    Side forces on a tangent ogive forebody with a fineness ratio of 2.5 at high angles of attack and low speed

    A wind tunnel study to determine the subsonic aerodynamic characteristics, at high angles of attack, of a tangent ogive forebody with a fineness ratio of 2.5, is reported. Static longitudinal and lateral-directional stability data were obtained at Reynolds numbers ranging from 0.4 x 1 million to 3.7 x 1 million (based on base diameter) at a Mach number of 0.25. Angle of attack was varied from 36 deg to 88 deg at zero sideslip. It was found that at low Reynolds numbers the forebody does not have a side force att high angles of attack; however, at Reynolds numbers above about 2 x 1 million, a side force occurs in the angle of attack range from 45 deg to 80 deg. The maximum side force is as large as the maximum normal force. The maximum normal force coefficient varies between 1.0 and 2.0 over the Reynolds number range tested and occurs at angles of attack near 65 deg

    Disclosure of Depression in Primary Care: A Qualitative Study of Women’s Perceptions

    Background Health care providers are better able to diagnose depression and initiate treatment when patients disclose symptoms. However, many women are reluctant to disclose depressive symptoms. Little is known about the experience of disclosing depression symptoms in primary care among racially and ethnically diverse women across the life course. We qualitatively explore experiences of disclosure of depressive symptoms to primary care providers among self-identified African American, Hispanic and non-Hispanic White women. Methods Twenty-four women with depression were recruited for open-ended interviews. We recorded, transcribed, and coded interviews using inductive content analysis. Findings Two distinct domains emerged: participant factors that hinder and facilitate disclosure and provider cues that encourage and dissuade discussing depression. Participants described perceptions about primary care not being the appropriate place, fear of not having a choice in treatment decisions, and the emotional cost of retelling as impediments to disclosure; perceiving an increased likelihood of getting help was described as a facilitator. Women identified provider behaviors of asking about depression and showing concern as facilitators, and provider time constraints as a barrier to disclosure. Conclusions Women perceive that primary care is not the appropriate place to disclose depression symptoms. Increased public education about behavioral health management in primary care, as well as more robust integration of the two, is needed. Efforts to improve depression disclosure in primary care must also encompass systematic use of depression screening tools and implementation of targeted interventions to cultivate provider empathy

    The influence of massive stars in the interstellar medium of IC 1613: the supernova remnant S8 and the nebula S3 associated with a WO star

    We present a detailed kinematical analysis of two selected nebulae in the Local Group irregular galaxy IC 1613. The nebulae are: S8, the only known supernova remnant in this galaxy, and S3, a Wolf-Rayet nebula associated with the only WO star in this galaxy. For S8, we have obtained and analyzed its radial velocity field, where we found complex profiles which can be fitted by several velocity components. These profiles also show the presence of high velocity, low density gas. From this, we have obtained the expansion velocity, estimated the preshock density and calculated the basic kinematical parameters of this SNR. We suggest that in S8 we are seing a SNR partially hidden by dust. This suggestion comes from the fact that the SNR is located between two superbubbles where a ridge of obscured material unveils the existence of dust. Moreover, we show that this hypothesis prevails when energetic arguments are taken into account. In the case of S3, this nebula shows bipolar structure. By means of its kinematics, we have analyzed its two lobes, the ``waist'', as well as its relation with the nearest superbubbles. For the first time we are able to see closed the NW lobe, showing a clover leaf shape. This fact allows a better quantitative knowledge of the nebula as a whole. Furthermore, we found evidence of an expansion motion in the NW lobe. In the light of our results, we can express that these nebulae are the product of very massive stellar evolution. It is surprising the influence these stars still have in shaping their surrounding gas, and on the energy liberation towards the interstellar medium of this galaxy.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal, July issue. 11 pages, 12 figures.     Iridium-Doped Ruthenium Oxide Catalyst for Oxygen Evolution

    NASA requires a durable and efficient catalyst for the electrolysis of water in a polymer-electrolyte-membrane (PEM) cell. Ruthenium oxide in a slightly reduced form is known to be a very efficient catalyst for the anodic oxidation of water to oxygen, but it degrades rapidly, reducing efficiency. To combat this tendency of ruthenium oxide to change oxidation states, it is combined with iridium, which has a tendency to stabilize ruthenium oxide at oxygen evolution potentials. The novel oxygen evolution catalyst was fabricated under flowing argon in order to allow the iridium to preferentially react with oxygen from the ruthenium oxide, and not oxygen from the environment. Nanoparticulate iridium black and anhydrous ruthenium oxide are weighed out and mixed to 5 18 atomic percent. They are then heat treated at 300 C under flowing argon (in order to create an inert environment) for a minimum of 14 hours. This temperature was chosen because it is approximately the creep temperature of ruthenium oxide, and is below the sintering temperature of both materials. In general, the temperature should always be below the sintering temperature of both materials. The iridium- doped ruthenium oxide catalyst is then fabricated into a PEM-based membrane- electrode assembly (MEA), and then mounted into test cells. The result is an electrolyzer system that can sustain electrolysis at twice the current density, and at the same efficiency as commercial catalysts in the range of 100-200 mA/sq cm. At 200 mA/sq cm, this new system operates at an efficiency of 85 percent, which is 2 percent greater than commercially available catalysts. Testing has shown that this material is as stable as commercially available oxygen evolution catalysts. This means that this new catalyst can be used to regenerate fuel cell systems in space, and as a hydrogen generator on Earth

    An Initial Archaeological Assessment of John James Park, City of San Antonio, Texas

    In January, 1977, the City of San Antonio Department of Parks and Recreation (Ronald L. Darner, Director) and the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio (Thomas R. Hester, Director), entered into a contract for the archaeological assessment of John James Park. The park property (Fig. 1), is located just north of Fort Sam Houston, and the eastern boundary fronts on Salado Creek, a major tributary of the San Antonio River. The field survey was carried out under the general supervision of Dr. Thomas R. Hester and Mr. Jack D. Eaton, with the field crew consisting of Elizabeth Cantu Frkuska, Augustine J. Frkuska and Fred Valdez, Jr. The goal of this initial survey was to provide an assessment of archaeological or historical resources that might be present within the confines of the park, and, if such resources were found, to record and evaluate them

    Single-Particle Density of States of a Superconductor with a Spatially Varying Gap and Phase Fluctuations

    Recent experiments have shown that the superconducting energy gap in some cuprates is spatially inhomogeneous. Motivated by these experiments, and using exact diagonalization of a model d-wave Hamiltonian, combined with Monte Carlo simulations of a Ginzburg-Landau free energy functional, we have calculated the single-particle density of states LDOS(ω,r)(\omega,r) of a model high-Tc_c superconductor as a function of temperature. Our calculations include both quenched disorder in the pairing potential and thermal fluctuations in both phase and amplitude of the superconducting gap. Most of our calculations assume two types of superconducting regions: α\alpha, with a small gap and large superfluid density, and β\beta, with the opposite. If the β\beta regions are randomly embedded in an α\alpha host, the LDOS on the α\alpha sites still has a sharp coherence peak at T=0T = 0, but the β\beta component does not, in agreement with experiment. An ordered arrangement of β\beta regions leads to oscillations in the LDOS as a function of energy. The model leads to a superconducting transition temperature TcT_c well below the pseudogap temperature Tc0T_{c0}, and has a spatially varying gap at very low TT, both consistent with experiments in underdoped Bi2212. Our calculated LDOS(ω,r)(\omega,r) shows coherence peaks for TTcT T_c, in agreement with previous work considering phase but not amplitude fluctuations in a homogeneous superconductor.
