    Understanding the effects of government spending on consumption

    Recent evidence on the effect of government spending shocks on consumption cannot be easily reconciled with existing optimizing business cycle models. We extend the standard New Keynesian model to allow for the presence of rule-of-thumb (non-Ricardian) consumers. We show how the interaction of the latter with sticky prices and deficit financing can account for the existing evidence on the effects of government spending

    Topographical cues regulate the crosstalk between MSCs and macrophages

    Implantation of scaffolds may elicit a host foreign body response triggered by monocyte/macrophage lineage cells. Growing evidence suggests that topographical cues of scaffolds play an important role in MSC functionality. In this work, we examined whether surface topographical features can regulate paracrine interactions that MSCs establish with macrophages. Three-dimensional (3D) topography sensing drives MSCs into a spatial arrangement that stimulates the production of the anti-inflammatory proteins PGE(2) and TSG-6. Compared to two-dimensional (2D) settings, 3D arrangement of MSCs co-cultured with macrophages leads to an important decrease in the secretion of soluble factors related with inflammation and chemotaxis including IL-6 and MCP-1. Attenuation of MCP-1 secretion in 3D co-cultures correlates with a decrease in the accumulation of its mRNA levels in MSCs and macrophages. Using neutralizing antibodies, we identified that the interplay between PGE2, IL-6, TSG-6 and MCP-1 in the co-cultures is strongly influenced by the micro-architecture that supports MSCs. Local inflammatory milieu provided by 3D-arranged MSCs in co-cultures induces a decrease in monocyte migration as compared to-monolayer tells. This effect is partially mediated by reduced levels of IL-6 and MCP-1, proteins that up-regulate each other's secretion. Our findings highlight the importance of topographical cues in the soluble factor-guided communication between MSCs and macrophages

    Misalignment and tilt effect on aspheric intraocular lens designs after a corneal refractive surgery

    Purpose: To numerically evaluate and compare the tolerance to misalignment and tilt of aspheric intraocular lenses (IOLs) designed for three eyes: with standard cornea and with simulated corneas after myopic and hyperopic laser ablation surgery. Methods: Three aspheric IOLs of +20.00 diopter (D) with different spherical aberration (SA) (Z04) values have been designed using a theoretical model eye. Drastic changes on the theoretical eye anterior corneal asphericity have been performed to simulate myopic and hyperopic refractive surgeries. The effect of IOL misalignment and tilt on the image quality has been evaluated using a commercial optical software design for the three eye models. Image quality was assessed from the modulation transfer function (MTF), root mean square (RMS) values of defocus, astigmatism, coma and spherical aberration (Z04), and retinal images obtained from a visual simulator using an aleatory optotype of 0.00 LogMar visual acuity (VA). Results: IOL misalignment and tilt reduced MTF values in general, and increased wavefront aberrations errors. Aberration-free IOLs maintained best the MTF values when misalignments were applied, together with good on-axis optical quality. IOLs with negative SA (Z04) correction decreased the MTF value under 0.43 for misalignments values higher than 0.50 mm with the three corneas. The effect of misalignment on RMS astigmatism and coma was correlated with the IOL SA (Z04) and with the three corneas. Conclusions: This theoretical study shows that the largest degradation in image quality arises for the IOL with the highest amount of spherical aberration (Z04). Moreover, it has been found that the aspherical design has a more influential role in misalignment tolerance than in tilt tolerance

    Este artigo apresenta um aspecto do pouco tratado tema do turismo desde a historiografia em Porto Rico. No Caribe a historiografia sobre este tema tem como denominador comum uma posição contestatária perante a imagem paradisíaca que promove a indústria turística nas regiões tropicais. A relação de Porto Rico com Estados Unidos tem criado momentos contraditórios na promoção da Ilha como destino turístico. Um primeiro exemplo que provocam os eventos políticos que alteraram a ordem estabelecida na Ilha, desde 1898, e que afeitou sua promoção turística foi a mudança de nome. Primeiro foi Puerto Rico, antes da invasão norteamericana, seguidamente Porto Rico, desde 1898 hasta 1932 e Puerto Rico novamente desde 1932. Palavras-chave: Historiografia. Porto Rico. Tourism in Puerto Rico has been a barely studied theme by Puerto Rican historiography. Puerto Rico’s relationship with the United States has been full of contradictions about how the Island is promoted as a touristic destination. Naming or branding is one of the first stages of tourism promotion of a place. As well as other symbols, our political situation caused the name Puerto Rico to be tampered with after 1898 when it was changed to Porto Rico remaining this way until 1932 when it was again changed to Puerto Rico.     Self-assembly of bent-core amphiphiles joining the ethylene-oxide/lithium ion tandem

    The synthesis, supramolecular self-assembly and structural characterization of a new family of tetraethylene oxide (TEG)-based bent-core compounds and their 1/1 lithium-containing complexes are reported. TEG-based bent-core amphiphiles, even joining the TEG/Li+ tandem, are suitable building-blocks to achieve supramolecular nanostructures, in some cases showing chiral features from achiral molecules either in the mesophase or in solvents. The thermal and liquid crystal behavior of these materials studied by polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction confirmed that Li-based materials stabilized polar smectic C and helical nanofilament-type mesophases, in contrast to the non-liquid crystalline pure TEG-compounds. Alternatively, both the pure amphiphiles and the lithium-doped materials self-assemble into physical gels in non-polar solvents, displaying three-dimensional networks composed of long fibers with lamellar molecular organizations as shown by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Interestingly, biphenyl- and azobenzene-based bent core amphiphiles aggregate in solvent into chiral nanostructured morphologies with supramolecular trends comparable to their molecular arrangement in their liquid crystalline phases

    High-Valent Pyrazolate-Bridged Platinum Complexes: A Joint Experimental and Theoretical Study

    Complexes {Pt(C^C*)(µ-pz)}2] (HC^C*A= 1-(4-(ethoxycarbonyl)phenyl)-3-methyl-1H-imidazol-2-ylidene 1a, HC^C*B= 1-phenyl-3-methyl-1H-imidazol-2-ylidene 1b) react with methyl iodide (MeI) at room temperature in the dark to give compounds {PtIV(C^C*)Me(µ-pz)}2(µ-I)]I (C^C*A2a, C^C*B2b). The reaction of 1a with benzyl bromide (BnBr) in the same conditions afforded Br(C^C*A)PtIII(µ-pz)2PtIII(C^C*A)Bn] (5a), which by heating in BnBr(l) became {PtIV(C^C*A)Bn(µ-pz)}2(µ-Br)]Br (6a). Experimental investigations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the mechanisms of these reactions from 1a revealed that they follow a SN2 pathway in the two steps of the double oxidative addition (OA). Based on the DFT investigations, species such as (C^C*A)PtIII(µ-pz)2PtIII(C^C*A)R]X (RX = MeI Int-Me, BnBr Int-Bn) and (C^C*A)PtII(µ-pz)2PtIV(C^C*A)(R)X] (RX = MeI Int'-Me, BnBr Int'-Bn) were proposed as intermediates for the first and the second OA reactions, respectively. In order to put the mechanisms on firmer grounds, Int-Me was prepared as (C^C*A)PtIII(µ-pz)2PtIII(C^C*A)Me]BF4(3a') and used to get I(C^C*A)PtIII(µ-pz)2PtIII(C^C*A)Me](4a), (C^C*A)PtII(µ-pz)2PtIV(C^C*A)(Me)I](Int'-Me), and {PtIV(C^C*)Me(µ-pz)}2(µ-I)]BF4(2a'). The single-crystal X-ray structures of 2a, 2b, 3a', and 5a along with the mono- and bi-dimensional 1H and 195Pt{1H} NMR spectra of all the named species allowed us to compare structural and spectroscopic data for high-valent complexes with the same core {Pt(C^C*)(µ-pz)}2] but different oxidation states. © 2022 American Chemical Society.     Mechatronic development and dynamic control of a 3-DOF parallel manipulator

The robot has to be able to generate and control one translational motion (heave) and two rotary motions (rolling and pitching). Applications for this kind of parallel manipulator can be found at least in driving-motion simulation and in the biomechanical field. An open control architecture has been developed for this manipulator, which allows implementing and testing different dynamic control schemes for a PM with 3-DOF. Thus, the robot developed can be used as a test bench where control schemes can be tested. In this article, several control schemes are proposed and the tracking control responses are compared. The schemes considered are based on passivity-based control and inverse dynamic control. The control algorithm considers point-to-point control or tracking control. When the controller considers the system dynamics, an identified model has been used.     Mineralogical characterization of silica sinters from the El Tatio geothermal field, Chile

    11 páginas.Silica sinters, deposited from alkali chloride waters in the El Tatio geothermal field in northern Chile (22°20'S, 68°01'W), have been characterized by XRD, SEM, TG-DTA, and FTIR. The dominant silica phase is opal-A. Minor contents of opal-A/-CT and opal-CT are also present together with halite (NaCl), sylvite (KCl), and realgar (AsS). Accessory phases include teruggite [Ca4MgAs2B12O22(OH)12·12(H2O)], sassolite (H3BO3), and detrital quartz (SiO2). FWHM values reflect the immature nature of the studied opal-A. DTA heating experiments of opal-A show cristobalite crystallization at ~1000 °C, whereas DTA cooling experiments show the β -alfacristobalite transformation at ~200 °C. The total weight loss is related to changes in the sinter microtextures, mineral phases, and organic matter contents. FTIR spectra show the effects of silica maturation as consequence of the loss of trapped and absorbed water attached to silanols.Peer reviewe
