Research and development of a high efficiency gas-fired water heater. Volume 2. Task reports
Design and development of a cost-effective high efficiency gas-fired water heater to attain a service efficiency of 70% (including the effect of exfiltration) and a service efficiency of 78% (excluding exfiltration) for a 75 GPD draw at a 90/sup 0/F temperature rise, with a stored water to conditioned air temperature difference of 80/sup 0/F, are described in detail. Based on concept evaluation, a non-powered natural draft water heater was chosen as the most cost-effective design to develop. The projected installed cost is 200 for a conventional unit. When the project water heater is compared to a conventional unit, it has a payback of 3.7 years and life cycle savings of $350 to the consumer. A prototype water heater was designed, constructed, and tested. When operated with sealed combustion, the unit has a service efficiency of 66.4% (including the effect of exfiltration) below a burner input of 32,000 Btu/h. In the open combustion configuration, the unit operated at a measured efficiency of 66.4% Btu/h (excluding exfiltration). This compares with a service efficiency of 51.3% for a conventional water heater and 61% for a conventional high efficiency unit capable of meeting ASHRAE 90-75. Operational tests showed the unit performed well with no evidence of stacking or hot spots. It met or exceeded all capacity or usage tests specified in the program test plan and met all emission goals. Future work will concentrate on designing, building, and testing pre-production units. It is anticipated that both sealed combustion and open draft models will be pursued

Research and development of a high efficiency gas-fired water heater. Volume 1. Final report summary
A summary of the work performed to design and develop a cost-effective high efficiency gas-fired water heater is presented. Details on the project plan showing the allocation of financial and personnel resources, the technical approach, the timing of principal events, decision, and milestones are described (Task 1). Studies necessary to determine the marketability of the high efficiency heaters in the residential sector are performed for Task 2. The necessary work to develop, fabricate, and test a prototype unit as specified in Task 2 is identified in Task 3. Test and evaluation specifications are also identified in Task 3. Task 4 consists of preparing the project plan for the production and field demonstration of the gas-fired water heater. (MCW
Non-invasive detection of animal nerve impulses with an atomic magnetometer operating near quantum limited sensitivity
Magnetic fields generated by human and animal organs, such as the heart,
brain and nervous system carry information useful for biological and medical
purposes. These magnetic fields are most commonly detected using
cryogenically-cooled superconducting magnetometers. Here we present the frst
detection of action potentials from an animal nerve using an optical atomic
magnetometer. Using an optimal design we are able to achieve the sensitivity
dominated by the quantum shot noise of light and quantum projection noise of
atomic spins. Such sensitivity allows us to measure the nerve impulse with a
miniature room-temperature sensor which is a critical advantage for biomedical
applications. Positioning the sensor at a distance of a few millimeters from
the nerve, corresponding to the distance between the skin and nerves in
biological studies, we detect the magnetic field generated by an action
potential of a frog sciatic nerve. From the magnetic field measurements we
determine the activity of the nerve and the temporal shape of the nerve
impulse. This work opens new ways towards implementing optical magnetometers as

Isotopic variation of parity violation in atomic ytterbium
We report on measurements of atomic parity violation, made on a chain of
ytterbium isotopes with mass numbers A=170, 172, 174, and 176. In the
experiment, we optically excite the 6s2 1S0 -> 5d6s 3D1 transition in a region
of crossed electric and magnetic fields, and observe the interference between
the Stark- and weak-interaction-induced transition amplitudes, by making field
reversals that change the handedness of the coordinate system. This allows us
to determine the ratio of the weak-interaction-induced electric-dipole (E1)
transition moment and the Stark-induced E1 moment. Our measurements, which are
at the 0.5% level of accuracy for three of the four isotopes measured, allow a
definitive observation of the isotopic variation of the weak-interaction
effects in an atom, which is found to be consistent with the prediction of the
Standard Model. In addition, our measurements provide information about an

Dengue viruses cluster antigenically but not as discrete serotypes.
The four genetically divergent dengue virus (DENV) types are traditionally classified as serotypes. Antigenic and genetic differences among the DENV types influence disease outcome, vaccine-induced protection, epidemic magnitude, and viral evolution. We characterized antigenic diversity in the DENV types by antigenic maps constructed from neutralizing antibody titers obtained from African green monkeys and after human vaccination and natural infections. Genetically, geographically, and temporally, diverse DENV isolates clustered loosely by type, but we found that many are as similar antigenically to a virus of a different type as to some viruses of the same type. Primary infection antisera did not neutralize all viruses of the same DENV type any better than other types did up to 2 years after infection and did not show improved neutralization to homologous type isolates. Pseudo-aneurysm of the anterior tibial artery, a rare cause of ankle swelling following a sports injury
BACKGROUND: Ankle pain and swelling following sports injuries are common presenting complaints to the accident and emergency department. Frequently these are diagnosed as musculoskeletal injuries, even when no definitive cause is found. Vascular injuries following trauma are uncommon and are an extremely rare cause of ankle swelling and pain. These injuries may however be limb threatening and are important to diagnose early, in order that appropriate treatment can be delivered. We highlight the steps to diagnosis of these injuries, and methods of managing these injuries. It is important for clinicians to be aware of the potential for this injury in patients with seemingly innocuous trauma from sports injuries, who have significant ankle pain and swelling. CASE PRESENTATION: A young, professional sportsman presented with a swollen, painful ankle after an innocuous hyper-plantar flexion injury whilst playing football, which was initially diagnosed as a ligamentous injury after no bony injury was revealed on X-Ray. He returned 2 days later with a large ulcer at the lateral malleolus and further investigation by duplex ultrasound and transfemoral arteriogram revealed a Pseudo-Aneurysm of the Anterior Tibial Artery. This was initially managed with percutaneous injection of thrombin, and later open surgery to ligate the feeding vessel. The patient recovered fully and was able to return to recreational sport. CONCLUSION: Vascular injuries remain a rare cause of ankle pain and swelling following sports injuries, however it is important to consider these injuries when no definite musculo-skeletal cause is found. Ultrasound duplex and Transfemoral arteriogram are appropriate, sensitive modalities for investigation, and may allow novel treatment to be directed percutaneously. Early diagnosis and intervention are essential for the successful outcome in these patients
Comparative susceptibility of mosquito populations in North Queensland, Australia to oral infection with dengue virus.
Dengue is the most prevalent arthropod-borne virus, with at least 40% of the world's population at risk of infection each year. In Australia, dengue is not endemic, but viremic travelers trigger outbreaks involving hundreds of cases. We compared the susceptibility of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes from two geographically isolated populations to two strains of dengue virus serotype 2. We found, interestingly, that mosquitoes from a city with no history of dengue were more susceptible to virus than mosquitoes from an outbreak-prone region, particularly with respect to one dengue strain. These findings suggest recent evolution of population-based differences in vector competence or different historical origins. Future genomic comparisons of these populations could reveal the genetic basis of vector competence and the relative role of selection and stochastic processes in shaping their differences. Lastly, we show the novel finding of a correlation between midgut dengue titer and titer in tissues colonized after dissemination
Non-extremal Black Hole Microstates: Fuzzballs of Fire or Fuzzballs of Fuzz ?
We construct the first family of microstate geometries of near-extremal black
holes, by placing metastable supertubes inside certain scaling supersymmetric
smooth microstate geometries. These fuzzballs differ from the classical black
hole solution macroscopically at the horizon scale, and for certain probes the
fluctuations between various fuzzballs will be visible as thermal noise far
away from the horizon. We discuss whether these fuzzballs appear to infalling
observers as fuzzballs of fuzz or as fuzzballs of fire. The existence of these
solutions suggests that the singularity of non-extremal black holes is resolved
all the way to the outer horizon and this "backwards in time" singularity
resolution can shed light on the resolution of spacelike cosmological

Black rings with fourth dipole cause less hair loss
An example of entropy enigma with a controlled CFT dual was recently studied
in arXiv:1108.0411. The enigmatic bulk configurations, considered within the
STU model, can be mapped under spectral flow into black rings with three
monopole and dipole charges. Even though the bulk and CFT configurations
existed in the same region of parameter space, the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy
of the bulk configurations was found to be lower than the microscopic entropy
from the CFT. While it is possible that the difference in entropy is due to the
bulk and boundary configurations being at different points in the moduli space,
it is also possible that the bulk configurations embeddable within the STU
model are not the most entropic. New families of BPS black ring solutions with
four electric and four dipole magnetic charges have recently been explicitly
constructed in arXiv:1201.2585. These black rings are not embeddable within the
STU model. In this paper we investigate if these black rings can be
entropically dominant over the STU model black rings. We find that the new
black rings are always entropically subdominant to the STU-model black rings.
However, for small fourth dipole charge these black rings continue to be
