Terminology and Translation Quality Assurance

Although terminology management is on everyone's agenda nowadays, there is still a major gap between best practices and real life implementations/old habits. In this article we describe how this affects translation and quality assurance of translation. We also present a methodology to process poorly managed terminology data and use the information retrieved during processing and translation to improve the organization and consistency of a term base.Tot i que avui dia tothom està al cas de la gestió terminològica, encara hi ha una gran distancia entre una gestió diligent de la terminologia i la pràctica habitual. Aquest article descriu com aquestes practiques poden afectar la traducció i el procés de control de qualitat. També presenta una metodologia que permet processar dades terminològiques gestionades amb carències i utilitzar la informació recuperada durant el processament i la traducció per tal de millorar la organització y la consistència d'una base de dades.A pesar de que hoy día todo el mundo presta atención a la gestión terminológica, todavía hay una gran distancia entre una gestión diligente de la terminología y la práctica habitual. Ouder worden is geen ziekte

“Nieuwe methode om leververvetting te bestrijden: ‘verjong ‘de weefsels” las ik vanmorgen op DeMorgen.be. In het artikel (dat werd overgenomen uit de Volkskrant) werd vol enthousiasme gesproken over het terugdraaien van veroudering. Verouderingsexpert Andrea Maier van de Universiteit van Amsterdam stelde zelfs dat het jammer was dat de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie veroudering nog niet als een ziekte erkent. Sommige onderzoekers lijken te vergeten dat ouder worden gaat over meer dan enkel het fysiek ouder worden. Heel wat studies waarschuwen zelfs voor het gelijkstellen van ouder worden met ziekte1. Toch wordt er over ouder worden en ouderen steeds meer in termen van ziekte en medische behandelingen gesproken. In wetenschappelijke termen wordt dit als de ‘medicalization of aging’2 omschreven. Het eerder vernoemde artikel, maar ook de ‘anti-aging’ industry met hun botox, plastische chirurgie en anti-rimpelcrèmes, zijn hier een mooi voorbeeld van. Het laten erkennen van veroudering als een ziekte brengt heel wat risico’s met zich mee. Naast een te eenzijdig focus op het verouderingsproces, toont onderzoek aan dat deze medische visie op ouder worden sterk geassocieerd is met negatieve stereotypes over ouderen3. Sinds 1810 zijn we steeds negatiever gaan denken over ouderen en ouder worden. Vandaag de dag spreken we vooral over ouderen als we het hebben over de vergrijzing, het toegenomen aantal rusthuisbedden, onbetaalbare pensioenen en stijgende kosten binnen de gezondheidszorg. Bij deze een omroep om meer aandacht te hebben voor andere aspecten van het ouder worden in plaats van enkel het medische verhaal en het bijbehorende kostenplaatje. We mogen niet vergeten dat ouder worden een natuurlijk proces is waarbij men zowel op fysiek als op sociaal, emotioneel en financieel vlak heel wat veranderingen ondergaat. Ouder worden is bijgevolg geen ziekte, maar de overgang naar een nieuwe levensfase. We omschrijven de pubertijd toch ook niet als een ziekte

La possessió a la Índia, considerada com un fenomen marginal per als indianistes, ha estat un tema d'estudi deixat de banda durant molt de temps. Diverses obres mostren, això no obstant, que les possessions divines o nefastes es troben sobre tot el territori indi. La meva investigació està dirigida a estudiar la relació entre el sistema de possessió institucional i el sistema de castes, i analitza més particularment la construcció de l'organització social i de la cosmologia en una regió de l'Himalàia indi. En aquest article parlarem de la possessió i de les divinitats locals, particularment de la relació entre el món social i el món còsmic des d'aquesta perspectiva.In India, the possession, considered as a marginal phenomenon by the indianists, has been a study subject forgotten for a long time. However, many studies show that divine or harmful possessions appear all over the Indian territory. Our research is based on the relationship between the institutional possession system and the caste system, analysing in particular the social organization and the cosmology in an Indian Himalaya region. In this article, we will talk about the local divinities and possessions, by studying the relationship between the social world and the cosmic world

Sport in the European Union:All sound and no fury?

This contribution discusses the formal inclusion of sport in the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe. It shall assess whether Articles I-17 and III-282 can be legitimately expected to provide the necessary impetus to create a coherent and deliberate European sports policy. In order to come to a balanced judgement in this respect, the past and present dealings with sports issues of the European institutions, predominantly the European Commission and the Court of Justice, shall be analysed. It will become clear that the introduction of sport as an official Union policy in the Constitutional Treaty would not entail drastic changes in the EU approach to sport, but could nevertheless generate a number of positive effects

(Dis)entangling medicine and media : a qualitative analysis of the relationship between the fields of healthcare and journalism

Previous research has illustrated that journalists play an active role in the production of health news. The current study explores the relationship between the fields of healthcare and journalism from a healthcare perspective. Drawing on Bourdieu’s theory of fields and Gieryn’s concept of boundary-work, this study employed elite interviewing to analyse how the relations between these two fields were reflected and negotiated in the discourses of Belgian health-policy stakeholders. Our analysis illustrated that health-policy stakeholders perceived medicine and the news media as two different cultures and, therefore, discursively positioned news media actors as outsiders. Additionally, we showed that the nature of the relationship between health-policy stakeholders and the news media was linked to health-policy stakeholders’ position within the healthcare field. Through this analysis, we illustrate the value of using the concept of boundary-work as an analytical instrument to study the relationships between fields
