    Effect of Polymer Hydration on the Kinetic Release of Drugs: A Study of Ibuprofen and Ketoprofen in HPMC Matrices

    Samples of drug/hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) mixtures and matrices (drug/HPMC mixtures plus excipients) were allowed to equilibrate in closed chambers with defined relative humidities (RHs). Their water uptake and drug release were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry/thermogravimetric analysis and dissolution studies, respectively. Analysis of the thermal behaviors of the drug/HPMC mixtures and of the polymer alone, as functions of RH, leads to the conclusion that most of the hydration water is retained by the polymer, and points to the occurrence of different types of hydration water, from the strongly polymer-bound water molecules at RH values up to 81%, to the almost “free water” for RH values close to 100%. In addition, application of the Korsmeyer model to the dissolution results leads to the conclusion that the rate determining dissolution processes are predominantly of the fickian type.http://www.informaworld.com/10.1081/DDC-12001820

    Energy Embodiment in Brazilian Agriculture: An Overview of 23 Crops

    The amount of energy required to produce a commodity or to supply a service varies from one production system to another and consequently giving rise to differing levels of environmental efficiency. Moreover, since energy prices have been continuously increasing over time, this energy amount may be a factor that has economic worth. Biomass production has a variety of end-products such as food, energy, and fiber; thus, taking into account the similarity in end-product of different crops (e.g.: sunflower, peanuts, or soybean for oil) it is possible to evaluate which crops require less energy per functional unit, such as starch, oil, and protein. This information can be used in decision-making about policies for food safety or bioenergy. In this study, 23 crops were evaluated allowing for a comparison in terms of energy embodied per functional unit. Crops were grouped as follows: starch, oil, horticultural, perennial and fiber, to provide for a deeper analysis of alternatives for the groups, and subsidize further studies comparing conventional and alternative production systems such as organic or genetically modified organisms, in terms of energy. The best energy balance observed was whole sugarcane (juice, bagasse and straw) with a surplus of 268 GJ ha−1 yr−1; palm shows the highest energy return on investment with a ratio of approximately 30:1. For carbohydrates and protein production, cassava and soybean, respectively, emerged as the crops offering the greatest energy savings in the production of these functional foods

    Vanishing Viscous Limits for 3D Navier-Stokes Equations with A Navier-Slip Boundary Condition

    In this paper, we investigate the vanishing viscosity limit for solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations with a Navier slip boundary condition on general compact and smooth domains in R3\mathbf{R}^3. We first obtain the higher order regularity estimates for the solutions to Prandtl's equation boundary layers. Furthermore, we prove that the strong solution to Navier-Stokes equations converges to the Eulerian one in C([0,T];H1(Ω))C([0,T];H^1(\Omega)) and L^\infty((0,T)\times\o), where TT is independent of the viscosity, provided that initial velocity is regular enough.     Viscous-Inviscid Interactions in a Boundary-Layer Flow Induced by a Vortex Array

    In this paper we investigate the asymptotic validity of boundary layer theory. For a flow induced by a periodic row of point-vortices, we compare Prandtl's solution to Navier-Stokes solutions at different ReRe numbers. We show how Prandtl's solution develops a finite time separation singularity. On the other hand Navier-Stokes solution is characterized by the presence of two kinds of viscous-inviscid interactions between the boundary layer and the outer flow. These interactions can be detected by the analysis of the enstrophy and of the pressure gradient on the wall. Moreover we apply the complex singularity tracking method to Prandtl and Navier-Stokes solutions and analyze the previous interactions from a different perspective

    Fibromyalgia (FM) is a generalized chronic pain syndrome of unknown aetiology. Although FM patients frequently complain of cognitive dysfunction, this is one of the least studied symptoms. Research on brain activity associated with the perceived cognitive impairment is particularly scarce.     Influência da integridade dos frutos de taperebá (Spondias mombin L.) in natura na qualidade da polpa congelada.

    Encontrado na região Amazônica o taperebá é um fruto amplamente consumido, em função do sabor agradável, boa composição nutricional e presença de carotenoides. A comercialização como polpa congelada é a forma de beneficiamento mais usual no Brasil. A polpa do fruto é revestida por uma casca fina, facilmente rompida por choque mecânico, o tornando muito perecível. A coleta dos frutos na Amazônica é feita de forma manual, quando maduros se desprendem das árvores (altura de 20 a 30 metros), sendo então coletados no solo ou em telas de proteção. Tal prática resulta na perda de integridade da maioria dos frutos, o que torna mais rápida a deterioração dos mesmos. Entretanto, não há registros científicos relacionando a qualidade da polpa com a integridade dos frutos. Desta forma, o objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar esta influência, realizando a caracterização físico-química, estudos de compostos bioativos e análise microbiológica. Resultados mostraram que a polpa obtida através de frutos mais íntegros apresentou maiores teores de compostos fenólicos, vitamina C, sólidos solúveis e açúcares totais, podendo indicar que os frutos batidos possivelmente sofreram ligeiro processo fermentativo. Análises microbiológicas apresentaram contagens de bactérias e bolores e leveduras superiores, além da detecção de coliformes, inclusive fecais. Tais resultados reforçam a necessidade de técnicas mais apropriadas de coleta e da prática de pasteurização para polpa, visando a qualidade do produto final

    Bioplastic production using wood mill effluents as feedstock

    [Abstract] Fibreboard production is one of the most important industrial activities in Galicia (Spain). Great amounts of wastewater are generated, with properties depending on the type of wood, treatment process, final product and water reusing, among others. These effluents are characterized by a high chemical oxygen demand, low pH and nutrients limitation. Although anaerobic digestion is one of the most suitable processes for the treatment, lately bioplastics production (mainly polyhydroxyalkanoates) from wastewaters with mixed cultures is being evaluated. Substrate requirements for these processes consist of high organic matter content and low nutrient concentration. Therefore, wood mill effluents could be a suitable feedstock. In this work, the possibility of producing bioplastics from to wood mill effluents is evaluated. First, wood mill effluent was converted to volatile fatty acids in an acidogenic reactor operated at two different hydraulic retention times of 1 and 1.5 d. The acidification percentage obtained was 37% and 42%, respectively. Then, aerobic batch assays were performed using fermented wood mill effluents obtained at different hydraulic retention times. Assays were developed using different cultures as inoculums. The maximum storage yield of 0.57 Cmmol/Cmmol was obtained when when the culture was enriched on a synthetic media
