    Genomic transformation and social organization during the Copper Age-Bronze Age transition in southern Iberia

    The emerging Bronze Age (BA) of southeastern Iberia saw marked social changes. Late Copper Age (CA) settlements were abandoned in favor of hilltop sites, and collective graves were largely replaced by single or double burials with often distinctive grave goods indirectly reflecting a hierarchical social organization, as exemplified by the BA El Argar group. We explored this transition from a genomic viewpoint by tripling the amount of data available for this period. Concomitant with the rise of El Argar starting ∼2200 cal BCE, we observe a complete turnover of Y-chromosome lineages along with the arrival of steppe-related ancestry. This pattern is consistent with a founder effect in male lineages, supported by our finding that males shared more relatives at sites than females.     Perceptions, attitudes and knowledge of evidence-based medicine in primary care in Spain: a study protocol

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The philosophy of evidence-based medicine (EBM) was introduced in the early 90s as a new approach to the practice of medicine, using the best available evidence to make decisions about health care. Despite ongoing controversy, EBM has developed enormously and physicians' attitude towards it is generally positive. Nevertheless, in Spain little is known about this topic. We will therefore undertake a study to explore perceptions, attitudes and knowledge about EBM among primary care physicians.</p> <p>Methods and design</p> <p>A mixed-method study combining qualitative and quantitative designs will target family practitioners in Spain with the objective of evaluating current attitudes and perceptions about evidence-based medicine. The project will consist of two phases: a first phase running focus groups to identify perceptions and attitudes of participants, and a second phase assessing their attitudes and knowledge about EBM by means of a survey. Both phases will explore these issues in three different subgroups: family practitioners, with or without previous formal education in EBM; members of working groups that formulate healthcare recommendations; and physicians in charge of training family practice residents. Additionally, we will undertake a systematic review to identify and synthesize the available evidence on this topic.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>The study will identify and gain insight into the perceived problems and barriers to the practice of evidence-based medicine among general practitioners in Spain. The project will also evaluate the main knowledge gaps and training needs, and explore how evidence-based medicine is being taught to family medicine residents, the medical practitioners of the future. Our results will aid researchers and health care planners in developing strategies to improve the practice of evidence-based medicine in our country.</p

    Local imipenem activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa decreases in vivo in the presence of siliconized latex

    Zinc eluted from siliconized latex (SL) increases resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to imipenem in vitro. A foreign body peritonitis model was used to evaluate the activity of imipenem using SL or silicone (S) implants. No differences were observed in mortality, positive blood cultures and tissue bacterial counts between SL and S implants. Implant-associated counts, however, were significantly higher in the SL group.     II jornadas de intercambio de prácticas educativas en las aulas especializadas

    Las Aulas Especializadas han sido un recurso de calidad y ha presentado un avance notable en las condiciones de escolarización del alumnado con trastornos del espectro autista, con trastornos específico del lenguaje, con discapacidad motriz y con polidiscapacidad. La satisfacción de los padres y madres, del profesorado y los progresos del alumnado avalan el camino emprendido. Lo que en el año 2002 eran experiencias de innovación pedagógica son una realidad repartida por toda la geografía andaluza. Se ha avanzado mucho, pero se debe seguir haciéndolo, completando la red de aulas, consolidando una oferta especializada en todas las provincias y, sobre todo, elevando el nivel técnico de los profesionales mediante actividades de formación como estas II Jornadas de Intercambio de Prácticas Educativas.     Es una distinción, como miembro de la Comisión del Programa del Doctorado en Ciencias de la Salud de la Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México, presentar el libro titulado Estudios multidisciplinarios en Ciencias de la Salud, en el que distinguidos y reconocidos investigadores, entusiastas y comprometidos alumnos del programa nos dan a conocer los resultados de sus proyectos de investigación, trabajos que forman parte de los requisitos para acceder al grado de doctor.
