Non-government organizations as a successful business model in the field of sustainable tourism: The case of the 365 Association.

    Get PDF
The non-government sector has been growing in popularity in the recent years and has been a subject of many investigations by many researchers. With the rapid development of tourism, it is no surprise that the leisure field is also being affected by the third sector, therefore this paper is trying to investigate the non-government organizations in the field of tourism and more specifically from the perspective of sustainable tourism as one of the most recent trends. Sustainable tourism is pursuing a balanced sustenance for tourism taking in consideration the economic, social and environmental aspects. It is trying to diminish all the negative impacts tourism is usually bringing and to boost the positive ones assuring long-term livelihood for economies, society and the environment. The NGO sector has similar motives of serving the society, thus the crossing point of these two lines presents an interesting topic for investigation in terms of the success of the NGOs in general, their success from the perspective of tourism and especially sustainable tourism

A New Approach for Fast Processing of SPARQL Queries on RDF Quadruples

University of Missouri--Kansas City, 2015The Resource Description Framework (RDF) is a standard model for representing data on the Web. It enables the interchange and machine processing of data by considering its semantics. While RDF was first proposed with the vision of enabling the Semantic Web, it has now become popular in domain-specific applications and the Web. Through advanced RDF technologies, one can perform semantic reasoning over data and extract knowledge in domains such as healthcare, biopharmaceuticals, defense, and intelligence. Popular approaches like RDF-3X perform poorly on RDF datasets containing billions of triples when the queries are large and complex. This is because of the large number of join operations that must be performed during query processing. Moreover, most of the scalable approaches were designed to operate on RDF triples instead of quads. To address these issues, we propose to develop a new approach for fast and cost-effective processing of SPARQL queries on large RDF datasets containing RDF quadruples (or quads). Our approach employs a decrease-and-conquer strategy: Rather than indexing the entire RDF dataset, it identifies groups of similar RDF graphs and indexes each group separately. During query processing, it uses a novel filtering index to first identify candidate groups that may contain matches for the query. On these candidates, it executes queries using a conventional SPARQL processor to produce the final results. A query optimization strategy using the candidate groups to further improve the query processing performance is also used.Introduction -- Background and motivations -- The design of RIQ -- Implementation of RIQ -- Evaluation -- Conclusion and future work -- Appendix A. University of Missouri--Kansas City, 2012After more than a decade of active research and development, the peer-to-peer (P2P) computing model continues to be successful. We have witnessed the deployment of commercial P2P applications in large, Internet-scale environments. With the rise and growth of P2P, indexing and querying data stored in large-scale sharing systems has become increasingly di cult. Computing statistics over data stored in Internet-scale P2P systems is an important component of query optimization. Decentralized gossip-based protocols are very popular in networking, and in particular, in sensor networks. The simplicity and scalability of gossip protocols render them perfect for quickly computing accurate estimates of aggregates (sums, averages, etc.) in Internet-scale systems where node and link failures are the norm. In this thesis, we present the problem of cardinality estimation of XPath queries over XML data stored in a distributed, Internet-scale environment. We focus our work on three objectives: implementing gossip in an Internet-scale environment, conducting a comprehensive performance evaluation in a wide-area network, and analyzing the experimental results. We implement two gossip-based algorithms (VanillaXGossip and XGossip) which, given an XPath query, estimate the number of XML documents in the network that contain a match for the query. XGossip employs a new, divide-and-conquer strategy for load-balancing and reducing the bandwidth consumption. We conduct a comprehensive performance evaluation of both gossip algorithms on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) web service using a heterogeneous collection of XML documents. The goal of the performance evaluation is to nd if the results we obtain are consistent with the theoretical analysis of VanillaXGossip and XGossip.Introduction -- Background and motivations -- The design of VanillaXGossip and XGossip -- Implementation of VanillaXGossip and XGossip -- Evaluation -- Conclusion and future work -- Appendix A. New approach to investigation of resonant vibrations of noncircular shells based on the theory of coupled waveguides

    Get PDF
In the present paper a new simple method of analytical description of resonant vibrations of finite noncircular cylindrical shells is developed. The method is based on the theory of coupled waveguides formed by quasiflat areas of the same noncircular shells having an infinite length (depth). The physical reason for guided wave propagation along quasiflat areas of such shells is the difference between flexural wave velocities in their quasiflat and curved areas, respectively. Using asymptotic expressions for flexural wave velocities in circular shells with different radii of curvature, approximate dispersion equations are derived for waves propagating in such waveguides and their corresponding coupling coefficients. After that, considering shells of finite length, the transition is made from the coupled guided modes to the coupled resonant vibrations of the shell. The obtained resonant frequencies and spatial distributions of the resulting vibration modes are in good agreement with the results of finite element calculations

Structural-acoustic properties of flexible rectangular boxes

    Get PDF
Rectangular box-like structures are used widely in a large number of engineering applications, e.g. as elements of railway carriages, heavy goods vehicles, buildings, civil engineering constructions, etc. Although flexible rectangular boxes represent one of the geometrically simple types of engineering structures, their structural-acoustic properties cannot be described by closed-form analytical solutions. In the present study, a comprehensive numerical investigation of typical all-flexible rectangular box structures has been carried out to elucidate the physics of structural-acoustic interaction in them and to explore the possibilities of reduction of the associated structure-borne interior noise. Finite element method has been used to compute the resonant frequencies, the mode shapes and the structural-acoustic frequency response functions of different rectangular box models. The obtained results could assist in better understanding of structural-acoustic properties of flexible rectangular boxes as well as of numerous more complex structures using rectangular boxes as their building elements

Finite element study of the effect of structural modifications on structure-borne vehicle interior noise

    Get PDF
This paper presents the results of the numerical investigation of structure-borne vehicle interior noise in a simplified model of vehicle compartment. The aim of the paper is to analyze the effects of different variations of certain geometrical and material parameters of vehicle structure on structural-acoustic frequency response functions. It has been found that geometrical modifications have little influence on the structural natural frequencies. However, they strongly affect the acoustic natural frequencies and normal modes as well as the resulting sound pressure responses. The increase in thickness of the bottom plate suppresses the sound pressure responses very efficiently. However, variations of material characteristics of wind- and back-screen do not have much influence on the interior noise
