Emission line taxonomy and the nature of AGN-looking galaxies in the SDSS
Massive spectroscopic surveys like the SDSS have revolutionized the way we
study AGN and their relations to the galaxies they live in. A first step in any
such study is to define samples of different types of AGN on the basis of
emission line ratios. This deceivingly simple step involves decisions on which
classification scheme to use and data quality censorship. Galaxies with weak
emission lines are often left aside or dealt with separately because one cannot
fully classify them onto the standard Star-Forming, Seyfert of LINER
categories. This contribution summarizes alternative classification schemes
which include this very numerous population. We then study how star-formation
histories and physical properties of the hosts vary from class to class, and
present compelling evidence that the emission lines in the majority of
LINER-like systems in the SDSS are not powered by black-hole accretion. The
data are fully consistent with them being galaxies whose old stars provide all
the ionizing power needed to explain their line ratios and luminosities. Such
retired galaxies deserve a place in the emission line taxonomy.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, Proceedings of IAU Symposium 267, Co-Evolution of

State-of-the-art and Emerging Technologies for In Vitro Embryo Production in Buffaloes
Buffalo is a multipurpose and economically important animal due to the demand for its products (milk and meat). Thus, the use of reproductive biotechnologies is important to maximize the diffusion of genetically superior dams and sires. After the unsatisfactory results of the Multiple Ovulation and Embryo Transfer, the combined effect of ovum pick-up from live animals and in vitro embryo production (IVEP) has great potential to dissemination of selected genetics in buffalo herds, contributing to an increase in meat and milk production. During the past two decades, considerable advances have been made in IVEP following continuous scientific effort, but at the moment their cost is not satisfactory for commercial purpose. This technique is refined day by day in order to improve the buffalo embryo quality. Thus, the objective of this paper was to review the state-of-art in IVEP, as well as discussed the emerging technologies that can contribute to improving the results of this technology in buffalo species
produziram efeitos extraterritoriais
DuraSeal Exact is a safe adjunctive treatment for durotomy in spine: Postapproval study
Study designA nonrandomized, two-armed prospective study.ObjectiveWater-tight dural closure is paramount to the prevention of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage and associated complications. Synthetic polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrogel has been used as an adjunct to sutured dural repair; however, its expansion postoperatively is a concern for neurological complications. A low-swell formulation of PEG sealant was introduced as DuraSeal Exact Spine Sealant System (DESS). A Post-Approval Study was performed primarily to evaluate the safety and efficacy of DESS for spinal dural repair compared to current alternatives, in a large patient population, reflecting a real-world practice.MethodsA total of 36 sites in the United States enrolled 429 patients treated with DESS as an adjunct to dural repair in the spinal sealant group and 406 patients treated with all other modalities in the control arm, from October 2011 to June 2016. The primary endpoint was the incidence of CSF leak within 90 days of operation. The secondary endpoints evaluated were deep surgical site infection and neurological serious adverse events.ResultsThe CSF leakage in the DESS group (6.6%) was not significantly different from the control group (6.5%) (p = .83), and there was no significant difference in the time to first leak. The two groups had no significant differences in deep surgical site infection (1.6% versus control 2.1%, p = .61) or proportion of subjects with neurological serious adverse events (2.9% versus control 1.6%, p = .516).ConclusionsDuraSeal Exact Spinal Sealant is safe when compared to current alternatives for spinal dural repair
ULTRASOUND AS TOOL FOR DIAGNOSIS OF DISEASES OF THE REPRODUCTIVE TRACT BULLS
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to evaluate by ultrasound and breeding soundness examination (BSE) the major diseases affecting the reproductive system of Nelore bulls, bred extensively in the state of Para, Brazil. Fifty-nine pure Nelore bulls were used, aged between 5 to 10 years, raised extensively in a commercial farm in the municipality of Paragominas, Pará state, Brazil. Scrotal circumference, testicular length and width were measured. Semen collection for evaluation of ejaculate volume, turbulence, motility, vigor, concentration and sperm pathologies was performed. Ultrasound examination was performed by equipment type Ultrasonic Transducer - CHISON/D600vet, linear transducers, where the frequency used was 5 MHz, being held two images of each testis, the longitudinal-lateral, lateral and transverse planes. The images were processed using the program Image J. The data were analyzed using the statistical program SAS (2000) and means were compared using Tukey's test (p 0.05). Thus, it can be concluded that ultrasonography is an essential complementary tool in the diagnosis of reproductive disorders in animals subjected to BSE and its use should be recommended

Optomechanical Design and Analysis for Nanosatellite Laser Communications
The CubeSat Laser Infrared CrosslinK (CLICK) mission is a technology demonstration of a 1.5U laser communications terminal for an intersatellite link. The terminal is deployed on a pair of 3U CubeSats in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The pointing, acquisition, and tracking (PAT) approach includes both coarse and fine systems. The coarse tracking system uses a beacon laser transmitter and receiver camera. The fine tracking system uses a fast steering mirror and quadrant photodiode. The communications transmit and receive paths include a refractive telescope, transmit laser collimator, and avalanche photodetector (APD) receiver. The communications laser full-width, half maximum (FWHM) beam divergence angle is 14.6 arcseconds, and the beacon laser FWHM divergence is 0:75° (2700 arcseconds). The opto-mechanical design process includes prediction & verification of assembly alignment & calibration, thermoelastic effects, structural modes & static loading, and fastener analysis. The opto-mechanical assembly has the sensors and laser transmitters kinematically mounted to enable on-ground calibration to less than 25.4 mm decenter, or 0.1° tip/tilt. The thermoelastic alignment error between the payload and bus star tracker is estimated via finite element analysis to be less than 9 arcseconds. The payload optical bench is designed with custom thermal isolation and control to maintain 20 ± 10 ° C. The thermal modeling of the payload is described in detail. Structural static loading and fastener analyses of the CLICK payload under launch loads of 30 G verify margins of safety are greater than 10 and above the recommended values. Modal analyses predict the first resonant frequency to be 888 Hz, above typical vehicle structural vibration ranges with a factor of safety greater than 3.5
