Assessment of slip transfer criteria for prismatic-to-prismatic slip in pure Ti from 3D grain boundary data
Slip transfer and blocking across grain boundaries was studied in a Ti foil
with a strong rolling texture deformed in tension. Prior to deformation, the
shape of the grains and the orientation of the grain boundaries were quantified
through laboratory scale diffraction contrast tomography (LabDCT). Mechanical
deformation led to the activation of prismatic slip, and slip
transfer/blocking was assessed in > 300 grain boundaries by means of slip trace
analysis and electron backscatter diffraction. A categorical model was employed
to accurately assess slip transfer, and the "F1 score" of various slip transfer
criteria proposed in the literature was evaluated for the first time from 3D
grain boundary information. Remarkably, for the prismatic-dominated slip
transfer in the current Ti sample, the results show that the best predictions
of slip transfer/blocking are provided by the angle \k{appa}, which is directly
related to the residual Burgers vector, and by the Luster-Morris parameter m'.
In contrast, metrics based on the twist angle {\theta} and on the LRB criterion
were not able to predict accurately slip transfer/blocking. Thus, the extensive
analysis of the 3D grain boundary data and the novel application of LabDCT was
able to help clarify the role of grain boundary orientation on the mechanisms
of plastic deformation in polycrystals with strong prismatic-dominated slip
Pinacotecas: iluminación y conservación de los cuadros
A visit to an art museum is essentially a visual experience. Hence the system of lighting is extremely important since it affects the way they can be appreciated and how they are presented to the viewer illumination also influences the environment and even the functional and security conditions of the museum. Consequently the design of the illumination should take account of the needs of the visitors, the museographic requirements and the environment.
Additionally, the absolute necessity for the pictures to be properly conserved also imposes certain conditions on the type of illumination.
In this context reference is made to the current knowledge and technical criteria on the conditions that must be met by museum lighting if the previously mentioned requirements are to be satisfied. It is emphasized that this is affected by other factors, unrelated to the illumination, such as the quality of walls, the architecture of the building and its surroundings. The basic reasons for the choice of natural or artificial light are discussed, i.e., the advantages or other wise of these alternatives, and some of the installations carried out in various museums are described.
Sampling protocol for skeletal structures of North Atlantic albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga) and ageing interpretation
This paper presents a standardized protocol for sampling skeletal hard parts (dorsal fin ray
and otoliths), preparation and age interpretation of albacore first dorsal fin ray. Ageing of
albacore is focused in interpretation and reading of annual temporal marks (translucent bands)
in first ray of dorsal fin. Preparation of fin ray sections (spines) is presented in detail using two
different methods. The spines are usually cut individually using a low speed cutter. Depending
of the size of spines, a new procedure has been developed for small spines based on encasing
spines in a matrix of plastic resin allowing multiple spines cutting. Interpretation of growth
marks on spine sections is explained and examples are presented for a range of size of albacore
aged using this method.
Estimates of Spanish bottom otter trawl boarfish (Capros aper) discards by area in the Northeast Atlantic area.
Discard estimates for the Spanish bottom otter trawl fleets fishing in the
Northeast Atlantic are presented for boarfish (Capros aper). Information
was obtained by observers on board under different discard sampling
programmes carried out by the Spanish research institute IEO. Raising
based on effort (number of trips) was used to estimate total discards in
weight and associated coefficients of variation (CV) and number for the
fleet. Discards length distributions are presented by year and fishing area.
Total estimates indicates different trends in discarding, showing a
decreasing trend in north coastal Spanish waters and a increasing trend in
western Ireland waters
Motives of practice in the field of non-competitive physical activity
