Food Indicators and Their Relationship with 10 to 12 Year-olds' Subjective Well-Being
This study aimed to test subjective indicators designed to analyze the role food plays in
children’s lives, explore children’s personal well-being, and evaluate the relationship between
these two phenomena. It was conducted on 371 children aged 10 to 12 by means of a selfadministered
questionnaire.
Results showed a marked interest in food on the part of children, who consider taste and health
the most important indicators when it comes to eating. They demonstrated a high level of
personal well-being, measured using Cummins & Lau’s adapted version of the Personal Well-
Being Index–School Children (PWI-SC) (2005), overall life satisfaction (OLS) and satisfaction
with various life domains (friends, family, sports, food and body).
Regression models were conducted to explain satisfaction with food, taking as independent
variables the interest children have in food, the importance they give to different reasons for
eating, scores from the PWI-SC, OLS and satisfaction with various life domains. In the final
model, it was found that OLS, health indicators, satisfaction with health from the PWI-SC and
satisfaction with your body contribute to explaining satisfaction with food.
The results obtained suggest that satisfaction with food is a relevant indicator in the exploration
of children’s subjective well-being, calling into question the widespread belief that these aspects
are of exclusive interest to adults. They also seem to reinforce the importance of including food
indicators in any study aimed at exploring the well-being of the 10 to 12 year-old population
Introduction: Although considered negligible
events when compared to other food related pathologies,
eating disorders are a public health problem because
of its increasing incidence in certain countries.
Most studies usually examine the factors that increase
the risk of appearance in youth and adolescents of premorbid
or morbid populations but there are less frequent
studies on healthy and standard populations.
Objectives: Evaluate the level of knowledge about
eating disorders and educational intervention in youths
that are assumed to be healthy.
Methods: Interventional study and pre-and post-intervention
assessment, through a 10 closed and open
questions test previously validated in Physiotherapy,
Childhood Education degrees and also students in vocational
training of the hospitality industry.
Results: 154 students responded to the initial questionnaire
(85 university students and 39 students in
Hospitality training cycle). The mean age was 20.8 years
and they were mostly women (68%). Before intervention
the students proved to have an average level of
knowledge with higher levels in women and university
students than the vocational training students. Risk factors
and clinical manifestations were the least known aspects
by the students. The educational intervention in
the 35 Hospitality students who participated in the
workshop and answered the questionnaire postintervention
increased the level of knowledge and their results in
post-intervention tests were better than those of the
university students.
Discussion and Conclusions: Although the intervention
was effective in increasing the knowledge in
most students, the post-intervention test results proved
real necessity for education in the typical features of
eating disorders. To upgrade the level of knowledge in
health and nutrition matters, it is necessary include it in
the curricular programmes of health, education and vocational
training in the hospitality industry students

The aim of this research is to know the relationship between children’s evaluations on their subjective well-being and food. We used an exploratory and multiple-method cross-sectional study with students from the last years of primary school. The first phase of the study has focused on the quantitative analysis of the data obtained through 371 questionnaires applied to students aged 10 to 12 of 18 in the Osona region. These data were triangulated with qualitative information obtained from 16 semi-structured group interviews conducted at 6 schools with a total of 112 children. The work done has allowed us to study children’s well-being without using models applied on adults, and to identify the relationship and influence that children have attributed to food on their well-being. The results obtained open the door to further studies taking into account both issues, and identify indicators related to nutrition that may contribute to explain children’s well-being.L’objectiu d’aquesta investigació és conèixer la relació entre les avaluacions que els nens/es fan del seu benestar subjectiu, i les que fan sobre la alimentació.
Pakistani Women: Promoting Agents of Healthy Eating Habits in Catalonia—Protocol of a Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Randomized Control Trial (RCT) Based on the Transtheoretical Model
(1) Introduction: Dietary and lifestyle changes along with the cultural and linguistic barriers convert the immigrant women of Pakistani origin into a risk population for developing metabolic syndrome (MetS) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The objective of this project is to evaluate the efficacy of a culturally and linguistically appropriate food education program based on the Transtheoretical model that will allow the participants to become ambassadors of healthy eating habits for their community. (2) Methods: In this community-based RCT, any Pakistani adult woman with residence in Badalona and Santa Coloma de Gramenet will be able to participate. We will use a mixed model approach. From the quantitative perspective, the participants will answer a survey accompanied by a multilingual nutritionist that will help us to determine the sociodemographic, clinical, anthropometric, dietary data, and quality of life. From the qualitative perspective, we will conduct 6 focus groups (3 in each municipality) to determine the cultural and religious beliefs with the aim of tailoring the intervention to the target population. Hereafter, the participants from one municipality will randomly become the control group and from the other, the intervention group. The intervention group will participate in 10 weekly food education sessions based on the Transtheoretical model while the control group will receive 3 general educational sessions on food and health. During the evaluation procedure, we will assess the impact of the intervention considering the outcomes of the study. (3) Discussion: This study will establish intercultural bridges between health professionals and the Pakistani community living in Catalonia. The project will open the door for future interventions, and it will be sustainable in time as the participating women will become health promotion agents for the rest of their community
Design of Culturally and Linguistically Tailored Nutrition Education Materials to Promote Healthy Eating Habits among Pakistani Women Participating in the PakCat Program in Catalonia
(1) Background: Pakistani women are among one of Catalonia’s most affected groups by obesity and cardiovascular disease. The design of health education strategies for them has become a compelling need. This paper aims to enlighten the elaboration and evaluation procedure of culturally and linguistically tailored nutrition education materials for Pakistani women participating in the PakCat Program, which aims to evaluate the efficacy of a nutrition education strategy allowing the participants to become ambassadors of healthy eating habits for their community. (2) Methods: In this Randomised Control Trial (RCT), 137 Pakistani women (70 from the intervention and 67 from the control group) took part. We conducted 10 sessions for the intervention group and 3 sessions for the control group in the form of small groups. The sessions were conducted in Urdu and Punjabi, and the material was translated into Urdu, Catalan, Spanish and English. For some sessions, we elaborated on new materials and for others, we adapted them from the existing nutrition material in aspects of language and culture. We evaluated the nutritional material from the observation carried out by the dietician who developed the sessions, participants’ feedback at the end of the sessions and a satisfaction questionnaire. (3) Results: We summarised the elaborated material in form of two multilingual nutritional guidelines about portion size and heart-healthy foods. We also registered several materials generated for the PakCat program such as an infographic about myths and beliefs related to food, a booklet to read and interpret the food labels, a recipe book for healthy snacks, and an infographic of 10 tips for healthy eating. We also organised a PhotoVoice exhibition of 70 healthy plates elaborated by the intervention group participants. The participants highly appreciated the material in terms of visualization, cultural and linguistic adequacy, and level of comprehension through all three evaluation methods. (4) Conclusions: The design of culturally and linguistically tailored nutrition education material for Pakistani women living in Catalonia is attainable and effective to meet their specific needs. The healthy dietary recommendation can be adapted to them preserving their traditional dietary pattern, and they acquire the confidence to start following a healthy diet
