    Teodora: cento volti e nessuno

Empress Theodora portrayed in the famous mosaic of San Vitale in Ravenna has contributed to establish her position in the following visual imaginary and has been quoted in many works of art, to the extent of having been considered her only depiction realized in her epoch. But it is an official and idealized portrait, which gives us very few information about Theodora’s actual look, so that many other works of art, in the following centuries, have been considered as her portraits simply because there were no information about the persons they actually represented

Introduction to hemispherical photography in forestry

    Get PDF
Hemispherical photography is profusely used in climatology and forest sciences in association with geomatics technology. It is possible to get a detailed record of the canopy and estimate, both of the same structure and understory light transmission, both variables important for forest inventory and management of natural regeneration. Hemispherical photography equipment have very diverse applications, even in artistic photography, and their cost is low compared to specific instruments. Particular knowledge of optics, photography and digital image processing is required to correctly use this technique. The objective of the work is to explain the principle of operation of the hemispherical photography on estimation of structural parameters of forests. This is discussed in terms of optics and photography, digital image processing and estimation of structural parameters. Understanding of these aspects is relevant when it comes to purchasing a computer, capture photographs in the field and use specific software for processing.  Photos are raster files, which can be understood as an array of n rows by m columns, where each cell is a pixel. So a raster is displayed as an image, it is necessary to establish a color space and color depth. It is important to note that in the capture of the photography major errors occur, depending on the geographical region, because it is very difficult to meet the ideal lighting conditions. Assessment of temporomandibular disorder and occlusion in treated class III malocclusion patients

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to compare the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in individuals submitted to either orthodontic or ortho-surgical Class III malocclusion treatment and to assess the influence of occlusal aspects on TMD severity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 50 individuals divided into two groups, according to the type of treatment (orthodontic or orthodontic with orthognathic surgery). The presence of signs and symptoms of TMD was evaluated by an anamnestic questionnaire and a clinical examination, including TMJ and muscle palpation, active mandibular range of motion, joint noises and occlusal examination. RESULTS: Based on the anamnestic questionnaire, 48% had no TMD, 42% had mild TMD and 10% had moderate TMD. The presence and severity of TMD did not show any relationship with the type of orthodontic treatment (p>;0.05). The chi-square test showed a positive association (

Combining ontologies and workflows to design formal protocols for biological laboratories

    Get PDF
Background Laboratory protocols in life sciences tend to be written in natural language, with negative consequences on repeatability, distribution and automation of scientific experiments. Formalization of knowledge is becoming popular in science. In the case of laboratory protocols two levels of formalization are needed: one for the entities and individuals operations involved in protocols and another one for the procedures, which can be manually or automatically executed. This study aims to combine ontologies and workflows for protocol formalization. Results A laboratory domain specific ontology and the COW (Combining Ontologies with Workflows) software tool were developed to formalize workflows built on ontologies. A method was specifically set up to support the design of structured protocols for biological laboratory experiments. The workflows were enhanced with ontological concepts taken from the developed domain specific ontology. The experimental protocols represented as workflows are saved in two linked files using two standard interchange languages (i.e. XPDL for workflows and OWL for ontologies). A distribution package of COW including installation procedure, ontology and workflow examples, is freely available from http://www.bmr-genomics.it/farm/cow webcite. Conclusions Using COW, a laboratory protocol may be directly defined by wet-lab scientists without writing code, which will keep the resulting protocol's specifications clear and easy to read and maintain

    Get PDF
