Three baleen whales washed ashore along Uttara Kannada coast of Karnataka
Three instances of stranding baleen whales were
observed along the coast of Uttara Kannada district
of Karnataka during July and August 2016. All
strandings were recorded from the southern part
of the district. The first whale was washed ashore
on 20th July 2016 at Ramangindi, Dhareshwar, 12
km south of Kumta (140 21’ 710"N and 740 24’
360E). The whale was in a decomposed condition
when washed ashore. The post mortem was carried
out by a veterinary doctor. It was identified as
Bryde’s whale Balaenoptera edeni. The total length
of the male whale was 44 feet weighing
approximately 10 tonnes (Fig. 1). The second whale
washed ashore on 27.7.2016 at Hollangadde 7 km
from Kumta (140 27’ 432" N and 740 22’ 615" E was
also in decayed condition. It was identified as
baleen whale and measured 46 fee
Unusual landings of large sized Yellowfin tuna by purse seiners at Karwar, Karnataka
Unusual landings of large sized Yellowfin tuna
Thunnus albacares (Bonnaterre, 1788) was observed
at Baithkol Fisheries Harbour, Karwar during the
period 16th to 22nd February 2020. Six tunas were
landed by two purse-seiners with individual weights
ranging from 68 kg to 103 kg. One purse-seine unit
landed with only one yellowfin tuna weighing 68
kg in the early morning hours of 16.2.2020. The
other multiday purse-seine unit of OAL 19.8 meter
overall length (OAL) fitted with a 350 hp Sonatrac
engine was operated at a depth of 54 meter off
Belekeri (N 140 38’ 100” E 0730 52’ 500”) during
night hours on 18.2.2020 and four yellowfin tuna
weighing 103, 97, 82 and 78 kg each were hauled
in and sent immediately by a carrier boat to landing

Spectrum of the three dimensional fuzzy well
We develop the formalism of quantum mechanics on three dimensional fuzzy
space and solve the Schr\"odinger equation for a free particle, finite and
infinite fuzzy wells. We show that all results reduce to the appropriate
commutative limits. A high energy cut-off is found for the free particle
spectrum, which also results in the modification of the high energy dispersion
relation. An ultra-violet/infra-red duality is manifest in the free particle
spectrum. The finite well also has an upper bound on the possible energy
eigenvalues. The phase shifts due to scattering around the finite fuzzy
potential well have been calculated
Unusual occurrence of large size oilsardine (Sardinella longiceps) at Karwar, Uttar Kannada coast of Karnataka
The oilsardine, Sardinella longiceps
(Valenciennes, 1847), is a major pelagic fishery
resource of Malabar and Konkan coast. At Karwar,
the fishing season for oilsardine is from August-May
and the peak season is from October to March. During
the current year, after the ban period, the oilsardine
fishery by the purseseine boats started from the first
of August, 2011
Olive Ridley turtle washed ashore
A carcass of an olive ridley turtle, Lepidochelysolivacea (Eschscholtz, 1829) was found washedashore on Cherai beach on 12.01.16. It was in abadly decomposed state, with only the head, frontflippers and part of the carapace intact, making itdifficult to take morphometric measurements
Heavy metal distribution in the biotic and abiotic matrices along Karnataka coast, west coast of India
Sediment and soft tissue of bivalve samples collected from various sites of Karnataka coast were
analysed for the estimation of the nanaal and anthropogenic heavy metal fluxes. Seasonal variations of
heavy metals in sediment and bivalves collected from selected hot spots from Binage, Karwar and
Thannirbavi, Mangalore were monitored. High concentrations of Hg was observed in the environment
near' the vicinity of a caustic soda plant at Binage, Karwar, indicating Hg pollution. Total Hg
concentration in the tissue of oysters sampled from a contaminated stream from the above site, exceeded
the safe limit of 0.5 ilg g.1 wet weight. The base-line heavy metal concentrations in sediment and
bivalves from selected sites of coastal Karnataka are presented
Sperm whale Physeter macrocephalus washed ashore at Devbagh, Karnataka
A female sperm whale Physeter macrocephalus
was stranded and washed ashore in dead condition,
at Devbagh, 10 km away from Karwar on 18.9.2009
Some aspects of nursery rearing of the Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer, Bloch) in indoor cement tanks
Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) is a highly valued food fish of great culture potential. Nursery rearing of Asian seabass in
indoor cement tanks was undertaken. Fish were fed on artificial diets at 4% body weight and four times feeding per day
with periodical size grading. Mean weight and length at the end of the 45 days experimental period was 8.55 g and
91.03 mm, respectively. While survival rate was 100%, FCR and PER at the end of the 45 days experimental period was
1.15 and 1.07%, respectively. The results of various growth parameters studied showed that the values obtained were in
conformity with earlier reports on nursery rearing of Asian seabass under varied rearing systems and growth conditions
Note on a bumper catch of Threadfin sea catfish in shore seine
For past several years catfish did not form a fishery at Karwar located in the Uttara Kannada District of Karnataka. However, during the routine observations on the fish landings at Aligadda Fish Landing Centre, Karwar, an unusual bumper catch of about 3 tons of cat fish Arius arius was recorded from shore seine (Yendi bale) in the early hours of 28th July 2018. locally known as "Billi Shade", the catch was so heavy that it was difficult to drag the net to the shore and the haul was partially harvested at sea itself. The net operated by around 40 fishers at a depth of less than 8 metres, was 400 m in length
