Retreat of Mediterranean Glaciers since the Little Ice Age: Case Study of Ghiacciaio del Calderone, Central Apennines, Italy

    Get PDF
Ghiacciaio del Calderone is the only glacier in the Italian Apennines and the southernmost glacier in Europe. In this paper, the authors present a tentative synthesis of the evolution of the glacier, with a particular focus on evaluating the variations in area and thickness ranging from the end of the Little Ice Age to the present. The analysis was performed in a GIS environment, using available data for georeferation (mainly from recent topographic maps) and for the reconstruction (from historical documents and old topographic maps) of the variations of the glacier in the last two centuries. The resulting values, reconstructed and/or calculated, covering the period since the end of the Little Ice Age, of about 36 m of ice thickness and of about 59,000 m2 of ice surface area represent the glacier loss by 1990

The article details some aspects of the Roman societas, which are analyzed not only based on the traditional Roman sources, but also according to the new breakthroughs and the modern Roman doctrine, aiming at the revision of previous concepts and studies of comparative law. It describes the origin and the most likely evolution of the partnership agreement in the Roman Law and its main characteristics. In the light of this, the article analyzes the main rules that govern the term of administration and the responsibilities of the managing partners. In particular, it examines the arguments presented by the diverse lines of thought concerning the criteria of responsibility in the classical period and the rules in the Justinian Code. Finally, the author discourses on the influence of the societas intuitus personae nature in the social relations

Lumican is overexpressed in lung adenocarcinoma pleural effusions.

Adenocarcinoma (AdC) is the most common lung cancer subtype and is often associated with pleural effusion (PE). Its poor prognosis is attributable to diagnostic delay and lack of effective treatments and there is a pressing need in discovering new biomarkers for early diagnosis or targeted therapies. To date, little is known about lung AdC proteome. We investigated protein expression of lung AdC in PE using the isobaric Tags for Relative and Absolute Quantification (iTRAQ) approach to identify possible novel diagnostic/prognostic biomarkers. This provided the identification of 109 of lung AdC-related proteins. We further analyzed lumican, one of the overexpressed proteins, in 88 resected lung AdCs and in 23 malignant PE cell-blocks (13 lung AdCs and 10 non-lung cancers) using immunohistochemistry. In AdC surgical samples, lumican expression was low in cancer cells, whereas it was strong and diffuse in the stroma surrounding the tumor. However, lumican expression was not associated with tumor grade, stage, and vascular/pleural invasion. None of the lung cancer cell-blocks showed lumican immunoreaction, whereas those of all the other tumors were strongly positive. Finally, immunoblotting analysis showed lumican expression in both cell lysate and conditioned medium of a fibroblast culture but not in those of A549 lung cancer cell line. PE is a valid source of information for proteomic analysis without many of the restrictions of plasma. The high lumican levels characterizing AdC PEs are probably due to its release by the fibroblasts surrounding the tumor. Despite the role of lumican in lung AdC is still elusive, it could be of diagnostic value

This study is part of the Cabo Frio Upwelling Ecosystem Integrated Project and aims to verify the specific composition, distribution and diets of asteroids of the Cabo Frio continental shelf, RJ. Asteroide were collected monthly from January 1986 to December 1988 by a 10 m otter-trawl. Twenty minute hauls were done along the 30, 45 and 60 m isobates off Maçambaba Beach. Water and sediment samples were obtained at each depth. Prey denaities were assessed by a Van-Veen grab (0, 1 m2 ) in January, 1988. Asteroids were measured, weighed and aborally cut to analyse the stomach contents. Colder water (below 18°C) was observed, mainly during the summer. Sediment changed according to the depth: medium sand at 30 m to fine sand at 60 m. Five species were collected: Astropecten cingulatus Sladen, 1889, A. armatus brasiliensis Müller & Troschel, 1842, Luidia ludwigi scotti Bell, 1917, L. alternata (Say, 1825) and Tethyaster vestitus (Say, 1825). The first three were the most frequent and abundant. Species bathymetrical distribution presented different patterns: A. armatus brasiliensis was more abundant at 30 m, A. cingulatus at 60 m, but at 45 m the three species coexisted with similar numbers. The highest densities were observed during the upwelling periods. Asteroid diets were significantly different both at each depth and among species at 45 m, where they coexist. The results suggest a partition of feeding resources, mainly at 45 m. Intraspecific diet differences were lese evident at 30 and 60 m. A. armatus brasiliensis showed a larger niche breadth. The feeding niche of A. cingulatus seems to be part of A. armatus brasiliensis niche. L. ludwigi scotti showed a smaller feeding spectrum, eating mainly Abra lioica. The potential competition among species is suggested, but was not possible to confirm.

In this paper, the design of an on-chip Fault Detection and Diagnosis System for Condition Based Maintenance of electromechanical actuators is presented. The proposed system is based on signal processing algorithms integrated in a customized Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC). The design was synthesized using a 90nm CMOS standard cell library. As a case study, post-synthesis simulations were performed using signals acquired from a real electromechanical valve, using torque and vibration sensors considering both fault-free and defective situations for the actuator. Results show the effectiveness of the system in performing real-time fault detection and identification, with low power consumption and low silicon area utilization
