discourse Treebank, have however been annotated on the same texts, allowing for a direct comparison of the annotation layers. We propose a method for automatically aligning the discourse segments, and then evaluate existing mapping proposals by comparing the empirically observed against the proposed mappings. Our analysis highlights the influence of segmentation on subsequent discourse relation labelling, and shows that while agreement between frameworks is reasonable for explicit relations, agreement on implicit relations is low. We identify several sources of systematic discrepancies between the two annotation schemes and discuss consequences for future annotation and for usage of the existing resources
The Coupled Cluster Method in Hamiltonian Lattice Field Theory: SU(2) Glueballs
The glueball spectrum within the Hamiltonian formulation of lattice gauge
theory (without fermions) is calculated for the gauge group SU(2) and for two
spatial dimensions.
The Hilbert space of gauge-invariant functions of the gauge field is
generated by its parallel-transporters on closed paths along the links of the
spatial lattice. The coupled cluster method is used to determine the spectrum
of the Kogut-Susskind Hamiltonian in a truncated basis. The quality of the
description is studied by computing results from various truncations, lattice
regularisations and with an improved Hamiltonian.
We find consistency for the mass ratio predictions within a scaling region
where we obtain good agreement with standard lattice Monte Carlo results.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
Descriptively Adequate and Cognitively Plausible? Validating Distinctions between Types of Coherence Relations
A central issue in linguistics concerns the relationship between theories and evidence in data. We investigate this issue in the field of discourse coherence, and particularly the study of coherence relations such as causal and contrastive. Proposed inventories of coherence relations differ greatly in the type and number of proposed relations. Such proposals are often validated by focusing on either the descriptive adequacy (researcher’s intuitions on textual interpretations) or the cognitive plausibility of distinctions (empirical research on cognition). We argue that both are important, and note that the concept of cognitive plausibility is in need of a concrete definition and quantifiable operationalization. This contribution focuses on how the criterion of cognitive plausibility can be operationalized and presents a systematic validation approach to evaluate discourse frameworks. This is done by detailing how various sources of evidence can be used to support or falsify distinctions between coherence relational labels. Finally, we present methodological issues regarding verification and falsification that are of importance to all discourse researchers studying the relationship between theory and data
Fast evaluation of appointment schedules for outpatients in health care
We consider the problem of evaluating an appointment schedule for outpatients in a hospital. Given a fixed-length session during which a physician sees K patients, each patient has to be given an appointment time during this session in advance. When a patient arrives on its appointment, the consultations of the previous patients are either already finished or are still going on, which respectively means that the physician has been standing idle or that the patient has to wait, both of which are undesirable. Optimising a schedule according to performance criteria such as patient waiting times, physician idle times, session overtime, etc. usually requires a heuristic search method involving a huge number of repeated schedule evaluations. Hence, the aim of our evaluation approach is to obtain accurate predictions as fast as possible, i.e. at a very low computational cost. This is achieved by (1) using Lindley's recursion to allow for explicit expressions and (2) choosing a discrete-time (slotted) setting to make those expression easy to compute. We assume general, possibly distinct, distributions for the patient's consultation times, which allows us to account for multiple treatment types, as well as patient no-shows. The moments of waiting and idle times are obtained. For each slot, we also calculate the moments of waiting and idle time of an additional patient, should it be appointed to that slot. As we demonstrate, a graphical representation of these quantities can be used to assist a sequential scheduling strategy, as often used in practice
Morphometric and Meristic Characterization of Native Chame Fish (Dormitator latifrons) in Ecuador Using Multivariate Analysis
Ecuador, a country exhibiting large developments in fish farming, has a great variety of freshwater native fish. Among these fish is the Dormitator latifrons or chame, which has characteristics that make its farming prone to occur at a quite-developed stage. However, morphological characterization is required to establish a conservation program. In this study, 300 chames were captured in the Manabi province (Ecuador) to analyze their morphostructural model and to evaluate the effects of sex and the production system through multivariant techniques. The fish from the farm presented morphological measurements that were statistically (p 0.05). The percentage of correct adscription was 84%, with larger errors in wild fish. The morphostructural model had a high homogeneity, with 89.95% significant correlations (p < 0.05), and wild male and female fish were more homogeneous. The farm fish were larger because of the higher food availability. Moreover, the species exhibited sexual dimorphism, although there were no great differences in the morphometric measurements. This study shows the great biodiversity that naturally exists in Ecuadorian rivers. Therefore, it is of great interest to develop a chame breeding and conservation program
The orally administered P-glycoprotein inhibitor R101933 does not alter the plasma pharmacokinetics of docetaxel
This Phase I study was performed to assess the feasibility of combining
docetaxel with the new P-glycoprotein inhibitor R101933 and to determine
the dose limiting toxicity of this combination. Fifteen patients received
oral R101933 alone at a dose escalated from 200 to 300 mg twice daily
(b.i.d.; cycle 0), an escalating i.v. dose of docetaxel (60, 75, and 100
mg/m2) as a 1-h infusion (cycle 1), and the combination (cycle 2 and
further). Dose limiting toxicity consisting of mucositis and neutropenic
fever was reached at the combination of docetaxel, 100 mg/m2, and R101933,
300 mg b.i.d., and the maximum tolerated dose was established at
docetaxel, 100 mg/m2, and R101933, 200 mg b.i.d. Plasma concentrations of
R101933 achieved in patients were in the same range as required in
preclinical rodent models to overcome paclitaxel resistance. The plasma
pharmacokinetics of docetaxel were not influenced by the R101933 regimen
at any dose level tested, as indicated by plasma clearance values of 26.5
+/- 7.78 liters/h/m2 and 23.4 +/- 4.52 liters/h/m2 (P = 0.15) in cycles 1
and 2, respectively. These findings indicate that the contribution of a
P-glycoprotein inhibitor to the activity of anticancer chemotherapy can
now be assessed in patients for the first time independent of its effect
on drug pharmacokinetics
Pk/pd of morphine for postoperative analgesia after coronary artery bypass grafting : Intrathecal morphine significantly reduces drug consumption
The aim of the present study was to evaluate intrathecal morphine outcome on postoperative pain and apply pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic model to justify morphine consumption, plasma concentration and pain intensity during coronary artery bypass grafting surgery. Thirty six patients were prospectively randomized for general anesthesia and allocated in the control or morphine (400 μg intrathecal) group. At postoperative period, all patients received a loading dose of morphine (1 mg bolus), and then patient-controlled analgesia device was installed and delivered until 36 h. Blood samples was collected from venous catheter, morphine plasma concentrations were determined by liquid chromatography and pain intensity evaluated by visual analogue scale. Drug dose requirements and pain intensity at rest were different between groups. No kinetic parameters difference was obtained. Maximum effect model and hysteresis curve were proposed to correlate drug plasma concentration versus time, drug consumption and pain intensity. Central Santa Catarina coastal dunefields chronology and their relation to relative sea level and climatic changes
During the past decades, there have been contrarian explanations for the formation and stabilization of coastal dunefields: while many authors believe the dunes formation would be enhanced by falling sea level, others argue that a rising or stable sea level context would be favorable. For Brazilian coastal dunefields, the second hypothesis seems to be more consistent with the luminescence ages found so far; however, most of these data were obtained without using the SAR protocol. Another point of concern is the role of climate change in the aeolian system, which is still not very clear. The aim of this paper is to try to clarify these two questions. To this end, five coastal dunefields were selected in central Santa Catarina coast. The remote sensing and dating results allowed the discrimination and mapping of at least four aeolian generations. Their age distribution in relation to the global curve of relative sea level variation during the Late Pleistocene allows us to suggest that the formation of Aeolian dunefields in the coastal context is supported by stable relative sea level. However, relative sea level is not the only determinant for the formation and preservation of the aeolian coastal dunes. Evidences of climatic control indicate that the initiation of dunefields would be favored by periods of less humidity while their stabilization would occur preferably during the periods of rain intensification, connected to monsoon activity
