Adaptation and Resilience of Interdependent Infrastructure Systems: a Complex Systems Perspective
The effects of disruption upon one or more components in interdependent infrastructure systems and the ability of
the system to return to normal operations, is investigated in this paper. This addresses the concept of resilience, and
examines the trade-off between redundancy and efficiency, as well as the adaptive ability of a system to respond to
disruptions and continue to operate, albeit not necessarily as it did initially
On Renyi entropies characterizing the shape and the extension of the phase space representation of quantum wave functions in disordered systems
We discuss some properties of the generalized entropies, called Renyi
entropies and their application to the case of continuous distributions. In
particular it is shown that these measures of complexity can be divergent,
however, their differences are free from these divergences thus enabling them
to be good candidates for the description of the extension and the shape of
continuous distributions. We apply this formalism to the projection of wave
functions onto the coherent state basis, i.e. to the Husimi representation. We
also show how the localization properties of the Husimi distribution on average
can be reconstructed from its marginal distributions that are calculated in
position and momentum space in the case when the phase space has no structure,
i.e. no classical limit can be defined. Numerical simulations on a one

Optimized generation of spatial qudits by using a pure phase spatial light modulator
We present a method for preparing arbitrary pure states of spatial qudits,
namely, D-dimensional (D > 2) quantum systems carrying information in the
transverse momentum and position of single photons. For this purpose, a set of
D slits with complex transmission are displayed on a spatial light modulator
(SLM). In a recent work we have shown a method that requires a single
phase-only SLM to control independently the complex coefficients which define
the quantum state of dimension D. The amplitude information was codified by
introducing phase gratings inside each slit and the phase value of the complex
transmission was added to the phase gratings. After a spatial filtering process
we obtained in the image plane the desired qudit state. Although this method
has proven to be a good alternative to compact the previously reported
architectures, it presents some features that could be improved. In this paper
we present an alternative scheme to codify the required phase values that
minimizes the effects of temporal phase fluctuations associated to the SLM
where the codification is carried on. In this scheme the amplitudes are set by
appropriate phase gratings addressed at the SLM while the relative phases are
obtained by a lateral displacement of these phase gratings. We show that this
method improves the quality of the prepared state and provides very high
fidelities of preparation for any state. An additional advantage of this scheme
is that a complete 2\pi modulation is obtained by shifting the grating by one
period, and hence the encoding is not limited by the phase modulation range
achieved by the SLM. Numerical simulations, that take into account the phase
fluctuations, show high fidelities for thousands of qubit states covering the
whole Bloch sphere surface. Similar analysis are performed for qudits with D =

Conditional purity and quantum correlation measures in two qubit mixed states
We analyze and show experimental results of the conditional purity, the
quantum discord and other related measures of quantum correlation in mixed
two-qubit states constructed from a pair of photons in identical polarization
states. The considered states are relevant for the description of spin pair
states in interacting spin chains in a transverse magnetic field. We derive
clean analytical expressions for the conditional local purity and other
correlation measures obtained as a result of a remote local projective
measurement, which are fully verified by the experimental results. A simple
exact expression for the quantum discord of these states in terms of the

Revealing a strongly reddened, faint active galactic nucleus population by stacking deep co-added images
More than half of the sources identified by recent radio sky surveys have not been detected by wide-field optical surveys. We present a study, based on our co-added image stacking technique, in which our aim is to detect the optical emission from unresolved, isolated radio sources of the Very Large Array (VLA) Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-cm (FIRST) survey that have no identified optical counterparts in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82 co-added data set. From the FIRST catalogue, 2116 such radio point sources were selected, and cut-out images, centred on the FIRST coordinates, were generated from the Stripe 82 images. The already co-added cut-outs were stacked once again to obtain images of high signal-to-noise ratio, in the hope that optical emission from the radio sources would become detectable. Multiple stacks were generated, based on the radio luminosity of the point sources. The resulting stacked images show central peaks similar to point sources. The peaks have very red colours with steep optical spectral energy distributions. We have found that the optical spectral index α ν falls in the range -2.9 ≤ α ν ≤ -2.2 (Sν∝ναν), depending only weakly on the radio flux. The total integration times of the stacks are between 270 and 300h, and the corresponding 5σ detection limit is estimated to be about m r ≃ 26.6 mag. We argue that the detected light is mainly from the central regions of dust-reddened Type 1 active galactic nuclei. Dust-reddened quasars might represent an early phase of quasar evolution, and thus they can also give us an insight into the formation of massive galaxies. Identification of Young Stellar Object candidates in the DR2 x AllWISE catalogue with machine learning methods
The second Data Release (DR2) contains astrometric and photometric
data for more than 1.6 billion objects with mean magnitude 20.7,
including many Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) in different evolutionary stages.
In order to explore the YSO population of the Milky Way, we combined the
DR2 database with WISE and Planck measurements and made an all-sky
probabilistic catalogue of YSOs using machine learning techniques, such as
Support Vector Machines, Random Forests, or Neural Networks. Our input
catalogue contains 103 million objects from the DR2xAllWISE cross-match table.
We classified each object into four main classes: YSOs, extragalactic objects,
main-sequence stars and evolved stars. At a 90% probability threshold we
identified 1,129,295 YSO candidates. To demonstrate the quality and potential
of our YSO catalogue, here we present two applications of it. (1) We explore
the 3D structure of the Orion A star forming complex and show that the spatial
distribution of the YSOs classified by our procedure is in agreement with
recent results from the literature. (2) We use our catalogue to classify
published Science Alerts. As measures the sources at multiple
epochs, it can efficiently discover transient events, including sudden
brightness changes of YSOs caused by dynamic processes of their circumstellar
disk. However, in many cases the physical nature of the published alert sources
are not known. A cross-check with our new catalogue shows that about 30% more
of the published alerts can most likely be attributed to YSO activity.
The catalogue can be also useful to identify YSOs among future alerts.Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 3 table
