This article intends to discuss a central aspect of the writings of the anthropologist Egon Schaden about the guarani populations: their relation with the non-indigenous world. At first, I intend to reconstitute briefly the general argument of Schaden about the topic, which he diagnoses as an “insolvable dilemma” for which the “only possible alternative” would be, “the resignation” of the Guarani (Schaden, 1969: 117). At second, I propose to confront this diagnosis by showing that, far for resignation, the Guarani population managed to construct important alternatives at their relationships with white people that were not predicted by those kinds of analysis. To support this point of view descriptive and theoretically, I would bring the reflections of the kaiowá professor Eliel Benites, founded in his master’s dissertation (Benites, 2014) which points another indigenous way to deal with the white people that it was not properly underlined by Schaden because his analysis was based on the notion of acculturation.O presente artigo visa discutir um aspecto central dos escritos do antropólogo Egon Schaden sobre as populações guarani: a relação com o mundo não indígena.

Objective: To investigate the accuracy of chest auscultation in detecting abnormal respiratory mechanics. Methods: We evaluated 200 mechanically ventilated patients in the immediate postoperative period after cardiac surgery. We assessed respiratory system mechanics - static compliance of the respiratory system (Cst,rs) and respiratory system resistance (R,rs) - after which two independent examiners, blinded to the respiratory system mechanics data, performed chest auscultation. Results: Neither decreased/abolished breath sounds nor crackles were associated with decreased Cst,rs (≤ 60 mL/cmH2O), regardless of the examiner. The overall accuracy of chest auscultation was 34.0% and 42.0% for examiners A and B, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of chest auscultation for detecting decreased/abolished breath sounds or crackles were 25.1% and 68.3%, respectively, for examiner A, versus 36.4% and 63.4%, respectively, for examiner B. Based on the judgments made by examiner A, there was a weak association between increased R,rs (≥ 15 cmH2O/L/s) and rhonchi or wheezing (ϕ = 0.31, p < 0.01). The overall accuracy for detecting rhonchi or wheezing was 89.5% and 85.0% for examiners A and B, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity for detecting rhonchi or wheezing were 30.0% and 96.1%, respectively, for examiner A, versus 10.0% and 93.3%, respectively, for examiner B. Conclusions: Chest auscultation does not appear to be an accurate diagnostic method for detecting abnormal respiratory mechanics in mechanically ventilated patients in the immediate postoperative period after cardiac surgery

Identification of Candidate Genes for Reactivity in Guzerat (Bos indicus) Cattle: A Genome-Wide Association Study

[EN] Temperament is fundamental to animal production due to its direct influence on the animalherdsman relationship. When compared to calm animals, the aggressive, anxious or fearful ones exhibit less weight gain, lower reproductive efficiency, decreased milk production and higher herd maintenance costs, all of which contribute to reduced profits. However, temperament is a trait that is complex and difficult to assess. Recently, a new quantitative system, REATEST®, for assessing reactivity, a phenotype of temperament, was developed. Herein, we describe the results of a Genome-wide association study for reactivity, assessed using REATEST® with a sample of 754 females from five dual-purpose (milk and meat production) Guzerat (Bos indicus) herds. Genotyping was performed using a 50k SNP chip and a twostep mixed model approach (Grammar-Gamma) with a one-by-one marker regression was used to identify QTLs. QTLs for reactivity were identified on chromosomes BTA1, BTA5, BTA14, and BTA25. Five intronic and two intergenic markers were significantly associated with reactivity. POU1F1, DRD3, VWA3A, ZBTB20, EPHA6, SNRPF and NTN4 were identified as candidate genes. Previous QTL reports for temperament traits, covering areas surrounding the SNPs/genes identified here, further corroborate these associations. The seven genes identified in the present study explain 20.5% of reactivity variance and give a better understanding of temperament biology. Retelling the recent evolution of genetic diversity for Guzerá: Inferences from LD decay, runs of homozygosity and Ne over the generations

[EN] Genetic diversity is the one of the most important issues in conservation studies of livestock breeds or endangered species. In the present study, we tested the feasibility of describing the recent evolution in genetic diversity through genome-wide SNP genotyping and estimates of linkage disequilibrium decay patterns, effective population size, inbreeding coefficient based on runs of homozygosity and population structure. We choose the bovine indicine breed Guzerá because it has suffered recent bottlenecks which have been registered historically. A sample of 1036 females was genotyped using Illumina BovineSNP50. A resampling strategy was applied to correct for sampling biases caused by the population structure in herds, and by the extensive use of some sires for artificial reproduction. A subsample of 210 animals and 32,806 markers with MAF > 0.01 was used. Very low linkage disequilibrium was detected for distances greater than 120 Kb between two markers. Furthermore, three points of decrease in effective population size between generations were detected, which coincide with the historically registered bottlenecks. The inbreeding coefficient, based on runs of homozygosity, confirmed a strong contribution of the last 20–30 generations to current inbreeding. In the population structure analysis, the most probable number of sub-populations is 2, reflecting selection purpose (beef or dual-purpose). Taken together, these results allow a retelling of the recent evolution of this breed. The strategy described here will be useful for other breeds or even species for which a careful historical registry is not available for conservation proposals.SIWe thank to the farmers, who allowed the development of this project in their farms. Thie objective of this work was to evaluate yield, quality and postharvest conservation of tomatoes, to compare the effects promoted by the alcobaça (norA), nonripening (nor) and ripening inhibitor (rin) alleles, in heterozygosis, singly or in double combinations on hybrid tomato fruits. Ten treatments were evaluated: seven experimental nearly isogenic hybrids of FloraDade x Tropic background or reciprocal with nor+/norA, rin+/rin, nor+/nor, nor/norA, nor+/norA rin+/rin and nor+/nor rin+/rin genotypes, and three commercial checks (FloraDade, Tropic and Carmen F1). Oppositely to the genotypes rin+/rin and nor+/nor, the genotype nor+/norA did not significantly extend the firmness of the fruits in postharvest. The double mutant genotypes norA/nor, nor+/norA rin+/rin and nor+/nor rin+/rin were efficient in delaying firmness loss and the evolution of fruits colouring; the effects of loci nor+/norA and rin+/rin, together, underwent significant deviations relatively to the sum of these loci effects, when acting singly, in the sense of enhancing those delays. Use of heterozygous hybrids in the double combinations among loci norA, nor and rin proved advantageous for providing firm fruits with a longer postharvest lifetime, as compared with the hybrids carrying these loci singly. The quality of double mutant fruits was not restricted by the delay in the evolution of red coloration

Both “illness and temptation of the enemy”: melancholy, the medieval patient and the writings of King Duarte of Portugal (r. 1433–38)

    Get PDF
Recent historians have rehabilitated King Duarte of Portugal, previously maligned and neglected, as an astute ruler and philosopher. There is still a tendency, however, to view Duarte as a depressive or a hypochondriac, due to his own description of his melancholy in his advice book, the Loyal Counselor. This paper reassesses Duarte's writings, drawing on key approaches in the history of medicine, such as narrative medicine and the history of the patient. It is important to take Duarte's views on his condition seriously, placing them in the medical and theological contexts of his time and avoiding modern retrospective diagnosis. Duarte's writings can be used to explore the impact of plague, doubt and death on the life of a well-educated and conscientious late-medieval ruler
