    A recording photoelastic stress meter

An instrument for automatically making photoelastic measurements of stress is described. It may be used for recording transient stresses at a point or for scanning spatial stress distributions. Its use is illustrated by an application entailing the measurement of transient thermal stresses in a viscoelastic material.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/43936/1/11340_2006_Article_BF02327237.pd

Soluble Tumor Necrosis Factor Receptor Mediates Cell Proliferation on Lipopolysaccharide-Stimulated Cultured Human Decidual Stromal Cells

The tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) cytokine receptor system modulates apoptosis in many cell types, so we have investigated the role of sTNFR1 in bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced cell death in cultured human decidual stromal cells, hypothesizing that sTNFR1 might play a central role in this action. In this work we characterized in vitro decidual stromal cell viability with LPS treatment and LPS and sTNFR1 co-treatment. We found that LPS treatment induced decidual stromal cell death in a dose-dependent manner and that sTNFR1 blocked the effect of the LPS treatment. There was a significant proliferation among cells co-incubated with LPS at 10 μg/mL and sTNFR1 at 0.1 μg/mL compared with LPS and sTNFR1 at 0.01, 0.05, 0.2 and 0.5 μg/mL (p < 0.01). This study demonstrated that LPS led to decidual stromal cell death in vitro but sTNFR1 down-regulates the cell death due to LPS under the same conditions. Taken together, these results suggested that sTNFR1 could participate in a protective mechanism against endotoxin

Solid-basaloid variant of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast with near complete response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy

Breast adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) is a rare subtype of triple negative breast cancer. Two morphologic variants are described, namely classic AdCC (C-AdCC) and solid basaloid (SB-AdCC). Recent studies have shown that the SB-AdCC variant has significantly worse prognosis than C-AdCC. Due to the rarity of SB-AdCC, no standard recommendations are available for its management. Data on the use and benefit of chemotherapy in patients with SB-AdCC are sparse and the response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy has not been reported. We present the clinical and pathologic findings of a patient with SB-AdCC treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy who achieved a remarkable pathologic response

Diseases of the central nervous system caused by lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus and other arenaviruses

This chapter highlights the neurologic sequelae of viruses from two major groups of arenaviruses, the Lassa-lymphocytic choriomeningitis serocomplex and the Tacaribe serocomplex. Fundamental features of these viruses are reviewed, including the rich history of their discovery and the large influence that the study of arenaviruses has had on the disciplines of virology and immunology more generally. Virus morphology, viral genome organization, individual viral protein functions, and small-animal models of disease are also discussed. The epidemiology, natural history, and laboratory evaluation of the arenaviruses that cause human illness are presented. In particular, the neurologic complications of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus in immunocompetent, pregnant, and solid-organ transplant patients are highlighted. The neurologic sequelae of the arenaviruses that cause hemorrhagic fever (i.e., Lassa fever, Argentine hemorrhagic fever, Bolivian hemorrhagic fever, Venezuelan hemorrhagic fever) are also presented. Lastly, potential treatment and vaccine strategies of these diseases are reviewed. © 2014 Elsevier B.V

Perceived Benefits and Barriers and Mammography Screening Compliance in Women Age 40 and Older

The mammography screening guidelines have been vague and differ from recommending organization to organization. Thus it is up to women to make decisions about mammography screening based on their personal health beliefs. This study examined the relationship between perceived benefits and perceived barriers to mammography and compliance with mammography screening guidelines in women age 40 and older. A correlational design was used with a convenience sample of 84 women from two outpatient family practice offices in the suburbs of a mid-western city. The Breast Cancer Screening Behaviors questionnaire created by Victoria Champion in 1995 was used to measure perceived benefits and barriers to mammography. Data indicated that 74% of the subjects were compliant with recommended guidelines. However, the hypothesized relationships between perceived benefits and barriers to mammography and compliance were not supported. Subjects’ education level was related to compliance (Chi-Square with Yates CC = 9.62, p = .002). Nursing implications were discussed

Illuminating the past, present, and future with natural light: An analysis of daylighting techniques through digital simulation

    No full text
Daylighting has been used throughout history as a primary light source in building structures. For this study, a variety of historic structures throughout history were analyzed in terms of the effect of daylight. The use of natural light has advantages and disadvantages, both aesthetically and physically, and this pendulum between the extremes has been covered by architectural design throughout many decades. However, as sustainable design practices surge forward in industry, daylighting has again become a focus as a valuable light source. The goal of this thesis project was to address how past and present structures have utilized natural light as an effective lighting solution, and relate this to future structures. Through the analysis of exterior façade systems, fenestration design, interior spaces, and building orientation, past and present structures can help provide a complete picture of both successful and unsuccessful daylighting solutions. Analyses were completed through visual studies and software analysis to determine interior daylight penetration and how past daylighting methods could be viable design options for current architectural and interior spaces

The Most Important Food Labels among Online Shoppers when Shopping for Fresh Produce

    No full text
Online shopping is increasingly becoming a common shopping venue for young generations of consumers. However, preferences for fresh produce among those who frequently shop online are still unclear. This study explains food labels that online shoppers consider most important when shopping for fresh produce. This study uses data collected from a stratified randomly selected sample of 1,205 online shoppers within the South region of the U.S. who made at least two online purchases within six months prior to participating in this study. We collected data in 2016 through the Qualtrics actively managed market research panels and those using social media such as Facebook and Twitter. Results show that 81 percent of online shoppers actually believe that food labels are very important to them. The most important label for the majority (49 percent) of those who believe so is “grown locally”. Those whose “organic” label is the most important constitute 15 percent. We found that 30 percent consider a combination of locally and organically grown fresh produce to be the most important to them. Only six percent of online shoppers have other labels they consider the most important. The most common important labels among this group include nutrition contents, price, and country of origin. This study is significant to fresh produce growers and agricultural marketers because it provides an explanation of food labels those online shoppers consider to be the most important when shopping for fresh produce. It is significant to food products regulators who are interested in enforcing regulations related to food labels. Future researchers will find this analysis useful when furthering knowledge about this increasingly popular market. online shoppers
