This article presents a STS education approach applied to the interpretation of the Quilmes heritage. The concept of heritage is polysemic and can be approached from different disciplines; thus, the work proposal presented here consists of an interdisciplinary approach that guarantees not only the incorporation of content, but its real appropriation by students through a reflective and constructive process of Critical Thinking. This sequence, developed and applied within the framework of an Extension Project, which we included within Heritage Education, is part of an identity construction (individual and collective) and whose valuation and preservation depends on the development of commitment and citizen participation attitudes that transcend the time barrier and reach future generations. To assess the didactic sequence, a survey from an international project on motivation, scientific skills, usefulness and critical thinking was used. The student found the proposal useful and interesting and allowed them to develop scientific skills.Fil: Lampert, Damian Alberto. The identity of Buenos Aires quarters and its place branding

This document describes the research that has been carried out to determine the identity of 20 of the neighbourhoods of the city of Buenos Aires (Argentina). Its aim was to detect potential opportunities for tourism development purposes in different selected neighbourhoods in order to be able to divert the tourism flow to “cold” areas of the city, enabling to define new strategies orientated to promote the tourism. This is an exploratory study with a qualitative approach where the neighbour´s perspective was the priority from where to analyse the identity of the selected neighbourhoods. The underlying assumption was that, as neighbours take ownership of their main areas of their neighbourhoods they live in and they intervene them they will be convening visitors from the rest of the city, the country or the rest of the world. During the course of the investigation, this assumption turned into the hypothesis that was confirmed afterwards.Fil: Pizarro, Marcela. Universidad Austral. Facultad de Comunicación. Objective: To determine whether technetium-99m-labeled tropane derivative single-photon emission computed tomography (99mTc-TRODAT-1 SPECT) provides results comparable to those of the less widely available, less accessible tool fluorine-18-labeled fluorodopa positron-emission tomography (18F-FDOPA PET) in the setting of a movement disorders clinic. Materials and Methods: In this prospective pilot study, eight subjects with a clinical diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease were randomly selected from among patients under treatment at a movement disorders clinic and submitted to99mTc-TRODAT-1 SPECT and18F-FDOPA PET. The results were read by two experienced observers, and a semiquantitative analysis was performed. Results: The visual and semiquantitative analyses were concordant for all studies, showing that radiotracer uptake in the contralateral striatum on the most affected side was lower when99mTc-TRODAT-1 SPECT was employed. The semiquantitative analysis demonstrated a significant correlation between18F-FDOPA PET and99mTc-TRODAT-1 SPECT (r = 0.73; p < 0.01). Conclusion: It appears that99mTc-TRODAT-1 SPECT is a valid option for the study of dopaminergic function in a clinical setting.

Surgical treatment for colorectal cancer: Analysis of the influence of an enhanced recovery programme on long-term oncological outcomes-a study protocol for a prospective, multicentre, observational cohort study

Introduction The evidence currently available from enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) programmes concerns their benefits in the immediate postoperative period, but there is still very little evidence as to whether their correct implementation benefits patients in the long term. The working hypothesis here is that, due to the lower response to surgical aggression and lower rates of postoperative complications, ERAS protocols can reduce colorectal cancer-related mortality. The main objective of this study is to analyse the impact of an ERAS programme for colorectal cancer on 5-year survival. As secondary objectives, we propose to analyse the weight of each of the predefined items in the oncological results as well as the quality of life. Methods and analysis A multicentre prospective cohort study was conducted in patients older than 18 years of age who are scheduled to undergo surgery for colorectal cancer. The study involved 12 hospitals with an implemented enhanced recovery protocol according to the guidelines published by the Spanish National Health Service. The intervention group includes patients with a minimum implementation level of 70%, and the control group includes those who fail to reach this level. Compliance will be studied using 18 key performance indicators, and the results will be analysed using cancer survival indicators, including overall survival, cancer-specific survival and relapse-free survival. The time to recurrence, perioperative morbidity and mortality, hospital stay and quality of life will also be studied, the latter using the validated EuroQol Five questionnaire. The propensity index method will be used to create comparable treatment and control groups, and a multivariate regression will be used to study each variable. The Kaplan-Meier estimator will be used to estimate survival and the log-rank test to make comparisons. A p value of less than 0.05 (two-tailed) will be considered to be significant. Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval for this study was obtained from the Aragon Ethical Committee (C.P.-C.I. PI20/086) on 4 March 2020. The findings of this study will be submitted to peer-reviewed journals (BMJ Open, JAMA Surgery, Annals of Surgery, British Journal of Surgery). Abstracts will be submitted to relevant national and international meetings. The present research study was awarded a Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación health research project grant (PI19/00291) from the Carlos III Institute of the Spanish National Health Service as part of the 2019 call for Strategic Action in Health

    Reconstructing Native American Population History

    Get PDF
The peopling of the Americas has been the subject of extensive genetic, archaeological and linguistic research; however, central questions remain unresolved1–5. One contentious issue is whether the settlement occurred via a single6–8 or multiple streams of migration from Siberia9–15. The pattern of dispersals within the Americas is also poorly understood. To address these questions at higher resolution than was previously possible, we assembled data from 52 Native American and 17 Siberian groups genotyped at 364,470 single nucleotide polymorphisms. We show that Native Americans descend from at least three streams of Asian gene flow. Most descend entirely from a single ancestral population that we call “First American”. However, speakers of Eskimo-Aleut languages from the Arctic inherit almost half their ancestry from a second stream of Asian gene flow, and the Na-Dene-speaking Chipewyan from Canada inherit roughly one-tenth of their ancestry from a third stream. We show that the initial peopling followed a southward expansion facilitated by the coast, with sequential population splits and little gene flow after divergence, especially in South America. A major exception is in Chibchan-speakers on both sides of the Panama Isthmus, who have ancestry from both North and South America
