A Comparison of Interpolation Methods for Sparse Data: Application to Wind and Concentration Fields
In order to produce gridded fields of pollutant concentration data and surface wind data for use in an air quality model, a number of techniques for interpolating sparse data values are compared. The techniques are compared using three data sets. One is an idealized concentration distribution to which the exact solution is known, the second is a potential flow field, while the third consists of surface ozone concentrations measured in the Los Angeles Basin on a particular day. The results of the study indicate that fitting a second-degree polynomial to each subregion (triangle) in the plane with each data point weighted according to its distance from the subregion provides a good compromise between accuracy and computational cost

Correspondence between geometrical and differential definitions of the sine and cosine functions and connection with kinematics
In classical physics, the familiar sine and cosine functions appear in two
forms: (1) geometrical, in the treatment of vectors such as forces and
velocities, and (2) differential, as solutions of oscillation and wave
equations. These two forms correspond to two different definitions of
trigonometric functions, one geometrical using right triangles and unit
circles, and the other employing differential equations. Although the two
definitions must be equivalent, this equivalence is not demonstrated in
textbooks. In this manuscript, the equivalence between the geometrical and the
differential definition is presented assuming no a priori knowledge of the
properties of sine and cosine functions. We start with the usual length
projections on the unit circle and use elementary geometry and elementary
calculus to arrive to harmonic differential equations. This more general and
abstract treatment not only reveals the equivalence of the two definitions but
also provides an instructive perspective on circular and harmonic motion as
studied in kinematics. This exercise can help develop an appreciation of

Molecular Electroporation and the Transduction of Oligoarginines
Certain short polycations, such as TAT and polyarginine, rapidly pass through
the plasma membranes of mammalian cells by an unknown mechanism called
transduction as well as by endocytosis and macropinocytosis. These
cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) promise to be medically useful when fused to
biologically active peptides. I offer a simple model in which one or more CPPs
and the phosphatidylserines of the inner leaflet form a kind of capacitor with
a voltage in excess of 180 mV, high enough to create a molecular electropore.
The model is consistent with an empirical upper limit on the cargo peptide of
40--60 amino acids and with experimental data on how the transduction of a
polyarginine-fluorophore into mouse C2C12 myoblasts depends on the number of
arginines in the CPP and on the CPP concentration. The model makes three

EST Express: PHP/MySQL based automated annotation of ESTs from expression libraries
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Several biological techniques result in the acquisition of functional sets of cDNAs that must be sequenced and analyzed. The emergence of redundant databases such as UniGene and centralized annotation engines such as Entrez Gene has allowed the development of software that can analyze a great number of sequences in a matter of seconds.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We have developed "EST Express", a suite of analytical tools that identify and annotate ESTs originating from specific mRNA populations. The software consists of a user-friendly GUI powered by PHP and MySQL that allows for online collaboration between researchers and continuity with UniGene, Entrez Gene and RefSeq. Two key features of the software include a novel, simplified Entrez Gene parser and tools to manage cDNA library sequencing projects. We have tested the software on a large data set (2,016 samples) produced by subtractive hybridization.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>EST Express is an open-source, cross-platform web server application that imports sequences from cDNA libraries, such as those generated through subtractive hybridization or yeast two-hybrid screens. It then provides several layers of annotation based on Entrez Gene and RefSeq to allow the user to highlight useful genes and manage cDNA library projects.</p
The Heavy Photon Search beamline and its performance
The Heavy Photon Search (HPS) is an experiment to search for a hidden sector
photon, aka a heavy photon or dark photon, in fixed target electroproduction at
the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). The HPS experiment
searches for the ee decay of the heavy photon with bump hunt and
detached vertex strategies using a compact, large acceptance forward
spectrometer, consisting of a silicon microstrip detector (SVT) for tracking
and vertexing, and a PbWO electromagnetic calorimeter for energy
measurement and fast triggering. To achieve large acceptance and good vertexing
resolution, the first layer of silicon detectors is placed just 10 cm
downstream of the target with the sensor edges only 500 m above and below
the beam. Placing the SVT in such close proximity to the beam puts stringent
requirements on the beam profile and beam position stability. As part of an
approved engineering run, HPS took data in 2015 and 2016 at 1.05 GeV and 2.3
GeV beam energies, respectively. This paper describes the beam line and its
performance during that data taking
S-methyl cysteine sulfoxide does not ameliorate weight gain or hyperlipidemia in mice fed a high-fat diet
Scope: Higher intake of cruciferous and allium vegetables is associated with lower cardiometabolic risk. Little research has investigated the cardiometabolic effects of S-methyl cysteine sulfoxide (SMCSO), found abundant in these vegetables. This study hypothesizes that SMCSO will blunt development of metabolic syndrome features in mice fed high-fat feed. Methods and results: Fifty C57BL/6 male mice are randomly assigned to standard-chow, high-fat, or high-fat supplemented with low-SMCSO (43 mg kg−1 body weight [BW] day−1), medium-SMCSO (153 mg kg−1 BW day−1), or high-SMCSO (256 mg kg−1 BW day−1) for 12-weeks. High-fat with SMCSO did not prevent diet-induced obesity, glucose intolerance, or hypercholesterolemia. Mice fed high-fat with SMCSO has higher hepatic lipids than mice fed standard-chow or high-fat alone. Urinary SMCSO increases at 6- and 12-weeks in the low-SMCSO group, before reducing 46% and 28% in the medium- and high-SMCSO groups, respectively, at 12-weeks, suggesting possible tissue saturation. Interestingly, two SMCSO-fed groups consume significantly more feed, without significant weight gain. Due to limitations in measuring consumed feed, caution should be taken interpreting these results. Conclusion: SMCSO (43–256 mg kg−1 BW day−1) does not ameliorate metabolic syndrome features in high-fat fed mice. Substantial knowledge gaps remain. Further studies should administer SMCSO separately (i.e., gavage), with metabolic studies exploring tissue levels to better understand its physiological action
