A precessing jet model for the PN K 3-35: simulated radio-continuum emission
The bipolar morphology of the planetary nebula (PN) K 3-35 observed in
radio-continuum images was modelled with 3D hydrodynamic simulations with the
adaptive grid code yguazu-a. We find that the observed morphology of this PN
can be reproduced considering a precessing jet evolving in a dense AGB
circumstellar medium, given by a mass loss rate
\dot{M}_{csm}=5x10^{-5}M_{\odot}/yr and a terminal velocity v_{w}=10 km/s.
Synthetic thermal radio-continuum maps were generated from numerical results
for several frequencies. Comparing the maps and the total fluxes obtained from
the simulations with the observational results, we find that a model of
precessing dense jets, where each jet injects material into the surrounding CSM
at a rate \dot{M}_j=2.8x10^{-4} {M_{\odot}/yr (equivalent to a density of
8x10^{4} {cm}^{-3}, a velocity of 1500 km/s, a precession period of 100 yr, and
a semi-aperture precession angle of 20 degrees agrees well with the
observations.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted to MNRA

Evolving supernova remnants in multiphase interstellar media
We performed three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations to study the evolution of a supernova remnant (SNR) in a turbulent neutral atomic interstellar medium. The media used as background shares characteristics with the Solar neighbourhood and the SNR has mass and energy similar to those of a Type Ia object. Our initial conditions consist of dense clouds in a diluted medium, with the main difference between simulations being the average magnitude of the magnetic field. We measured amplifications of the magnetic energy of up to 34 per cent, and we generated synthetic maps that illustrate how the same object can show different apparent geometries and physical properties when observed through different lines of sight.Fil: Villagran Azuara, Marco Adrian.
FoxK mediates TGF-β signalling during midgut differentiation in flies
Inductive signals across germ layers are important for the development of the endoderm in vertebrates and invertebrates (Tam, P.P., M. Kanai-Azuma, and Y. Kanai. 2003. Curr. Opin. Genet. Dev. 13:393–400; Nakagoshi, H. 2005. Dev. Growth Differ. 47:383–392). In flies, the visceral mesoderm secretes signaling molecules that diffuse into the underlying midgut endoderm, where conserved signaling cascades activate the Hox gene labial, which is important for the differentiation of copper cells (Bienz, M. 1997. Curr. Opin. Genet. Dev. 7:683–688). We present here a Drosophila melanogaster gene of the Fox family of transcription factors, FoxK, that mediates transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) signaling in the embryonic midgut endoderm. FoxK mutant embryos fail to generate midgut constrictions and lack Labial in the endoderm. Our observations suggest that TGF-β signaling directly regulates FoxK through functional Smad/Mad-binding sites, whereas FoxK, in turn, regulates labial expression. We also describe a new cooperative activity of the transcription factors FoxK and Dfos/AP-1 that regulates labial expression in the midgut endoderm. This regulatory activity does not require direct labial activation by the TGF-β effector Mad. Thus, we propose that the combined activity of the TGF-β target genes FoxK and Dfos is critical for the direct activation of lab in the endoderm
A 2MASS All-Sky View of the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy: IV. Modeling the Sagittarius Tidal Tails
M giants recovered from the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) have recently
been used to map the position and velocity distributions of tidal debris from
the Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf spheroidal galaxy entirely around the Galaxy. We
compare this data set to both test particle orbits and N-body simulations of
satellite destruction run within a variety of rigid Milky Way potentials and
find that the mass of the Milky Way within 50 kpc of its center should be
3.8-5.6 x 10^11 Msun in order for any Sgr orbit to simultaneously fit the
velocity gradient in the Sgr trailing debris and the apocenter of the Sgr
leading debris. Orbital pole precession of young debris and leading debris
velocities in regions corresponding to older debris provide contradictory
evidence in favor of oblate/prolate Galactic halo potentials respectively,
leading us to conclude that the orbit of Sgr has evolved over the past few Gyr.
Based upon the velocity dispersion and width along the trailing tidal stream
we estimate the current bound mass of Sgr to be M_Sgr = 2 - 5 x 10^8 Msun
independant of the form of the Galactic potential; this corresponds to a range
of mass to light ratios (M/L)_Sgr = 14 - 36 (M/L)_Sun for the Sgr core. Models
with masses in this range best fit the apocenter of leading Sgr tidal debris
when they orbit with a radial period of roughly 0.85 Gyr and have periGalactica
and apoGalactica of about 15 kpc and 60 kpc respectively. These distances will
scale with the assumed distance to the Sgr dwarf and the assumed depth of the
Galactic potential. The density distribution of debris along the orbit in these
models is consistent with the M giant observations, and debris at all orbital
phases where M giants are obviously present is younger (i.e. was lost more
recently from the satellite) than the typical age of a Sgr M giant star.Comment: 42 pages, 13 figures; Accepted for publication by ApJ (October 08,

Proper motions of the HH1 jet
We describe a new method for determining proper motions of extended objects,
and a pipeline developed for the application of this method. We then apply this
method to an analysis of four epochs of [S~II] HST images of the HH~1 jet
(covering a period of ~yr).
We determine the proper motions of the knots along the jet, and make a
reconstruction of the past ejection velocity time-variability (assuming
ballistic knot motions). This reconstruction shows an "acceleration" of the
ejection velocities of the jet knots, with higher velocities at more recent
times. This acceleration will result in an eventual merging of the knots in
~yr and at a distance of from the outflow source, close to
the present-day position of HH~1.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure
