Whole Body Vibration in Anterior Cruciate Ligament Rehabilitation

    Get PDF
There has been an increasing prevalence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. In the literature describing ACL rehabilitation program flexibility, muscle strength, proprioception, and postural stability have been identified as reoccurring struggles that have arisen during rehabilitation. Whole Body Vibration (WBV) has been investigate as a rehabilitation tool that can be used when recovering from an ACL injury. Research has suggested that WBV can be used to increase flexibility, improve muscular strength, increase proprioception, and improve postural stability. The purpose of this review is to gather the WBV protocols used in previous research and apply them to ACL rehabilitation. An EBSCO and Google Scholar search was initiated with key words of: whole, body, vibration, anterior, cruciate, ligament, injury, and rehabilitation. Articles were saved that explained how vibrations worked, use of WBV to advance athletic performance, injury rehabilitation, vibrations during ACL rehabilitation, and protocols for using vibration on athletes. The protocols that are described have shown to improve the rehabilitation programs and as a collection will act as a guide and provide a starting point for health-care professionals to use WBV as a rehabilitation tools for patients recovering from ACL injuries

A short note on Cayley-Salmon equations

A Cayley-Salmon equation for a smooth cubic surface S in P3 is an expression of the form l1l2l3 - m1m2m3 = 0 such that the zero set is S and li, mj are homogeneous linear forms. This expression was first used by Cayley and Salmon to study the incidence relations of the 27 lines on S. There are 120 essentially distinct Cayley-Salmon equations for S. In this note we give an exposition of a classical proof of this fact. We illustrate the explicit calculation to obtain these equations and we apply it to the Clebsch surface and to the octanomial form appearing in work of Panizzut, Sertöz and Sturmfels. Finally we show that these 120 Cayley-Salom equations can be directly computed using recent work by Cueto and Deopurkar

Giant phyllodes tumour – Case report, oncoplastic treatment and literature controversies

    Get PDF
Phyllodes tumour corresponds to 1% of breast primary tumours. Its primary treatment is presently surgical and, for several reasons, it usually requires breast reconstruction. First of all, an important breast volume is often removed, not only because it can easily achieve great dimensions, thanks to it fast growing potential, but also because wide excision is recommended to avoid its frequent but unpredictable local recurrence (meaning that ideal tumour resection margins are unknown). Second, it frequently affects young woman with more aesthetic concerns. We present a case of phyllodes tumour recurrence where oncoplastic surgery was necessary at both episodes and discuss the literature controversies on this subject, mainly related to treatment and prognosis prediction factors.

Lebanon and Haiti are two experiences that illustrate the role of armed forces in armed conflicts and natural disasters. These situations have generated or may generate major humanitarian emergencies in which the international community must have an impact through the mechanisms at its disposal to alleviate the immediate effects they produce, as well as to try to improve people's lives with a long-term perspective. This is why this paper aims to show the importance of continuing to row together, cooperatively and in an organised manner in the face of possible future scenarios where disasters can generate difficult situations in which people's lives are at risk.Máster en Cooperación Internacional para el Desarroll

Participation and wind energy, a review of the Scottish and Andalusian strategy through content analysis

The shift from government to governance and the inclusion of new actors in the domain of renewable energy has been regarded to have the potential to create an active civil society, especially in the countryside, in a move away from a centralised state to small autonomous clusters. Renewable energy lends itself better for wider public involvement and even ownership than traditional fossil fuel power plants, as it can allow for smaller development and doesn't need the degree of centralisation for diffusion in the same way as carbon fuels. In a sense, Energy, a traditionally state matter, has been brought to a more popular ground due to the decentralised nature of the wind resources and wind power. However, this does not necessarily mean that citizens are now in control of wind power. They are, however, closer to the generation of energy. The interesting question to ask now is, how do institutional authorities accommodate to this shift? I have explored this theme focusing on the regions of Scotland and Andalusia (southern Spain), and attempted to analyse their most recent (public publication on summer 2014) executive strategy for Renewable Energy development until 2020. Mobilising the literature on public participation and wind energy and environmental policy, I have identified issues that arise in the process of institutionalisation of participation. On these issues, I have built a methodological framework to assess to what extent Scotland and Andalusia have recognized and integrated these issues, and how they have responded

Marrying research evidence and policies in Latin America and the Caribbean: The Case of Violence

Violence is probably the most important public health problem in Latin America and the Caribbean. Despite the efforts to attach that problem, research and policies do not feedback each other in an apropiate way. There is need for develop implementation research in the region in order to reduce that gap.Fil: Ardila Gómez, Sara Elena. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas; Argentina.
