Multisensor Data Fusion for Cultural Heritage Assets Monitoring and Preventive Conservation

    Get PDF
This paper shows the first phase of an ongoing interdisciplinary research project aimed at codifying procedures for the control and non-destructive analysis of the conservation status of CH artefacts to guide preventive preservation actions. It specifically explains the results of an experiment aimed at defining the procedural phases of semantic-informative enrichment of a digital architectural model where the morpho-metric components acquired with instrumental survey techniques are linked with cognitive and technical aspects (microclimatic, material, and geometric deviation data), with the aim of making this model a support for the simulation of scenarios connected to preventive preservation programmes. The research was carried out on the church of San Michele Arcangelo in Padula, affected by plaster detachment from the frescoes on the intrados of the vaulted systems. The work was conceived to support a mainly qualitative assessment regarding a possible relationship between micro-environmental variations and visually perceived degradation phenomena to provide a first indication of the conservation status of the investigated surfaces. The analyses were conducted through algorithms that, as such, are repeatable and objective. In addition, these processes, as they were applied to the models derived from the architectural survey, made it possible to make the most of these outputs. Therefore, by combining the algorithmic manipulation of the digital representations with the necessary critical interpretation of the data by the specialist, it was possible to address some actions of direct intervention and guide the most appropriate choices for subsequent in-depth diagnostics, more targeted, reducing the damage to the historical heritage

The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences

Urban design strategies for the upcycling of urban infrastructure residual pockets: 3D city modelling from open data and low-cost rapid mapping tools

This paper deals with the 3D City Modelling specific procedure developed as a tool to support strategies for urban regeneration, within the framework of the B-ROAD research project. The B-ROAD research project, whose acronym stands for Below the Road, is developing urban design strategies for upcycling urban infrastructure residual pockets. The B-ROAD’s methodology is conceived as research by design as it is carried out by creating pilot scenarios, disclosing the latent and still unexpressed potential of these wasted areas and displaying their potential transformations, to turn them into precious resources for the contemporary city. The 3D City Modelling of the study area has proved to be essential and strategic yet often complex and critical as most of the spatial and architectural features of B-ROAD spaces, as well as their potential, cannot be detected nor represented through the traditional means of representation of urbanised land, as aerial survey-based representations, or GIS. Likewise, traditional, or even cutting-edge, survey techniques that can be used to acquire missing data are often costly and time-consuming, thus making it hardly impossible to achieve the purpose of extensive and deep knowledge of such a vast area. Thus, 3D City Modelling aimed at examining spaces and providing a final representation of pilot scenarios has been a crucial stage requiring a specific in-depth study

The article starts from the analysis of the lack of tree planting in Candelaria, a municipality with jurisdiction in the department of Atlántico, which has a population of 17 thousand inhabitants, located south of the department of Atlántico, 60 km from the city. de Barranquilla, bordering the municipalities of Ponedera, Campo de la Cruz, Manatí and Sabanalarga, the presence of trees in urban areas contributes to the production of oxygen, which is vital for the respiratory health of residents. Also, act as natural filters by absorbing carbon dioxide, helping to reduce levels of air pollutants and mitigate the effects of climate change. Purpose: Following the 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, many reports have investigated the psychosocial effects of the lockdown. The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of the lockdown on the daily life habits of orthopaedic patients.Patients and Methods: Around 30 days after the start of the Italian lockdown, from April 17th to the end of the containment measures on May 18th, the Sapienza University of Rome carried out a 19-item survey on the effects the lockdown caused in patients suffering from an orthopaedic pathology (with regard to changes in lifestyle, pain, treatment) by stratifying the sample by age, sex, profession, pain location, pathogenesis and prior surgeries. Results: A total of 292 subjects with orthopaedic pathologies took part in the survey. Taking into consideration the totality of the sample, physical activity was significantly reduced (p <0.001). The increase of a sedentary lifestyle was statistically significant (p <0.001), as well as an increase in pain (p <0.001) and the need to adjust the pharmacological treatment (p <0.001). The increase in pain was particularly significant in the 50-70 age group, among workers, and in polyarthralgic patients. About 55.48% stated that the lockdown period worsened their underlying pathological condition and 53.77% expressed the need to undergo a new clinical evaluation at the end of the lockdown. Conclusion: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown and resulting sudden changes in lifestyle led to a change in patient perception of orthopedic pathology including a worsening of musculoskeletal pain requiring an adjustment or change in pharmacological and physical therapy
